Another Naegleria case emerges in Sindh

KARACHI: A middle-aged man was found afflicted with the deadly Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the brain-eating amoeba, at a private hospital in the city on Wednesday, taking the tally of naegleria cases to four in Sindh this year, sources and local health authorities said.

Sources in a large private hospital said the man in his early forties and hailing from Thatta was admitted to the hospital a day earlier in a precarious condition.

Officials in the provincial health department said they had received a report from the management of the hospital confirming that the tests of the patient showed that he was afflicted with the deadly disease.

Officials ?unaware? of two naegleria-related deaths in Clifton

KARACHI: Three people have died due to a deadly brain-eating amoeba, also known as naegleria, but health officials are not aware of the two recent deaths in Clifton.

A 37-year-old male patient died at a private hospital located in Clifton on Thursday. The victim was a resident of the Defence Housing Authority. Hospital officials confirmed that it was the second death caused by naegleria in the facility in a week. A 40-year-old woman died of the disease 10 days ago as well. The female patient was a resident of Clifton.

?[We are] not even sure about any deaths yet,? said Karachi executive district officer Dr Zafar Ejaz. ?The hospital management has not informed us yet. [This is] criminal negligence and we will take stern action against the management as they have to inform us immediately,? he added.

Dr Ejaz criticised the role of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) in this situation. ?It is the primary responsibility of the KWSB to ensure the required chlorination in the water supplied to the residents [of Karachi],? he said. The KWSB officials claim they are not responsible for any deaths as they supply chlorinated water across the city. ?We do proper chlorination. The problem is not at our end,? said Azam Khan, the focal person of the naegleria committee formed last year.

Toll rises to five as ?brain-eating? amoeba kills teenage boy

KARACHI: The health authorities on Wednesday confirmed the death of a teenage boy caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as ?brain-eating? amoeba, at a private hospital.

With the latest addition, this year?s death toll from the deadly infection has reached five in Sindh so far.

Officials said the 16-year-old boy, residing in Manzoor Colony, who died last week in a private hospital had been earlier taken as a victim of meningitis. He later tested positive for Naegleria fowleri and the hospital authorities conveyed the result to the provincial health department, they added.

Pakistani media report the fifth death due to the brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri in the past month. In 2014, some 14 people died due to contracting the lethal parasite in the country.

Naegleria fowleri (commonly referred to as the “brain-eating amoeba”), is a microscopic amoeba which is a single-celled living organism. It can cause a rare and devastating infection of the brain called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). The amoeba is commonly found in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, ponds and canals.

Sindh Health Department has constituted a six member committee to tackle Naegleria.
KARACHI (Dunya News) - Naegleria virus has claimed another life, raising the death toll to six in Sindh province, Dunya News reported on Saturday.

Muallam, 22, resident of district Orangi was diagnosed with brain-eating amoeba Naegleria and was under treatment in civil hospital in Karachi where he lost his life to the deadly disease.

To battle the growing threat of Naegleria Fowleri deaths, the Sindh Health Department has constituted a six member committee to focus on preventive measures against the disease.

Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the ?brain-eating? amoeba, claimed the life of a 56-year-old man, bringing the death toll in Karachi from the disease in the last few weeks to eight.

Talib Ali, a resident of Federal B Area, died of naegleria fowleri in a private hospital on Wednesday. The victim was admitted in the hospital a day earlier.

The total number of deaths due to the ?brain-eating amoeba?, Naegleria fowleri leapt to 11 after Karachi health authorities reported three additional cases during a 24-hour period.

In 2014, 14 Naegleria fowleri related deaths were reported in the province. Sindh Health Department officials say the lethal parasitic disease was first seen in Karachi nine years ago.

Naegleria poses threat as committee finds no chlorine in water samples

KARACHI: Sindh health department?s Naegleria fowleri monitoring committee has found no chlorine in water samples taken from the city during the last two months.

In a report issued on Saturday, the committee said it has not found the required amount of chlorine in 90 percent of the cases when it collected water samples from all across the Sindh capital.

Naegleria Fowleri Taking Toll

No attention has been paid to the threat of naegleria fowleri which is continuing its toll on the life. Yet another death from brain eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri, that of a young girl from Orangi, was reported in the city on Tuesday. According to the doctors the disease was caused by unchlorinated water. They directly blamed the water board for failing to treat the water supplied to the citizens. Chlorination is a simple process which can eliminate the feared amoeba from the water which has to date caused 11 deaths in the province of which eight were reported from the city.

After every death doctors and public leaders have called upon the KWSB to ensure chlorination and other treatment of water. But the board seems unmoved in the matter and hence more deaths.

It is really strange that the water board, which is also working under the Sindh government, should so immune to the complaints of the people and even of officials of the Sindh government too. One official of the Sindh health department has reported that most of the samples of water collected from different areas of the city have been found having no trace of chlorine. This has been going on for a quite some time.
