Surveillance of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) Week 1, 2013

1. Universal Surveillance: Trend and intensity of the activity of influenza-like illness (ILI).
As recorded in Schedule Weekly notifiable nationally, ILI consultations accumulated in the SE 1 (-2012 December 30 to January 05, 2013) amounted to 3968, showing an increase of 51.8% over to EW 52, from 2614 consultations in the week before the 3968 consultations in week 1, with a rate of 59.5 per 100,000 population, ranking warning strip endemic corridor.

2. - Sentinel Surveillance: Monitoring of ILI consultations and hospitalized SARI:
In sentinel surveillance was a rise from the previous week (163/4.535) in regard to the proportion of ILI consultations, representing 8.6% (200/2.316) of all searches.

During the SE 1, the proportion of hospitalized for severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) in sentinel sites showed a decrease from the previous week (40/1.406), being 0.8% (12/1.518).
The highest number of cumulative cases of SARI (12) are in groups of 5 to 19 years and older than 60 years.
In the SE 1 there were no deaths or ICU revenue in SARI sentinel.

In the SE 1 11 respiratory specimens were processed from SARI sentinel hospitals being identified viruses Influenza A H3 and Parainfluenza.

Surveillance of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) Week 2, 2013
1. Universal Surveillance: Trend and intensity of the activity of influenza-like illness (ILI).
As recorded in Schedule Weekly notifiable nationally, ILI consultations accumulated in the SE 2 (06 to 12 January, 2013) amounted to 9335 showing an increase of 35.3% over the SE 1, going from 3968 consultations in the week before the 5367 consultations in week 2, with a rate of 80.4 per 100,000 population in the Gaza insinuating corridor endemic epidemic.



2. - Sentinel Surveillance: Monitoring of ILI consultations and hospitalized SARI:
In sentinel surveillance in regard to the proportion of ILI consultations, there was an increase from the previous week (244/4.634), representing the SE 2 6% (311/5.498) of total queries.

During the SE 2, the proportion of hospitalized for severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) in sentinel sites showed a slight increase from the previous week (25/1.518), being 2.7% (45/1.660).
The highest number of cumulative cases of SARI (76) are in groups of 5 to 19 and children under 2 years.

In EW 2 the proportion of SARI ICU revenue was 7% (3/43) and 2.9% of deaths (2/69). None of the deaths showed association with respiratory viruses under surveillance.
3. - Viral circulation
In the SE 2 14 respiratory specimens were processed from SARI sentinel hospitals being identified viruses, primarily influenza A H3, and also the Influenza B and Parainfluenza.

1. Universal Surveillance: Trend and intensity of the activity of influenza-like illness (ILI).
As recorded in Schedule Weekly notifiable nationally, ILI consultations accumulated in EW 3 (13 to 19 January, 2013) amounted to 15,046 which represents an increase of 6.4% compared to the SE 2, passing of 5,367 consultations in the week before the 5711 consultations in Week 3, with a rate of 85.6 per 100,000 population in the Gaza insinuating corridor endemic epidemic.


2. - Sentinel Surveillance: Monitoring of ILI consultations and hospitalized SARI:
In sentinel surveillance in regard to the proportion of ILI consultations, there was a slight decline from the previous week (311/5.498), representing the SE 3 4.6% (264/5.715) of all searches.

During the SE 3, the proportion of hospitalized for severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) in sentinel sites showed a slight decline from the previous week (49/2.238), being 1.4% (31/2.256).
The highest number of cumulative cases of SARI (37) are in the group of children under 2 years.

1. Universal Surveillance: Trend and intensity of the activity of influenza-like illness (ILI).
As recorded in Schedule Weekly notifiable nationally, ILI consultations accumulated in EW 5 (January 27 to February 2, 2013) amounted to 25,149 which represents an increase of 1.4% compared to the SE 4 of 5,019 queries from the previous week to 5,084 consultations in week 5, with a rate of 76.2 per 100,000 population, presenting a greater number of cases than in the previous two years for the same period.


2. - Sentinel Surveillance: Monitoring of ILI consultations and hospitalized SARI:
In sentinel surveillance in regard to the proportion of ILI consultations, there was a similar situation to the previous week (305/5.329), representing the SE 5 5.5% (301/5.440) of total query.

During the SE 5, the proportion of hospitalized for severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) in sentinel sites showed a slight decline from the previous week (58/2.320), being 1.9% (36/1.888).
The highest number of cumulative cases of SARI (255) are in the group of children under 2 years.

In the SE 5 the proportion of SARI ICU revenue was 10% (14/58) and the proportion of deaths for SARI 5.5% (4/73), being a case associated with Adenovirus.

As recorded on Staff Weekly Notifiable, nationally, ILI consultations accumulated in EW 16 (14 to 20 April, 2013) amounted to 86,387 showing an increase of 1.3% compared to EW 15, going from 8,402 consultations in the previous week to 8,514 consultations in week 16, with a rate of 127.6 per 100,000 population, presenting a magnitude higher than that found in previous years for the same period and stood at the fringe of an epidemic in the corridor endemic.
