Peru - outbreak of pneumonic plague

Re: Peru - outbreak of pneumonic plague

A suspected case of bubonic plague in Apollo
Laboratory. The sample of 14 year old is analyzed

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Technicians Departmental Health Service of La Paz (Headquarters) found the weekend a suspected case of bubonic plague in a community in the town of Apollo, said the Chief Epidemiologist of the entity, Ren? Barrientos.

"The suspect of carrying the disease is a 14 year Curiza community in the town of Apollo. Do not yet know the outcome of the laboratory, because it is growing, but on Wednesday we will know if bubonic plague, "he said.

The authority explained that the three technicians Venues, pest?gena sent to the area the previous week, made a raking across the area to assess whether increased density of fleas and in the mean is that they found the teenager who had initial symptoms of the disease.

According to Barrientos, the patient presented with fever, headache, chills, and weakening, so he was immediately isolated and subjected to treatment with antibiotics.

The previous August 11, the Government, through the Headquarters, initiated preventive work against a possible outbreak of bubonic plague in Apollo, after Peru declared a health alert by the appearance of evil, for it sent three technicians in the area. Two days later, the specialists reported that the density of fleas increased across the region.

This means that the insects were detected even in the homes, a situation that had not was because its reservoir of insects are the wild rodents in the case of Apollo, rattus rattus mouse or other mammal of Mt.

Bubonic plague is transmitted by the bite of a flea Xenopsylla cheopis type or rat flea. The flea transmits the bacterium Yersinia pestis. The symptoms are high fever and sudden headache, general malaise, and swollen glands. The complication of the disease is called pneumonic plague be accompanied by secretions and "nemoutisis" (vomiting of blood), causing death by respiratory failure.

The authority health department recommended that the population of the area called pest?gena, ie the town of Apollo, not to kill their own to fleas or rodents, because the only thing that will accomplish will be to expand the disease to other areas.

"People can not kill fleas or their reservoirs are wild rodents, because any activity that made them, without expert advice can be dangerous because the disease could be transferred to other regions and epidemic control would more problematic, "he said.

He explained that to accomplish this task, this Thursday will enter two teams of experts in the field of Sedes. They will do the spraying, but to the disinfection of the environment. "We must make every house residual spraying for the substance to stay for three or six months impregnated, then asked to cut the grass one hundred meters around the house and within it you will be asked to keep food."

Three people died in Peru

Three people died in the last two months in Peru by the outbreak of bubonic plague and pneumonic plague that affects mainly north of the country, reported in the digital page of the BBC. According to Peru's Health Minister Oscar Ugarte, from the first case in June, there are more than 30 people infected by the disease, but said they are under control.

Of the three deaths, the first two died of bubonic plague, transmitted by rodent flea bites, while the third died of pneumonic plague, the most deadly version that is transmitted between humans.

According to the explanation of the Chief Epidemiologist of the Departmental Service of Health of La Paz, Rene Barrientos, pneumonic plague is of a type, followed by the septicemic, that after the cut is introduced into the blood. The one that kills within 72 hours is the pneumonic, which is when bacteria enter the lungs and is spread through the air, without the bite of the flea.

The Minister of Health of Peru blamed the outbreak for the burning of agricultural land and crops including sugar cane, which he said have led to the arrival of rodent pests on people.

The BBC reported that pest extermination teams of Peru were deployed to areas of high risk and took steps to prevent an epidemic. The last outbreak of bubonic plague in northern Peru was in 1994, killing 35 people and infected more than a thousand.
