BAGUIO CITY ? Health authorities in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) sounded the alarm against dengue fever, citing how the mosquito-borne disease has spread amid the dry spell caused by El Ni?o.

Dr. Myrna Cabotaje, Department of Health DoH-CAR director, said the prolonged dry season should not be a reason for residents to be complacent in guarding against dengue-carrying mosquitos.

Citing figures from the DoH-CAR, Cabotaje said that from 103 reported cases in the first eight weeks of last year, dengue fever cases in the region has increased by 10 percent for the same period this year with 114 reported cases. There are already two reported deaths from dengue this year...

Dengue cases in Bacolod City increased by at least 87 percent in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period last year, records from the City?s health office showed yesterday.

Acting City health officer Jovy Vergara said there were 159 dengue cases for the first quarter this year, while there were only 85 dengue cases last year.

Vergara, however, said that, compared to last year with 13 casualties, there were no reported deaths caused by dengue this year.

Of the 61 barangays in Bacolod, Estefania with 21 dengue cases topped the list, followed by Taculing and Brgy. 16 with 19 and 16 cases, respectively while, Barangays Granada, Bata, Mansilingan and Singcang-Airport had 10 dengue cases each.

Vergara also assured that the increase of dengue cases in Bacolod is not alarming as they are still on top of the situation, adding that the city health office?s mitigating measures are in place.

The City Health Office is sending an ?anti-dengue team? to the barangays with dengue cases, where they conduct investigation and locate the mosquitoes? breeding ground to destroy the larvae, Vergara said. He added that they also conduct fogging in the dengue-affected areas to kill adult mosquitoes.

Vergara said the aegis aegypti mosquitoes, carrier of the deadly disease, bite during sunset and sunrise only.

He also reminded the public to exercise proper container management and make sure to dispose of stagnant water in their houses so mosquitoes will have no breeding ground.*APN

Dengue cases increase; 5 deaths in Region 2

Tuguegarao City (28 April) -- Amidst El Nino phenomenon, dengue cases in Cagayan Valley Region went up with 5 fatalities in the first quarter of this year.

Dr. Marian Lynn De Laza, Department of Health Region 2, said from January to April 10, 2010, 277 cases were reported which is 19 percent higher as compared to last year with 5 deaths from different provinces of region 2.

However, De Laza cleared that the reported cases is below alert and endemic threshold level that is why no clustering and no outbreak were declared.

She informed that based on their monitoring the death cases were recorded from the municipalities of Claveria and Lasam, Cagayan; Ilagan, Isabela; Diadi, Nueva Vizacaya; and Maddela, Quirino.

She said 52% of the recorded cases were from the province of Cagayan, followed by Nueva Vizacaya-26% and Tuguegarao City- 22%.

"Most of the cases were listed from Cagayan. In terms of municipalities, Baggao recorded the highest number of cases", De Laza informed.

De Laza said they are conducting information dissemination and surveillance operations in the municipalities were most cases were recorded to educate the public on how to control the disease.

She further explained that even during severe drought there is no guarantee that there will be no dengue cases in the region.

She said there are findings in America that even during drought there are tiny mosquitoes that are carriers of dengue virus which can equally spread the viruses as that of mosquitoes during wet season. (PIA 2)

IPHO verifies ?dengue outbreak? in Tubungan town

TUBUNGAN, Iloilo ? A team from the Epidemiologic Surveillance Unit (ESU) of Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) visited Brgy. Cadapdap of this town yesterday to check the status of 15 suspected dengue cases initially reported from the said barangay.

According to IPHO assistant chief Ma. Socorro Qui?on, once her team confirms that those cases are positive, it means the area has dengue outbreak.

?An area with highest number of reported dengue cases is not a good indication,? she stressed.

Dengue is transmitted by Aedes egypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These are day-biting mosquitoes that breed in clear, stagnant waters.

A total of four deaths were already recorded in Iloilo province from January up to the present.

Casualties came from towns of Guimbal, Oton, Pototan and one component city of Passi.

Once again, the IPHO reminds the public not to ignore simple fever.

Qui?on said that fever should be checked by physician so that early medication and treatment should be given.

Last year from January to June 10, a total of 286 dengue cases were already recorded by the IPHO.

So far, Qui?on said that they are expecting the number of dengue cases will increase during rainy season.

June is considered the month of rainy season; thus, the IPHO advised the public to clean their surroundings and to properly dispose tin cans, empty bottles, used tires and other containers that are potential breeding areas of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

In Western Visayas region, the Department of Health 6 (DOH-6) has so far recorded a total of 1,311 cases ? with seven deaths ? from January to May 8 this year.

Negros Occidental has the highest number of recorded cases at 380 with two deaths, followed by Bacolod City with 266 cases. Iloilo Province has 231 cases with four deaths, while Iloilo City has 126 cases.

There were 194 cases in Capiz, 79 in Aklan, with one death, 16 in Guimaras and 12 in Antique.

Dengue cases up 34% in Bacolod City

Bacolod City (27 May) -- The number of dengue cases in Bacolod City has increased by about 34 percent from January to May 15 this year, although no deaths have been recorded by the Bacolod City Health Office.

CHO Statistician Warlito Valiente said that while there were no reported deaths in Bacolod this year, there were 13 deaths due to dengue from January to December last year.

The dengue cases from January 1 to May 15 has reached 266 this year based on records of the City Health Office, compared to 199 last year covering the same period.

Dr. Salome Bi?as, city health officer, said that they will conduct information drive against dengue during the opening of classes and will monitor incidence of dengue in the different schools and in the whole city. (PIA/cad)

Dengue cases in Negros Occidental have increased by 145 percent from January 1 to May 8 this year with 400 cases compared to 163 in 2009, Dr. Luisa Efren, Provincial Health Officer, said in a report released yesterday.

One dengue patient from Himamaylan City died this year compared to two in the same period in 2009, she added.

Efren said she has asked all municipal and city health officers in Negros Occidental to ensure that schools are cleaned and all breeding places of mosquitoes that are carriers of dengue be removed to protect students returning to school in June.

PHO cluster groups have also been created to investigate areas where there are a lot of dengue cases reported so that preventive measures can be taken, she said.

Areas with higher incidence of dengue and are being monitored are Silay, Cadiz, Sagay, Escalante, Bago, Victorias, La Carlota and Talisay cities and Manapla and EB Magalona towns.

The PHO is continuing its information campaign to search and destroy breeding places of mosquitoes and for the public to seek early treatment of dengue to prevent deaths, she said.

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan ? Health authorities here warned local residents and tourists on the sudden surge in the number of dengue fever cases in the province after the local department here recorded a 111-percent rise in dengue fever cases over the first five months of this year as compared with the same period last year.

From 90 cases for the first five months last year, the dengue fever cases this year increased to 191 which forced concerned authorities to issue the necessary advisories to the public to take the necessary preventive measures in order to abate the expected increase in the dreaded disease.

With the onset of the rainy season, provincial and health officials believe there will be a continuous rise in dengue fever cases because of the increase in stagnant water which is the favorite breeding ground of the dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

In order to abate a possible outbreak or epidemic of the dreaded disease in the coming months, the local health department reminded residents to observe cleanliness in their surroundings by removing the breeding ground of dengue-carrying mosquitoes, particularly their storage containers of water so that the mosquitoes will not breed on the said places.

At the same time, people suffering from flu-like symptoms must immediately seek medical attention in the nearest medical facility in their place so that they will be properly given medical attention to ascertain what kind of illness they are experiencing.

Negros dengue cases up 148% in 1st 5 months of 2010

Barely had the rainy season started in the Philippines when health authorities reported a 148-percent rise in dengue cases in Negros Occidental in Western Visayas in the first five months of 2010.

Provincial Health Officer Luisa Efren said at least one dengue-related death from Jan. 1 to May 29 has been recorded, according to a report on Visayan Daily Star Friday.

Efren said there were 463 cases from Jan. 1 to May 29, compared to only 187 in the same period last year.

She did not identify the "lone" dengue fatality but described the patient as being from Himamaylan City, and that the patient died from dengue shock at the Lorenzo D. Zayco District Hospital in Kabankalan City.

Efren noted there were three deaths in the province during the same period last year.

ILOILO CITY (PNA) ? The Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DoH-CHD) 6 warned the public against cases of dengue, leptospirosis, and other diseases that usually rise during the rainy season.

The warning was issued in the region after six dengue deaths were already reported from Jan. 1 to May 29 this year.

The dengue deaths were from Aklan and Capiz with one each, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental, two each.
Reported dengue cases were at 1,653.

DoH-CHD 6 Regional Director Ariel Valencia said it is important for the public to start cleaning their surroundings while there is still no heavy rain.

KIDAPAWAN CITY ? Amid aggressive drive against dengue, the city?s sanitary inspector on Wednesday confirmed the rise of cases during the first five months of this year.

City health sanitary inspector Gloria Mondejar said they have recorded 192 dengue cases so far compared to 87 in the same period last year.

"This is alarming that is why the city health office is intensifying its campaign against dengue in all 40 villages of the city," Mondejar said.

According to her, a resident here with dengue fever had died due to complications from other diseases.

With a total of 337 reported dengue virus infections in 2009, the city health office recorded only one death, said Mondejar, adding that most badly hit villages are Lanao, Poblacion, Sudapin, Magsaysay and Singao.

Mondejar, however, was surprised upon learning that not one single dengue case was reported in Barangay Patadon, a Muslim-dominated village in Kidapawan City...

Dengue cases rise 90% in Cordillera

The Cordillera office of the Center for Health Development (CHD) was forced to declare a heightened alert on the dreaded dengue fever following a 90 percent increase in the cases in the different parts of the region for the first semester of the year.

Based on reports gathered from 58 hospitals and health centers in the region, dengue fever cases rose to 550 cases from January 1 to the present compared to the 289 cases registered during the same period last year.
This year, Ifugao recorded the highest number of dengue fever cases with 187 followed by Mountain province with 97 with reported clustering of cases in Callutit, Bontoc town.

On the other hand, Benguet registered 72 cases with the capital town of La Trinidad having a significant increase in individuals affected by dengue fever over the past several weeks.

Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) has chosen this mountain resort city as one of its key pilot areas for its zero dengue program but dengue fever cases are still on the rise, especially in populated barangays.

Kalinga reported only 27 cases while the conflict-stricken province of Abra had 26 cases during the said period based on the CHD-CAR report.

Because of the exposure of children in contracting the illness, the health department is now assisting the Department of Education on massive information and education campaign to combat the continues increase in the proliferation of dengue-carrying mosquitoes not only in school but also in their respective houses.

Among the practical preventive measures include the covering of water storage containers to prevent dengue-carrying mosquitoes from breeding, installation of screens on doors and windows, use of mosquito nets and insecticides if warranted.

Dr. Myrna Cabotaje, CHD-CAR regional director, explained suspected dengue fever cases must not self-medicate by taking in aspirin tablet to bring down fever but must be immediately brought to the nearest health facility for immediate medical attention.

The outset of the rainy season is considered to be the time for the rapid increase in dengue fever cases because of the existence of many breeding grounds of the mosquitoes in residential and public places.

According to her, people suffering from flu-like symptoms must immediately seek medical attention in the nearest health facility so that they will be properly diagnosed considering the expected rise in other rainy day diseases with the same symptoms which could complicate once an infected individual will not be given the appropriate diagnosis.

Aside from dengue fever, other rainy day illnesses that are expected to increase in the coming days include the dreaded A (H1N1), cough, colds, diarrhea, ordinary flu, leptospirosis among others.

Cabotaje advised people to keep their resistance strong by eating the right kind of food and keeping their surroundings clean so that they will be spared from the onslaught of the rainy day diseases which could result to the untimely death of individuals.

The DoH Caraga posted an advisory on Friday to local government units (LGU?s) and other concerned government agencies to intensify mitigating measures and information drive against the dreaded disease.

According to DoH Caraga Epediomology and Survielance Unit, the 44% increase i dengue cases compared to those during the previous year needs a ?unified action? from all concerned government agencies, particularly the barangay officials.

The DoH Caraga has recorded 160 dengue cases in Butuan City, 173 cases in Agusan del Sur, 175 in Surigao del Sur, 84 in Agusan del Norte, 38 in Surigao City, 18 in Bislig City and 30 cases in Surigao del Norte during this year?s first semester.

However, DoH-Caraga reports did not mention dengue deaths as validation is still going on from various hospitals in the region's six cities and four provinces.

As of press time, DoH Region Xlll Regional Director Dr. Leonita P. Gorgolon have instructed all the integrated provincial, city, and community health officers and all health providers in the region to strengthen information campaign to help protect their constituents and institute the right and effective ways to combat dengue.

Her specific order is ?to carry out all efforts to address dengue problem in their respective areas of jurisdictions?.

She appealed to all local officials and concerned government agencies, as well as those belonging to the private sector, to join the Health Department in conducting information drive to promote sound practices against the spread of dengue, especially now that the rainy season is about to begin.

Meanwhile, Butuan City Mayor Dr. Ferdinand Amante, Jr. on Friday immediately mobilized city and community health officers to ?go on the ground? and lead the mitigating measures against the spread of the dreaded disease

THE Cebu City Health Department is advising residents to keep their surroundings clean and implement measures to prevent the dengue mosquitoes from breeding.

Durinda Macasucol, assistant city epidemiologist, issued the appeal after announcing a 112-percent rise in dengue cases in the city from January to May this year when compared to the dengue cases over the same period last year.

Data from the City Health Department showed that six people died of dengue over the same period.

Macasucol said the rise in dengue cases may be due to the water stored by residents to cope with the drought brought on by the El Ni?o phenomenom.

Macasucol said she expected the increase in dengue cases to continue with the start of the rainy season.

Aedes aegypti, dengue-causing mosquitoes, breed on clear and stagnant water.

Macasucol said the health department was intensifying anti-dengue campaigns such as mist spraying, fogging operations, and declogging of canals where mosquitoes were expected to breed.

Macasucol advised parents to clean their surroundings and to remove all possible breeding grounds of mosquitoes.

The health department also intensified its information drive in areas that have high incidence of dengue cases.

Barangays Guadalupe and Labangon have most number of dengue cases with 33 cases and 24 cases respetively. (See table).

Dengue deaths, cases in east Visayas double -- DOH

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines ? Alarmed over the rising cases of dengue fever in Eastern Visayas, the Department of Health (DOH) has called on the local government units and the community to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease.

The DOH-8 records showed that the region registered 3,367 dengue fever cases with 31 deaths since January until this week.

The figures were already way above the 1,279 dengue fever cases with 14 fatalities recorded in 2009.

Dr. Nicolas Bautista, chief of the DOH-8 regional surveillance service unit, on Tuesday said the number of deaths caused by dengue fever and persons afflicted with the disease would increase if the LGUs and the residents did nothing to help in their drive against the disease.

?These are preventable deaths. Our call is for our people and local government units to help us in our campaign which is to clean our surroundings,? Bautista said.

He explained that the best way to combat the disease would be through environmental sanitation and the destruction or cleaning of mosquito breeding areas.

The DOH records also showed that of the six provinces in Eastern Visayas, Leyte had the highest number of dengue fever cases (1,949) and deaths (15), followed by Samar (669 cases and 10 deaths), Eastern Samar (373 cases with two deaths), Northern Samar (133 cases with one death), Biliran (196 cases with one death) and Southern Leyte (47 cases with two deaths).

As part of their awareness campaign, the department?s anti-dengue mascot, dubbed as ?Aedes,? named after the mosquito species that causes the disease, has visited various provinces and cities in the region, Bautista said.

He urged local government units through their respective local health officials to monitor villages where there were individuals suffering from dengue fever.

Bautista also said that they have established fast lanes intended for dengue fever patients in both private and government-run hospitals.

Following the rise of dengue cases here that claimed 10 lives, Mayor Joseph Penas will seek the approval of a resolution placing the city under a state of a calamity before a special session of the city council to be held this Friday.

In an interview, Penas said the number of dengue cases in the city has risen to 352.

?Hospitals here are already filled with patients affected with dengue. We have reached an alarming level and we have to act now to prevent further deaths," he said.

Once approved, the city will allocate up to P1 million of their calamity fund for prevention, to provide assistance to those afflicted, information dissemination and educating communities about dengue, he said.

Penas said barangays with high number of dengue cases, including Tres de Mayo, Aplaya, and Zones 1, 2, and 3, will get priority in the allocation of funds and other assistance.

?We appealed to the Davao del Sur Medical Society to help us in this endeavor,? he said.

The City Health Office said that 21 of 26 barangays here have cases of dengue. From January to June, this year, 59 dengue cases were recorded in Tres de Mayo; 21 in Zones 1; 14 in Zone 2; 47 in Zone 3; 39 in Aplaya; 10 in San Jose; 9 in San Miguel and Cogon, and 3 in Soong.

Based on the records from the Provincial Health Office, Digos City has the most number of dengue cases with 352 as of early this month, followed by Bansalan with 95. The province now has a total of 600 dengue cases and 14 deaths; 10 in Digos; three in Bansalan and one in Malalag.

Riza Dacalos, provincial malaria coordinator, said the Dengue Task Force created last Monday will prioritize the city.

?Since the city has the most number of dengue cases, we will gather data here first," she said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health Region 10 office has identified Bukidnon province as a ?dengue hot spot? after noting a 1,000 percent increase in dengue cases in a month.

Dr. David Mendoza, head of the regional surveillance unit, said 517 dengue cases were recorded in the big hospitals, compared with 47 cases recorded in the same month last year.

?We are now conducting clustering (of data) of these towns in the province based on other factors,? he said.

In a related development, health officials declared an outbreak of malaria cases in Barangay Gumitan, Davao City but assured residents that the situation is under control and medicines have been distributed to affected communities.

Antonietta Ebol, regional malaria coordinator of the Center for Health Development (CHD) in Davao, said blood smear tests were conducted last June 22 among Gumitan residents following the death of a 28-year-old male teacher found positive for the disease.

The smear tests were sent to the CHD and 98 individuals were confirmed positive for malaria. Out of the total number, 48 were children.

According to Ebol, Barangay Gumitan is the farthest village in Marilog district of Davao City near the border of Bukidnon province.

?We have already declared it an outbreak because last year, there was no reported case of malaria in the area... In Davao City, there are two out of 16 districts where malaria is endemic.

Seven die of dengue in North Cotabato

KIDAPAWAN CITY ? Despite a massive information campaign against dengue fever, seven people have died of the disease in four towns in North Cotabato, officials said.

Health authorities on Wednesday confirmed that dengue claimed the lives of seven people in four towns: Banisilan (four victims); Arakan, Pigcawayan and Libungan (one fatality each).

Dr. Hansel Amoguis, chief of the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU) said 1,889 persons have been confined this year in public and private hospitals in North Cotabato after being diagnosed with dengue.

Amoguis says this is very alarming because the figure already surpasses the total number of dengue cases (1,614) in the province in 2009.

DOH counts 20,000 dengue cases in 6 months

MANILA, Philippines - Despite warnings to the public from the Department of Health (DOH) to keep their surroundings clean to prevent the incidence of dengue, the number of dengue cases went up to 20,161 nationwide from January 1 to June 5 this year.

Of this number, 135 cases led to death during the first 6 months of 2010.

The rise in dengue cases represents a 45.3% increase in the incidence of dengue. Only 13,872 cases were recorded in the same period last year.

Based on the DOH's monitoring, the National Capital Region (Metro Manila) has the most number of dengue cases (11.7% of the total).

Central Visayas is second, followed by Calabarzon, Soccsksargen, Eastern Visayas, and Davao.

The ages of those who had dengue ranged from less than 1 month to 95 years old. A huge majority (77% of the cases) were 1 to 20 years old.

Most of the dengue cases involved males (62.3%).

With the rainy season ongoing, dengue cases are expected to increase, according to Dr. Erick Tayag of the DOH.

Hospitals packed with dengue victims

THE DENGUE MENACE HAS grown, killing dozens of mostly children nationwide and raising the alarm bells in many provinces where public health officials are now trying to cope with a constantly increasing number of victims.

In Southern Mindanao, health officials are scrambling for ways to prevent more fatalities following the deaths of 20 people, mostly children, in Davao City alone since January.

Salvador Estrera, Department of Health assistant regional director, said more than half of 2,100 cases in the region are in Davao.

?We are now considering (declaring) an outbreak,? said Estrera in a phone interview.

What makes the situation alarming, he said, was the continuing increase in the number of cases.

Public support vs dengue urged

Roxas City (12 July) -- Health officials in Capiz are urging Capice?os to be vigilant and participate in the drive against dengue.

Capiz Provincial Health Medical Specialist Dr. Evelyn Bolido of disclosed that community participation is a must to prevent the spread of the deadly aedes egypti mosquito that results in dengue disease.

Bolido said that there is already a significant rise in the number of dengue cases this year compared last year.

According to her, as of July 3 this year, Capiz has already recorded a total of 666 dengue cases of which 638 are Capice?os and 28 others came from other provinces outside here.

Bolido also revealed that 7 persons had already died of dengue disease here.

She added that of the 666 dengue cases, 333 are 1 to 10 years old, 236 are 11 to 20 years old, 11 cases are children below 1 year old, and 6 cases for persons above 50 years old.

Bolido revealed that from January to December 2009, Capiz had only recorded a total of 306 dengue cases with 9 mortality.

On the other hand, she stressed that cleanliness and sanitation remains the most important step in putting an end to the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes. (PIA) [top]

Dengue fever hits Iligan with 681 cases - CHO

Iligan City (14 July) -- The City Health Office (CHO) of Iligan has reported nine (9) fatalities out of the 681 individuals with dengue fever cases from January to June 2010, as compared to year 2009 with 586 cases registered, succumbed 17 lives lost due to complications.

In an interview with Carlito Ballesta, health education and information officer, City Health Office (CHO) of Iligan, he said that for the first six months of this year, mortality was sporadic, afflicting seven (7) barangays, this city.

He said that for the first semester this year showed that those victims, ages ranging from three months old to 75 years old, suffered dengue--an infectious disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus day-light mosquitoes characterized by sudden onset of fever, headache, pains in the joints, skin rash and hemorrhagic dengue fever.

Cost of the cases reported were found to be infants and children at the grade school level, Ballesta said.

The city may have an increase in the number of dengue victims this year but not all came from Iligan, some were from the neighboring provinces bringing their patients for admission in our hospitals here, explained Ballesta.

With our advocacy on providing the people on what to do in case this dreadful disease strikes, we find it effective, having known that immediate family of the dengue victim rush their patient to the hospital for treatment, and this implies that they are aware of the disease, Ballesta added.

For a child having signs of fever, we advised the parents not to let the child take 'aspirin' due to its clotting mechanism, said the health educator. Dengue patient has to undergo laboratory tests, likely to check on the blood platelet of the child.

As we continue with our massive information drive on the 4-S introduced by the Department of Health (DOH) earlier, we utilized the city's 14 sanitary inspectors to go on field to conduct series of Pulong-Pulong at the barangay level and coordination meetings with the school heads--public and private institutions, our way of bridging school visits to conduct inspection within its premise where there could be possibly breeding ground of the dengue-carrying mosquitoes, expressed Ballesta.

Thus, the best way to fight dengue is cleanliness. The adaptation of the 4-S strategy goes with Search and Destroy, Self-Protection, Seek Early Consultation and Say No to Indiscriminate Fogging.

The sanitary inspectors found some unattended water receptacles of the refrigerator from the victim's household that possibly served as the breeding ground of the dengue-carrying mosquito, revealed Ballesta, the team leader.

The city mayor has issued an executive order for a clean-up drive throughout the city, and it has to be sustained by having a regular clean-up drive within the barangay level, involving the populace to get rid of the breeding places as well as to prevent the spread of this dreaded disease, disclosed Ballesta.
