Monkeypox: infections by this virus in Peru increase to 340
According to the Ministry of Health (Minsa), the cases are spread over nine regions.
August 4, 2022

Until this Wednesday, August 3, there are 340 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Peru and they are distributed in the provinces of Lima, Callao, Ica, La Libertad, Tacna, Loreto, Piura, Cusco and Junín.

According to the publication on the official networks of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), all patients have been receiving timely assistance and 120 medical discharges were registered. They also specified that the identification of contacts is being carried out.

As you remember, this is a rare disease caused by a virus that is transmitted from animals to people and is similar to smallpox, but is considered less serious and is transmitted by direct contact with blood, body fluids, injuries from the skin or mucous membranes of infected wild animals, such as rodents and primates from Africa.

But that's not all, monkeypox can also be spread by direct contact with infected secretions from the respiratory tract of an infected person, and droplets produced by coughing, talking or sneezing.

In addition, they are more prone to contagion by touching the skin lesions or the materials used in cleaning or handling the lesion and by grasping objects recently contaminated with the patient's fluids, such as sheets, dishes, among others.

As recalled, to date there are two deaths due to the infection in Spain, one in Brazil and one in Peru, which were announced in recent days, coinciding with the declaration of a health emergency due to the outbreak declared in the states of California, Illinois and New York, in the United States.

In this context, new scientific evidence ensures that the way in which the disease presents in current cases differs from the traditional presentation of the infection that was known.

New findings confirm "the unprecedented ongoing community transmission of monkeypox virus among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men observed in the UK and many other non-endemic countries," according to a recent publication in TheBMJ.

In the case of Peru, infections are recorded as follows: in Metropolitan Lima there are 291 cases; in Lima Provinces, 5; Callao, 21; Ica, 3: Freedom, 14; Tacna, 1; Loretto, 1; Piura, 1; Cusco, 2 and Junin, 1.

Minsa specialists invited the population to call line 113, option 6, in case they present rashes or skin lesions; or they can also go to the nearest health facility.

The Ombudsman's Office of Peru asked the Government on Tuesday to "prioritize the evaluation of the incorporation" of the monkeypox vaccine in the face of the "high number of cases" reported for this disease, which already total 313 nationwide.

“We ask the Ministry of Health to prioritize the evaluation of the incorporation of the monkeypox vaccine, taking into account recommendations issued by the WHO (World Health Organization) in relation to this multinational outbreak and the high number of cases,” the autonomous body wrote in their social networks.

The Ombudsman added that, according to the national plan for preparation and response to this disease, Peru is currently in a phase of "community transmission", so "it is urgent to strengthen health services to prevent and reduce the impact of smallpox." simian”.

On a possible acquisition of the vaccine against this virus, the Minister of Health, Jorge López, ruled last week, who indicated that, after the WHO declared an international emergency due to the current outbreak, his sector was evaluating it.

“Of all the indications that the WHO has given, we already have 99% in our country (...) the only thing we lack is the vaccine, nothing else, which is currently being evaluated by the expert committee (to ) see if we are going to have the need to buy this vaccine for our risk group,” he commented.

Monkeypox continues to increase in its number of cases. The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported this Friday that those affected by the disease in Peru rose to 676, with 23 new patients reported in the last 24 hours.

At this time, the infected correspond to Metropolitan Lima (568), Lima Provinces (5), Callao (45), Ica (3), La Libertad (32), Áncash (2), Arequipa (5), Ucayali (1), Tacna (1), Loreto (3), Piura (2), Cusco (3), Cajamarca (2), Junín (2), Huánuco (1) and Lambayeque (1).

The Ministry of Health clarified that all patients receive assistance and that 260 people have overcome monkeypox.

"The Ministry of Health reports that 260 people have been discharged for Monkeypox and 23 new cases have been detected and all are receiving medical assistance. Their contacts are being followed up. There are already 676 infected since entering Peru ", reads the entity's publication on Twitter.

The institution recommends that anyone who has a rash or skin lesion should call Line 113 option 6 or go to the nearest health facility.
Minsa will buy vaccines against the disease

The Ministry of Health reported that Peru will buy vaccines against the monkeypox virus together with other member states of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

"Peru has expressed its decision that the acquisition and distribution be carried out in an equitable manner among the countries and has welcomed that it be carried out through the Revolving Fund as the most appropriate mechanism to ensure equal and supportive access to smallpox vaccines. simica", indicates the Minsa in a statement.

The entity added that this purchase will take into account technical, regulatory, programmatic, legal and ethical aspects, as well as availability in the event of a vaccine shortage.
Name new variant as "II"

A group of global experts convened by the World Health Organization (WHO) has agreed on new names for variants of the monkeypox virus, as part of ongoing efforts to align the names of the disease, the virus and its changes.

The scientists agreed to name the variants using Roman numerals. Thus they have reached consensus to now refer to the old Congo Basin (Central African) variant as one (I) and the old West African variant as two (II). In addition, it was agreed that Clade (variant) II consists of two subclades.

Thus, the new monkeypox naming convention comprises Clade I, Clade IIa, and Clade IIb, with the latter primarily referring to the group of variants circulating largely in the current (2022) global outbreak.
