An outbreak of pneumonic plague, virulent disease with high mortality rate, was detected in Trujillo. Three patients, including a resident doctor and a medical student, whose health condition is serious, so the doctors are striving to save their lives.

This evil is a complication of bubonic plague, that is, that when a patient is not treated properly or promptly, it creates a generalized infection in humans and the bacterium Yersinia pestis (causing bubonic plague) spreads through blood and infects the lungs, causing pneumonic plague.

To tell the regional manager of Health, Victor Peralta Chavez, is the first time that this disease is recorded in the country and no longer a health problem local, regional or national level, it has an international connotation.

The disturbing story
A woman aged 29, from Mariposa Leyva sector, district Chocope (Ascope), distant 40 minutes north of this city, contracted the disease.

The first symptoms were manifested in the female the 3d instant. Five days later, his family took him to Trujillo, he was interned at the Regional Teaching Hospital.

It is notable that they were originally suspected as H1N1 cases.

From the article it looks like the situation is:

Initial woman (29) - onset July 3, hospitalized on the 8th, still hospitalized.
Doctor (32/35) - onset 10th, hospitalized immediately, now in critical condition
Other HCW/ medical student (21) - onset unknown, hospitalized 13th, still hospitalized

While the articles do not mention it, everyone who had contact with the three cases should be on preventative antibiotics.

Three cases of patients with pneumonic plague were reported yesterday in Trujillo, as reported by regional health manager, Victor Peralta Chavez. Mayors remain indifferent to the plague

While red alert remains latent in the province of Ascope by the outbreak of pneumonic plague, the mayors of the sector do little or nothing to join efforts and monitor progress of this infectious disease.

So yesterday warned the head of the Office of Advocacy of Trujillo, William Leo Huertas, irresponsibly stating that mayors do not attend meetings convened by the Regional Health Management to create the plan of containment and response to this dangerous disease.

"Only representatives of the mayors are, incapable of decision," after overtaking his office yesterday raised letters to the mayors of Ascope, Chicama, Chocope, R?zuri, Paij?n, Casagrande and Magdalena de Cao requesting their presence at the emergency meeting scheduled for Tuesday the 20th instant, when the expected time to develop a containment plan.

[_Yersinia pestis_ is endemic in parts of Peru, as can be seen on a
CDC map at <http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/plague/world98.htm>.

Most cases are due to bubonic plague following the bite of an
infected rodent flea causing a swollen and very tender lymph gland.
The swollen gland is called a "bubo." Bubonic plague should be
suspected when a person develops a swollen gland, fever, chills,
headache, and extreme exhaustion, and has a history of possible
exposure to infected rodents, rabbits, or fleas. A person usually
becomes ill with bubonic plague 2 to 6 days after being bitten.

When bubonic plague is left untreated, plague bacteria invade the
bloodstream. As the plague bacteria multiply in the bloodstream, they
spread rapidly throughout the body and cause a severe and often fatal
condition. Infection of the lungs with the plague bacterium causes
the pneumonic form of plague, a severe respiratory illness. The
infected person may experience high fever, chills, cough, and
breathing difficulty and may expel bloody sputum. If plague patients
are not given specific antibiotic therapy, the disease can progress
rapidly to death. At this stage, as appears to have happened in this
posting, person-to-person spread can occur, causing other cases of

So we now have in post #16 a fourth case, an 8-year-old child, hospitalized on the 17th, and now in stable condition. This case does not appear to be a contact of the first three cases, but came from the same area as the first case. As the first case was hospitalized one the 8th, this case is likely too late anyway to have caught it from her.

This could be a large outbreak. We still don't know the status of the family members of case #1.

I think this article is a little sloppy with the counts - it is adding the five bubonic cases from the past year to the four [confirmed?] pneumonic cases in the acute outbreak to get a total of nine plague cases.
