Lockdown slowed spread of fatal hog disease–BAI
By Jasper Y. Arcalas
June 22, 2020

The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) said the imposition of the months-long lockdown has also helped prevent the spread of African swine fever (ASF) in the country, as cases declined to 20 per million pigs.

In a recent virtual press briefing, BAI Director Ronnie D. Domingo said the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) implemented by the government to contain the spread of Covid-19 had prevented more ASF outbreaks.

“ASF spreads because of the movement of sick pigs. But because of ECQ our cases declined. Before ECQ we are recording 60 cases per million pigs but after ECQ we are down to just 20 cases per million pigs,” Domingo said.

Domingo said the country has so far experienced two waves of ASF outbreaks: the first was from September to October, following the confirmation of the dreaded disease and the second happened in January to February.

The second wave was caused by the Christmas break, when Filipinos could have brought back to their provinces ASF-infected meat products.

The dreaded ASF has spread to eight regions in the country, affecting hog farms in 224 cities in 25 provinces. According to Domingo, Central Luzon was the hardest hit among the affected regions.

Central Luzon is the top hog-producing region in the country followed by Calabarzon. The two regions account for a combined volume of 813,293 metric tons (MT), which is 35 percent of the country’s nearly 2.3 million MT (MMT) output last year...

Swine fever’s return in Laguna farms jacks up pork prices
By: Maricar Cinco - Reporter
Philippine Daily Inquirer / 05:34 AM July 10, 2020

The viral swine disease that has ravaged hundreds of thousands of hogs, pulling down local pork supply and raising pork prices, has infected backyard farms anew, including that of the University of the Philippines Los Ba?os (UPLB) that is meant for experimental or research purposes. In Laguna province, which has remained free of the African swine fever (ASF) until March, fresh outbreaks were reported on backyard farms in Calamba City and the towns of Los Ba?os, Victoria and Pakil, provincial veterinarian Grace Bustamante said on Thursday.

Department of Agriculture (DA) regional director Arnel de Mesa has called on traders to regularly disinfect trucks and facilities, while stricter measures are imposed against “smuggled” pork products from China, where the virus is believed to have originated...

African swine fever detected in 4 barangays in Magpet, Cotabato —DA exec
Published July 13, 2020 9:44am
By WILLIAMOR MAGBANUA

KIDAPAWAN CITY - At least four remote villages in the town of Magpet, Cotabato have been found to be positive for African swine fever (ASF), an official of the Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Monday.

DA-12 Regional Director Arlan M. Mangelen said the villages of Ilian, Kiantog, Tagbac and Magca-alam were found to be contaminated with ASF based on the blood samples collected from hogs in these areas.

Mangelen said blood samples were sent to the Regional Animal Diagnostic Laboratory in General Santos City.

The agriculture official said processed meat from the nearby Davao region could be the source of the ASF that affected the hog industry in Magpet...

123 hogs culled due to ASF in NoCot town
July 14, 2020, 2:29 pm

MANILA – Around 123 pigs owned by 48 farmers were humanely culled and properly disposed in Magpet, North Cotabato as the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Tuesday confirmed the detection of African swine fever (ASF) in the area.

According to the DA, the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) of North Cotabato received reports of swine mortalities in backyard farms in Barangay Ilian last June 29.

A disease investigation and surveillance and monitoring were conducted on July 1, by the PVO. Samples collected were submitted to the DA Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory 12 (RADDL) for testing of ASF. The samples tested positive for ASF viral DNA.

Another disease investigation was conducted on July 8-9, in adjacent barangays. Upon further investigation, it was recorded that there were about 68 swine mortalities of unknown cause. Samples tested from Barangays Magkaalam and Ilian were positive for ASF...
