AVIAN INFLUENZA in Réunion Measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus
Article created on 06/10/2022Updated on 06/10/2022
On September 30, 2022, the State services were informed of a suspicion of avian influenza in four family poultry farms located in the heights of Saint-Paul in Reunion. Preventive measures were immediately put in place at these sites. Following confirmation of positivity to the H5N1 avian influenza virus (AIHP), measures aimed at eradicating the risk were deployed immediately, including the euthanasia of poultry and ducks held at the 4 sites concerned.
In this context, a regulated area composed of a 3 km protection zone and a 10 km surveillance zone have been determined by prefectural decree published today.
Within this regulated zone, prescriptions aimed at preventing the spread of the virus are provided for, including in particular:
• Reporting obligations for professionals and individuals who keep poultry;
• Veterinary visits to places where poultry are kept at the request of the DAAF of La Réunion to check the health status of the animals;
• The obligation to immediately report to the Reunion DAAF any appearance, on poultry, of clinical signs suggestive of avian influenza or any increase in mortality as well as any significant drop in production data;
• The implementation of biosecurity measures: information on biosecurity for professionals and individual holders is available on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty:
https://agriculture.gouv.fr /avian-influenza-biosecurity-measures-for-professional-operators-and-individuals ;
• Recommendations to avoid, as far as possible, gatherings of people raising, holding or in contact with poultry or other birds,
• Prohibition of gatherings of birds and in particular live poultry at fairs, markets, exhibitions and gallodromes (cockfighting places),
• The ban on releasing game birds.
The Prefect of Reunion calls on each and everyone, professional or holder on a family or personal basis, to be extremely vigilant and, within the regulated zone, to strictly respect the prescriptions in the face of this risk which may have economic and animal health consequences. very important.
Failure to comply with the prescriptions of the prefectural decree is criminally punishable and each case of violation reported to the State services, or noted by them, will be systematically prosecuted.
Any suspicion, including abnormal mortality, must be systematically reported to the DAAF of La Réunion (alimentation.daaf974@agriculture.gouv.fr).
