Dengue outbreak declared in Tuguegarao

TUGUEGARAO CITY : The Tuguegarao city council has declared a dengue outbreak here following an upsurge in dengue fever cases in the past two months.

The council members unanimously declared the dengue outbreak on September 1 as they expressed alarm over the 323 reported cases of dengue with one confirmed death from January to August 31 this year.

Dr. James Guzman, Tuguegarao City health officer, suggested to the council the declaration of a dengue outbreak to allow local officials to pool their resources for anti-dengue measures and to strengthen its information campaign against the disease.

City councilors resolved to reactivate the anti-dengue brigades in villages and to ask Mayor Delfin Ting to oblige local government workers to observe the four-o-clock habit and search-and-destroy operations.

Dengue brigades would be responsible in ensuring cleanliness at villages to prevent dengue fever, a flu-like illness spread by Aedes aegypti-infected mosquitoes.

Latest reports said that Cagayan Valley Region has reported at least 787 dengue fever cases with eight dengue fever-confirmed deaths from January to August this year.

STA CRUZ, Laguna ? The Provincial Health Office (PHO) revealed yesterday that dengue cases in Laguna this year has breached the 1,600 mark, with 10 people succumbing to the mosquito-borne disease.

Dr. Alneo Lagos, PHO chief, said the two latest fatalities from dengue fever died this September and were residents of the cities of Calamba and San Pablo.

Lagos said records showed that two dengue victims also died in this town this year. There were another two fatalities in Cavinti and one each in Calamba City, Bi?an City, Pagsanjan and Siniloan.

The greatest number of dengue cases was reported in this town with 130 patients downed since last January; next is San Pablo City and Cavinti, each with 112 dengue cases so far this year.

Lagos said there was no declaration of an outbreak of dengue in Laguna despite the big number of dengue cases since the deadly disease was spread in different places and not concentrated in a particular area...

CEBU CITY ? The Regional Director of the Department of Health (DoH) in Central Visayas yesterday said dengue cases in the region has reached an alarming level and an outbreak of the disease could take place if measures are not immediately implemented.

DoH 7 Director Susana Madarieta said from January to September of this year, 5,571 dengue cases or 1,229 cases more compared to the same period of last year were recorded in the region.

?Although we have not yet declared any area around the region as having an outbreak of dengue, the situation is very alarming because of the 28 percent increase of dengue cases for this year,? said Madarieta during the weekly 888 News Forum at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel yesterday...

Despite a decline in the number of hospital admissions due to dengue in the past week, the rise in the number of deaths in Negros Oriental caused by dengue continues to be a cause for concern, Dr. Felix Sy of the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital said yesterday.

Sy said he noted that as of Sept. 2, already eight deaths due to dengue were reported, compared to five deaths in 2008 and four in 2009 for the same period.

The latest casualty was a six-year old girl from Pamplona town, who died on August 31 at the NOPH, Sy said.

Canlaon City, Guihulngan, Bais, Vallehermoso, Bacong, and Dumaguete had one dengue deaths each while Pamplona recorded two, since the start of the year, official records showed.

A total of 773 dengue cases were recorded in the province from January 1st this year until present, compared to 852 cases for the same period last year, said Sy...

Dengue cases reach 62,503 with 465 deaths nationwide

Negros Occidental (7 September) -- As of August this year, dengue cases all over the country reached 62,503 with 465 deaths.

In the same period in 2009, cases reached only around half of the number of cases this year which is 33,102 with 350 deaths.

Western Visayas tops the list with 11,896 cases among other regions in the country, while Negros Occidental has 3,158 cases and Bacolod City 1526 cases recorded.

The Provincial Health Office records revealed dengue cases affect mostly those aged 1-19 years old and are mostly males.

"Dengue is an all year round disease and peaks two months after the onset of the rainy season which is also the time when school children go back to school," Dr. Ernell Tumimbang told members of the Provincial Peace and Order Council in a meeting recently.

In Negros Occidental, the top five cities include Silay with 516 cases, two deaths; Talisay with 417 cases, three deaths; Himamaylan with 328 cases, five deaths; Cadiz with 319 cases, two deaths; and Kabankalan with 290 cases, one death.

With the rise in number of dengue cases and deaths, the Department of Health is advocating D.E.N.G.U.E verses dengue.

According to Health Secretary Enrique Ona, D is for daily monitoring of patient's status, E for encourage intake of oral fluids like oresol, water, juices, etc, N for note any dengue warning signs like persistent vomiting and bleeding, G for give paracetamol for fever and NOT ASPIRIN as this may induce bleeding, U for use of mosquito nets and E for early consultation for any warning signs.

Tumimbang also appealed to the public to clean their surroundings and destroy breeding grounds of mosquitoes.

The Provincial Health Office is also coming up with a comics type Information Education Materials that will appeal to children and will be easily understood in far flung areas in the province.(PIA/EAD)

DepEd: 58 students die in dengue

THE Department of Education (DepEd) urged its regional directors and superintendents nationwide to intensify their campaign against dengue following reports that 58 students have already died from the dreaded virus.

The alarming development prompted the DepEd to instruct all school officials to take necessary measures against the spread of the disease in schools.

According to a report by the department's Health and Nutrition Center, there are 4,738 confirmed dengue cases in schools nationwide.

Education Chief Armin Luistro said: "We should work together to contain the outbreak of dengue. Students' welfare should be our primary concern."

In Quezon City, where tremendous increases of cases were reported, a "Dengue Buster Seminar" was recently made to heighten awareness on the importance of cleanliness at home and in school.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO ? The Department of Health (DOH) in Central Luzon reported yesterday that dengue cases in the region is now 80 percent more than cases within the same period last year, with 23 deaths due to the mosquito-borne ailment also noted to be higher.

This, even DOH regional director Dr. Rio Magpantay also told Punto he is looking into reports of viral ailments causing dengue-like symptoms such as high fever and lowering not only of platelet counts but also of white blood corpuscles in the blood, but are later ascertained not to be dengue.

Magpantay said the dengue cases in Central Luzon has become ?a cause for alarm? but noted that they have not reached epidemic proportions.

He cited latest reports indicating that since last January, 2,704 dengue cases have been noted in Central Luzon, and that this number is 80 percent higher than last year?s over the same period. The number is expected to go higher as more reports were still expected from the field.

At the national level, though, the DOH reported a higher 98.9 percent increase of dengue cases so far this year, as compared to the same period last year.

Magpantay also said that 23 deaths due to dengue have already been reported in Central Luzon. ?As this time last year, there were only 16 deaths,? he said.

The Department of Health (DOH) will be working with the World Health Organization (WHO) in finding a cure for dengue as the number of cases in the country reached a record high this year.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona said on Thursday the DOH and WHO will undertake a collaborative research for a potential cure for dengue.

He said the search for a dengue cure began in the 1990s but there have not been any tangible results even after almost 20 years because dengue is an epidemic only in Southeast Asia.

"Kaya kulang ang pondo sa research dahil narito lang sa Southeast Asia ang dengue, hindi parang ibang sakit tulad ng A(H1N1) na buong mundo apektado (The reason why there's not enough funding for dengue cure research is because it is only epidemic in Southeast Asia. Other illnesses like A(H1N1) affected the whole world)," he said.

Ona said he plans to meet with the health leaders of other Southeast Asia countries to discuss the possibility of pooling resources in the search for a vaccine against dengue.

"Isang bagay na dapat bigyang diin is iyong research," he said. "Kailangang maglagay tayo ng pondo para magkaroon ng research kung paano makokontrol ang dengue in terms of mosquito intervention at paano madi-diagnose nang maaga."

(We have to put importance on research. We need to allocate funds on researching how to control dengue in terms of mosquito intervention and early diagnosis.)

While there is no dengue vaccine yet, Ona said prevention, by keeping one's surroundings clean, is the best defense against dengue.

"Ang regular na paglilinis ng ating kabahayan ang pinakamalaking bagay para masugpo ang dengue habang walang vaccine (Cleaning our homes and our surroundings is the best way to fight dengue while there is no available vaccine)," he said.

Number of dengue cases start to go down

The number of dengue cases in August this year reached 15,222, slightly lower than the 19,992 cases recorded in July 2010.

Even though the number of dengue cases went down in August, the overall count from January to August this year ? 69,594 cases, is almost double the figure reported in the same period in 2009.


However, the DOH expects the number of cases to go down after the June to August peak, even though dengue is no longer considered a rainy season disease.

The dengue record in this year went above the epidemic threshold after 501 deaths were reported in the last eight months.

Ona cautioned the public and local health authorities not to let their guard down against the disease even though the dengue count could start to go down.

"We are calling on all local government units to mobilize barangay dengue brigades in their areas," he said, adding that health centers should be ready to manage consultations for dengue and other rainy season diseases like flu, leptospirosis and bronchitis.

Ona also directed DOH officials to suspend temporarily their out of town seminars and trainings so that they can focus their attention to dengue.

Dengue cases in Caraga region up 159% ? report

BUTUAN CITY ? The number of dengue cases in the Caraga Region has increased by 159 percent, with 2,001 infections so far compared to the 648 in the same period last year, a report from the Health department?s regional office.

Department of Health (DOH)-Caraga regional information officer Nurse Sunshine Alipayo said the report only includes infections recorded in hospitals.

She feared several cases have remained unreported as some of those infected refuse to get treatment from hospitals due to financial constraints.

DOH record only reflects reports from different hospitals in the region, monitored by Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, she said.

Of the 2,001 dengue cases, eight people have been reported dead.

The report said deaths were recorded in Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte province (with one); Surigao City, two; Bayugan City, one; Magallanes in Agusan del Norte, one; San Francisco, Surigao del Norte, one; Del Carmen in Siargao Islands in Surigao del Norte, one; and Malimono in Surigao del Norte, one.

Dengue Deaths May Hit 800But no State of Calamity Yet, According to the DoH

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DoH) warned on Saturday that dengue deaths, now standing at 501 since last January, may reach 800 if vulnerable communities fail to respond to the situation properly.

Latest figures from the DoH’s National Epidemiology Center (NEC) showed that dengue cases reached 69,594 from January to August 28 this year. This figure is nearly double the 34,997 dengue cases recorded in the same period in 2009.

Dr. Eric Tayag, NEC director, warned that dengue deaths will potentially surge to 800 if affected communities fail to observe and sustain a high sense of environmental responsibility.

Malacañang said on Saturday that it is studying the possible declaration of a state of calamity over the alarming rise of dengue cases in the country.

But Tayag said the DoH is not yet inclined to make such a recommendation at this time.

Nevertheless, he raised the possibility that dengue fatalities may reach 800 if more severe dengue cases are not given immediate and proper treatment.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said over Radyo ng Bayan that the Palace will continue discussions with DoH officials on whether or not to declare a state of calamity.

“Definitely, we will take the advice of the Secretary of Health (Enrique Ona),” Lacierda said. “They’re (DoH officials) in the best position to do so (address the dengue situation).”

At this point, he said it is important to keep a high level of public awareness of the threats of dengue in order to avoid more cases.

Among the crucial areas being monitored by the DoH are Southern Luzon, Metro Manila, and Western Visayas.

The August 28 NEC report disclosed that the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR), and Eastern Visayas were among the regions with the highest increase in dengue cases.

Tayag said it is difficult to fight dengue if the communities themselves do not make collective effort to clean their environment.

“It is not only a few households that should do their part, but the whole neighborhood. It doesn’t work if only few households observe cleanliness in their respective areas. Your mosquitoes could affect the entire neighborhood,” he told Manila Bulletin in a phone interview.

“People should make cleaning their daily habit,” he said.

In a separate phone interview, Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy, program manager for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, appealed to communities to collectively act against dengue, saying that the DoH is exhausting all means to stop the increasing number of dengue cases.

“We encourage the community to do their share of responsibility for cleaning their own environment. What we need is community action,” he said. “We don’t want to anticipate an increase in dengue deaths.”

Tayag said the DoH reintroduced the “181 formula” — one liter of water, plus 8 teaspoons of sugar, plus 1 teaspoon of salt as an alternative to the oral rehydration solution (oresol) to combat dehydration, which is among the signs of dengue in its early stage. The patient has to drink the solution every one or two hours.

“If oresol is not available at health centers, people could prepare this solution at home. They don’t realize that they could have the treatment at home,” he said.

Health centers are giving out oresol for free, while drugstores and hospitals are selling it at reasonable prices.

Suy said the “181 formula” is “old” but is being promoted by the DoH to treat mild cases of dengue.

“Instead of going to the hospital, parents could prepare this solution at home. We reminded the public that we have this old formula, because they might have forgotten it,” Tayag said. He said the DoH has directed all health centers to campaign for the “181 formula” in their respective communities.

Among the dengue symptoms that are similar to colds, bronchitis, and the regular flu are mild to high-grade fever with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain and rashes.

The NEC report said Regions 2 and the National Capital Region(Metro Manila) have registered a 46.9 percent and 10.9 percent decrease in dengue cases, respectively, while cases in Metro Manila have increased by 16 percent.

It also disclosed that 78 percent of those who were afflicted with dengue were between one and 20 years old

Cebu records 11 dengue deaths in 7 days

CEBU CITY ? In one week, the Department of Health (DOH) in Central Visayas reported an increase of almost 600 dengue cases and 11 deaths recorded by different units.

But improvements were also reported, with Mandaue City being delisted as an ?area of concern? and villages in Toledo City downgraded from hot spots to ?clustering of cases.?

In its latest dengue report, the Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (Resu) recorded 6,146 cases and 43 deaths from Jan. 1 to Sept. 11. In contrast, the Sept. 4 bulletin recorded 5,571 cases, with 32 deaths in the region.

The case fatality rate remained low at 0.7 percent, compared to 1.4 percent or 43 deaths in the same period last year.

The report said there were an additional 121 cases in Cebu City, which still topped the list of cities or municipalities, with 23.2 percent of the total number of cases.

From January this year, the regional health office has logged a total of 1,403 cases and nine deaths in the city. Last year, Cebu City had 630 cases and 24 dengue-related deaths.

Tagbilaran City, which is one of only two areas outside Cebu with a recorded increase in cases, followed with seven percent of the total number. It has 419 cases and three deaths.

The other town is Sibulan in Negros Oriental, which has a total of 93 dengue cases and one death.

The rest of the towns or cities in the top 10 list are: Lapu-Lapu City, Toledo City, Talisay City, Dumaguete City, Danao City, Mandaue City and Naga City...

MANILA, Philippines?Dengue has stricken ill a record number of 12,000 students in public elementary schools since January, killing 117 of them, the Department of Education (DepEd) said Monday.

?It?s unprecedented. The reports are higher than in the past,? said Dr. Minda Meimban, the officer in charge of the DepEd?s Health and Nutrition Center.

She said there had been no confirmation yet on whether the mosquito-borne disease was contracted at home or on campus but most of the students had recovered and returned to school.

A few cases of affected teachers have been reported, Meimban said, but no exact figure has been released.

The Department of Health (DoH) earlier said that since the start of the year, some 69,000 dengue cases had been reported nationwide and that 501 had died from the disease...

Dengue kills 8-year-old boy

EB Magalona Mayor David Lacson yesterday confirmed that an 8-year-old resident of his town died from dengue Friday.

Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, OIC Provincial Health Officer, said this brings the number of dengue deaths in Negros Occidental to 27.

Clark Balolot, 8, a grade two pupil of Nanca Elementary School died Friday at the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City.

He is the first dengue casualty in EB Magalona that has had 99 dengue cases this year, the town?s Municipal Health Office records shows.

KIDAPAWAN CITY, North Cotabato, Philippines -- North Cotabato has monitored 3,809 dengue fever cases since January, more than double the 2009 figure of 1,608, health officials said Wednesday.

Iloilo dengue cases up 432% but patients decreasing

Iloilo Province has monitored 4,399 dengue cases from January to September 11 this year, 432.5 percent higher than the 826 cases recorded in the same period in 2009, figures of the Provincial Health Office-Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit show.

The deaths have climbed to 26, including four in Cabatuan and two each in Pototan, Sta. Barbara, Oton, Dingle, and San Miguel.

Dengue deaths were also recorded in the towns of Guimbal, Janiuay, Barotac Viejo, Guimbal, Mina, Estancia, Bingawan, and Banate, and Passi City.

However, the number of suspected dengue patients brought to 12 district hospitals daily have been decreasing from September 1 to 12...

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines ? Massive clean up and dissemination and information drive against dengue went into high gear as suspected dengue cases in Northeastern Mindanao (Caraga region) has reached a total of 2,001, health authorities reported Friday.

The Department of Health Center for Health Development (CHD), Caraga Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, said in its "Disease Surveillance Report" that this figure came out during the period of its 36th Morbidity Week, from September 5-11, this year.

In a press conference here, Dr. Gerna Manatad, DOH-13 CHD Regional Epidemiologist said this figure was also based on admission reports from the different disease reporting hospitals in the region from January 1-September 9, this year.

?This is 168% higher compared to the record of the same period last year which only had 746 cases,? said Dr. Manatad...

Dengue cases drop; deaths rise

ROXAS City ? Dengue cases in the province decreased from 178 cases on August 22?28 to 62 new cases on September 5?11, according to the Provincial Health Office.

Currently, there are only a total of 2,665 cases based on reports of the Capiz Epidemiology Surveillance and Response Unit (CESRU).

The number of fatalities, however, rose to 19. The latest was a 10-year-old girl from Brgy. Libas here.

According to the CESRU, the trend of new dengue cases per week (partial) is as follows:

* July 4 to July10 ? 171
* July 11 to July 17 ? 189
* July 18 to July 14 ? 234
* July 25 to July 31 ? 248
* August 1 to 7 ? 357
* August 8 to 14 ? 231.

Local government units and nongovernment organizations continue with the campaign against the disease.

According to Gov. Victor Tanco, unlimited assistance to poor dengue patients confined in government hospitals is still ongoing.

But the patients, he said, should be identified by the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

DOH to declare dengue outbreak in C. Visayas

A DENGUE outbreak will be declared in Central Visayas after health authorities recorded 7,241 cases from January to Sept. 18 this year.

The Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) said the figure represented an 18-percent increase since Sept. 18.

The Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU)?Central Visayas recorded 1,095 cases in one week alone.

Dr. Jocelyn Abellana, DOH Central Visayas regional dengue coordinator, said the figure also represented a 46.4-percent increase for the same period last year.

Dengue cases were pegged at 4,921 cases with 63 deaths last year.

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 23 - The Department of Health (DOH) in Bikol said Thursday that dengue cases shot up by 71 percent as compared to last year's incidence, prompting health authorities to be on heightened alert.

DOH data disclosed that at least 11 people have died and 1,889 people were hospitalized in various parts of Bikol mainly due to dengue, a mosquito-borne disease.

The surge in dengue cases in Bikol for the past nine months of this year may be attributed to these three factors: climate change, urbanization and poor health and sanitation practices of the community.

The DOH epidemiology surveillance team said the current 1,889 cases shot up by 71 percent from the 1,099 cases registered last year...
