Death toll from dengue epidemic rises to 35 in Paraguay
The death toll from dengue epidemic that now affects Paraguay increased to 35 so far this year, although the authorities have announced a "progressive decline" of the reported cases.
Asunci?n, EFE April 26, 2011.
"They reported 93 deaths associated with dengue, of which 35 were confirmed dead. 42 cases are still under investigation and have been ruled [out?] as death by 16 dengue cases," he said at a news conference Ivan Allende, director of the Health Surveillance Ministry.
Two weeks ago the Ministry of Health has reported 30 fatalities.
The epidemiologist said that a total of 11,261 affected by the disease of acute febrile 30,881 reported and most patients were in Asunci?n and cities surrounding the capital.
He added that so far 2,095 people were hospitalized, of which 136 required intensive care, which represents 5 percent of the total.
Allende said that there is a viral movement throughout the country and simultaneously of types 1 and 2, with a predominance of the latter.
Dengue, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, causes fever, headache, muscle and joint and its most severe form, accompanied by vomiting, loss of fluid or bleeding, can be fatal.
Fatal cases this year and doubled to 2007, when an outbreak caused 17 deaths of 27,000 infections, while in 2010 the number of deaths was 15 of about 10,000 infected, officials said.
