Photos: Waves Crash Over Barrier on Road

September 18, 2010 by bernews

The photos below were taken this morning [Sept 18], and show waves crashing over the barrier onto to the road in South Shore, Smiths as the massive Hurricane Igor churns in our direction. As of this morning the US National Hurricane Center says Igor is 475 miles away and is carrying maximum sustained winds of 110mph.

The road started to flood yesterday, and sea spray can be felt as you drive across. Government confirmed that portions of the road will be closed to motor traffic from the Brown Darrell Clinic to Watch Hill Road from 10:00am today. Barriers and signage will be erected but area residents will not be impacted by the barriers.

TCDAT1
HURRICANE IGOR DISCUSSION NUMBER 44
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL112010
1100 PM AST SAT SEP 18 2010

THE CLOUD PATTERN IS NOT AS IMPRESSIVE AS IT WAS 12 HOURS AGO AND IT
APPEARS THAT IGOR COULD BE A LITTLE BIT WEAKER TONIGHT. THE AREA OF
DEEP CONVECTION HAS DECREASED AND THERE IS NO EYE OBSERVED ON
CONVENTIONAL SATELLITE IMAGERY. A MICROWAVE PASS A FEW HOURS AGO
SHOWS A PARTIAL RING OF CONVECTION ASSOCIATED WITH WHAT IS LEFT OF
THE EYEWALL. DVORAK T-NUMBERS HAVE DECREASED...BUT STILL SUPPORT AN
INITIAL INTENSITY OF 85 KNOTS. I WAS TEMPTED TO LOWER THE INTENSITY
JUST A LITTLE BIT GIVEN THE CURRENT SATELLITE PRESENTATION...BUT I
WOULD RATHER WAIT FOR DATA FROM THE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT...WHICH
WILL BE IN THE AREA SOON. FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS...IGOR WILL BE
WITHIN AN ENVIRONMENT FAVORABLE TO MAINTAIN ITS CURRENT INTENSITY
AND IN FACT...THE INTENSITY CONSENSUS MODEL KEEPS IGOR WITH NO
CHANGE FOR THE NEXT 12 TO 24 HOURS. ALTHOUGH THE OFFICIAL FORECAST
SHOWS IGOR WITH 85 KNOTS AS IT PASSES NEAR OR OVER BERMUDA...THE
HURRICANE COULD EASILY EXPERIENCE SOME MINOR FLUCTUATIONS IN
INTENSITY. THEREAFTER...ONCE IGOR BECOMES EMBEDDED WITHIN THE
MID-LATITUDE WESTERLY FLOW WELL NORTHEAST OF BERMUDA...IT SHOULD
BEGIN TO BECOME POST-TROPICAL/EXTRATROPICAL.

THE STEERING FLOW HAS BEEN WELL ESTABLISHED AND WELL DEPICTED BY
GLOBAL MODELS SINCE IGOR FORMED MANY DAYS AGO...AND IT HAS BEEN
DESCRIBED IN DETAIL IN PREVIOUS DISCUSSIONS. IGOR IS NOW MOVING
TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST OR 330 DEGREES AT 11 KNOTS...AND A TURN
TO THE NORTH AROUND THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE
SHOULD BEGIN SOON. IN 36 HOUR...THE CYCLONE SHOULD BE MOVING
NORTHEASTWARD FULLY EMBEDDED WITHIN THE MID-LATITUDE FLOW AHEAD OF
A LARGE TROUGH. GIVEN THE WELL ESTABLISHED STEERING CURRENTS
FORECAST BY THE GLOBAL MODELS...TRACK GUIDANCE IS IN VERY GOOD
AGREEMENT FOR THE NEXT 12 TO 36 HOURS...INCREASING THE CONFIDENCE
IN THE FORECAST DURING THIS PERIOD. HOWEVER...THERE IS A LARGE
SPREAD IN MODELS BEYOND 48 HOURS AS IGOR BECOMES POST-TROPICAL/
EXTRATROPICAL AND MOVES RAPIDLY NORTHEASTWARD OVER THE NORTH
ATLANTIC.

IGOR CONTINUES TO HAVE A VERY LARGE WIND FIELD...AND CONDITIONS
SHOULD DETERIORATE ON BERMUDA SOON WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE
CENTER.

Bermuda Weather Service Forecast Discussion

<!-- END TITLE -->For Sunday, September 19, 2010 09:00 UTC

FORECASTER - Nick Camizzi

CURRENTHURRICANE IGOR REMAINS ABOUT 200 NAUTICAL MILES TO THE SOUTH OF BERMUDA. WE ARE CURRENTLY WITHIN THE TROPICAL STORM WIND RADIUS. HOWEVER, WINDS HAVE NOT QUITE REACHED TROPICAL STORM FORCE SUSTAINED HERE AT TXKF. THEY HAVE REACHED TROPICAL STORM FORCE AT THE ELEVATED STATIONS ON THE ISLAND, INCLUDING 40 KT SUSTAINED AT COMMISSIONER?S POINT WITH GUSTS OVER 50 KT THERE AND AT HARBOUR RADIO. THE HIGHEST GUST AT TXKF HAS BEEN 41 KT, WITH A 10-MINUTE MEAN WIND OF 28 KT. WINDS SHOULD CONTINUE TO INCREASE, ESPECIALLY AS WE GET INTO THE THE WIDESPREAD RAIN AND HEAVIER EMBEDDED SHOWERS THAT ARE LOCATED JUST SOUTH OF THE ISLAND. HURRICANE IGOR HAS WEAKENED SINCE YESTERDAY, AND NOW HAS SUSTAINED WINDS OF 75 KT WHICH MAKES IT A STRONG CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE. SINCE IGOR IS ABNORMALY LARGE, IT IS STILL EXPECTED TO BE A DANGEROUS HURRICANE .IT IS AN ABNORALLY LARGE HURRICANE, WITH VERY HIGH SEAS, A LONG DURATION OF STRONG WINDS, AND STORM SURGE. THE LATEST NHC FORECAST CAUSES THE CENTER OF IGOR TO PASS JUST WEST OF BERMUDA. THIS WILL CAUSE BERMUDA TO GET INTO THE WORST PART OF THE HURRICANE, THE NORTHEAST EYEWALL. WITH SUCH A LARGE EYE, A SIGNIFICANT PERIOD OF LIGHTER AND VARIABLE WINDS IS EXPECTED FOR A COUPLE HOURS AROUND MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. WINDS SHOULD VEER TO THE WEST-SOUTHWEST AS BERMUDA GETS INTO THE SOUTHWEST EYEWALL AS IGOR PASSES. WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO EASE BELOW HURRICANE FORCE AT THE VERY END OF THE NIGHT, AROUND 3 AM.

SHORT TERM AND LONG

TERMWINDS CONTINUE AT STORM FORCE FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, BEFORE EASING INTO THE TROPICAL STORM FORCE RANGE DURING THE LATE MORNING HOURSE. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EASE AROUND LUNCHTIME ON MONDAY. AFTER THAT, PLEASANT WEATHER IS EXPECTED THROUGH THE END OF THE FORECAST PERIOD SAVE THE ROUGH SEAS ON THURSDAY AS STRONG RIDGING BUILDS OVER THE WESTERN ATLANTIC WITH A HIGH PRESSURE CENTERED NEAR BERMUDA.

Igor forces evacuation of offshore oil rigs

By QMI Agency
Last Updated: September 19, 2010 4:12pm

As Hurricane Igor pounded Bermuda Sunday night, at least one Canadian oil company evacuated workers from some offshore facilities in Newfoundland waters.
...

Husky Energy said it would evacuate all 110 personnel from the oil rig Henry Goodrich on Monday as a precautionary measure.

Most of the 88 workers on the drill rig Grand Banks, also operated by Husky, began leaving Saturday and were expected to arrive in St. John's Sunday night, CBC News said. Only essential personnel remained aboard the company's production and storage vessel, Sea Rose.

3. Public weather impacts and warnings summary

While the centre of igor is expected to pass well southeast of the
Avalon Peninsula later on Tuesday, it is expected to spread heavy
rain across much of the province during the day. In addition, a
trough of low pressure unrelated to igor will cross Newfoundland on
Monday and Monday night and spread periods of rain to much of the
province. The nlwo has issued rainfall warnings for parts of
Southern Newfoundland associated with this trough. On Tuesday this
trough is expected to interact with the moisture from igor and
intensify the heavy rain over much of Newfoundland. Total potential
rainfall from these systems could generally run from 50 to 100
millimeters, with local amounts possibly exceeding 150 millimetres
On Tuesday. Specific details on the extent and amount of rainfall
For Newfoundland will be available with the 5:00 AM NDT forecast on
Monday.

In addition, wind gusts possibly exceeding 90 km/h could also affect
parts of the Avalon Peninsula and eastern nefoundland on Tuesday.

Long period swells of up to 2 to 3 metres spreading out ahead of
Igor will continue to affect the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia
And southern-facing coastlines of Newfoundland for the next several
days.

4. Marine weather impacts and warnings summary

Hurricane force winds are possible to the right of igor's track as
It moves across the Southeastern Grand Banks on Tuesday. Gale force
winds are expected to extend well outward into all quadrants
surrounding igor as it passes on Tuesday. Gale warnings have
Already been issued for southern slope waters as gales ahead of
igor's very large wind field could impact these regions by late
Monday afteroon or evening. Any additional marine wind warnings
Will likely be issued with the 3:00 AM marine forecast on Monday.

5. Technical discussion for meteorologists

A. Analysis

Latest satellite imagery still show igor as a large hurricane with
good outflow to the north and west. However, its eye is obscured by
central dense overcast and water vapour imagery indicates some dry
air wrapping into the system. An ssmi microwave pass from this
morning indicated partial erosion of igor's southern eyewall, and
The most recent radar imagery from Bermuda seems to show this as
well. Despite this, igor will remain over 28+c sst's and in a low
shear environment for the next 12 to 24 hours and thus is forecast
To maintain its intensity for the time being.

Observational data continue to show that igor has a very large wind
field, with gale force winds extending up to 300 NM outward from the
storm centre.

B. Prognostic

No significant change from previous track or intensity forecast
philosophy. Igor is currently moving northward but is expected to
turn toward the northeast in the next 24 to 36 hours as it begins to
round the edge of a strong mid-atmospheric ridge. Beyond that a
shortwave from the Great Lakes will round the base of a large upper
low over Qu?bec and begin to accelerate igor northeastward. Most
guidance agrees with this general scenario. Most deterministic
Models also depict a significant interaction between transitioning
post-tropical igor and the short wave over Newfoundland in
The 36 to 48 hour time frame.

Igor will remain over very warm sst's and favorable shear conditions
for at least another 12 to 24 hours. Then shear is forecast to
increase and gradual weakening of igor is expected beyond the 36
Hour time period.

Cyclone phase space diagrams show extra-tropical transition
Beginning later on Monday, although most of the models are
Suggesting that the transition process will be slow. The timing of
this transition, specifically how quickly igor's rainfall pattern
will become asymmetrical and shift to left of track, could
Come into play with the short wave interaction over Newfoundland
On Tuesday. This will be the main factor determining the rainfall
impacts on the province.

C. Public weather

See above. The main public forecast challenge will be the rain
impacts for Newfoundland on Tuesday. This will depend considerably
On the track and rate of post-tropical transition of igor and the
timing of the interaction with the pre-existing short wave trough
crossing that region Monday night and Tuesday.

D. Marine weather

See above. In addition, some long range models are indicating a
Major post-igor development to the east of Newfoundland which may
develop Major wave activity and significant storm surge for for
northeast coast and the east coast for Tuesday into Wednesday. The
tidal range will also be a bit larger than normal during this
Period..But will not be perigean spring tides.

TCDAT1
HURRICANE IGOR DISCUSSION NUMBER 48
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL AL112010
1100 PM AST SUN SEP 19 2010

THE LAST OBSERVATIONS FROM THE AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER
AIRCRAFT SHOWED THAT THE CENTRAL PRESSURE WAS SLOWLY RISING AND
MAXIMUM FLIGHT LEVEL WINDS HAD DECREASED TO 68 KT. THERE WERE A
FEW SFMR-OBSERVED SURFACE WINDS OF 65 TO 69 KT ABOUT 90 N MI TO THE
SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTER BUT MOST OF THESE WERE FLAGGED AS
QUESTIONABLE. THE CURRENT INTENSITY IS SET AT 65 KT...WHICH IS
REMARKABLY LOW FOR THE ESTIMATED CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 955 MB. NOT
MUCH ADDITIONAL WEAKENING IS ANTICIPATED OVER THE NEXT DAY OR SO.
BY 36 HOURS...THE GFS SHOWS WELL-DEFINED THERMAL ADVECTION WITHIN
THE CIRCULATION AND THEREFORE IGOR IS LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN
TRANSFORMED INTO A VIGOROUS EXTRATROPICAL CYCLONE AROUND THAT TIME.

THE LATEST CENTER FIXES INDICATE THAT THE TRACK IS BEGINNING TO
BEND TO THE RIGHT AND THE INITIAL MOTION IS ESTIMATED TO BE 015/12.
NOT MUCH CHANGE IS MADE TO THE OFFICIAL FORECAST TRACK FOR THE NEXT
24 TO 36 HOURS. IGOR IS EXPECTED TO TURN NORTHEASTWARD ON MONDAY
AND ACCELERATE AHEAD OF A DEEP-LAYER TROUGH MOVING EASTWARD FROM
THE NORTHEASTERN U.S. AND THE CANADIAN MARITIMES. IN THE LATTER HALF
OF THE FORECAST PERIOD...POST-TROPICAL IGOR IS LIKELY TO TURN BACK
TO THE NORTH AND NORTH-NORTHWEST AS IT INTERACTS WITH ANOTHER
EXTRATROPICAL CYCLONE AT HIGH LATITUDES.

SUSTAINED WINDS OF 64 KT WITH GUSTS TO 81 KT WERE REPORTED AT
BERMUDA DURING THE PAST HOUR. SINCE IGOR HAS A VERY LARGE
CIRCULATION...SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS ON THE ISLAND WILL PROBABLY
CONTINUE THROUGH THE NIGHT.
