Pakistan has reported 39 polio cases this year, with two fresh cases of the crippling disease being detected in the Sindh province, authorities said on Sunday.

The latest cases were confirmed on Saturday in the Sanghar and Mirpurkhas districts of the province, the Dawn newspaper reported.

​These come after four cases were reported a day earlier, jolting the country's efforts to eradicate the poliovirus.

According to the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication in Islamabad, the newest victims are a girl and a boy.

These are the first polio cases from Mirpurkhas and Sanghar this year, the report quoted an official as saying. The prevalence of the virus had already been confirmed in the two neighbouring districts following multiple environmental samples testing positive for WPV1 since April, the official added.

In ten months of the year, Pakistan has reported 39 cases of poliovirus, of which 20 were reported from Balochistan, 12 from Sindh, five from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.​..

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported another polio case as a child from Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been confirmed to be affected with the virus, ARY News reported citing National Institutes of Health (NIH) sources.

A two-and-a-half-year-old child belonged to Dara Adamkhel has been affected with Type-I of the poliovirus, the NIH sources said.

This is Kohat’s second instance of polio this year; earlier this month, another district child was found to have contracted the virus.

Four sewage samples taken from Kohat have been found to contain poliovirus.​..

ISLAMABAD: In continuation of the alarming spread of poliovirus, the country's total tally for the ongoing year has risen to 41 after wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) was detected in a 42-month-old girl from Loralai District, Balochistan, The News reported on Saturday.

Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) has said that the child experienced the onset of paralysis on October 8 and laboratory tests, on Friday, confirmed that she had contracted WPV1.

The development comes as the government, in its bid to tackle the virus's spread, is set to kick off a nationwide anti-polio vaccine campaign on October 28...

ISLAMABAD - The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed the detection of the 42nd Wild Poliovirus Type-1 (WPV1) case in Pakistan.

The lab confirmed detection of Type-1 Wild Poliovirus in a child from Nowshera District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

This is the first polio case from Nowshera and the 42nd case from Pakistan at large this year. So far, 21 cases have been reported from Balochistan, 12 from Sindh, seven from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.​..

The new victim was reported from Chagai district of Balochistan, according to the Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme.

The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed the detection of the 43rd Wild Poliovirus Type-1 (WPV1) case in Pakistan, the statement said.

N​ine people were killed, including five children, in a bombing on Friday that targeted a southwest Pakistan polio drive, according to officials.

The bomb, which was attached to a motorcycle, exploded near a motorized rickshaw that was carrying schoolchildren in Mastung, a district in Balochistan province, according to local police chief Fateh Mohammad. The rickshaw also carried police officers assigned to protect polio workers.

Mohammad said five children were killed along with a police officer and two passersby. There were also 17 people injured in the attack.

Wasim Baig, a health department spokesman, said that some of those injured were moved to a hospital in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province. He said seven people died at the scene and two men who were critically injured died at a hospital.​..

​Pakistan reported new case of polio in Sindh, bringing the total number of the disease-infected children to 47 this year, the Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme said on Friday.

“The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed the detection of 47th Wild Poliovirus Type-1 (WPV1) case in Pakistan,” said the statement.

On November 8, 2024, the lab confirmed the detection of WPV1 in a male child from Ghotki, it said, adding that it was the first polio case from the district.

So far, 23 cases have been reported from Balochistan, 13 from Sindh, 09 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 01 each from Punjab and Islamabad. Genetic sequencing of the samples collected from the child is underway, the statement added.​..

Pakistan has confirmed its 49th case of wild poliovirus (WPV1) for 2024, with the latest case reported from Jaffarabad district in Balochistan.

The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health in Islamabad confirmed the detection on Thursday, November 14.

Genetic sequencing of the virus samples collected indicates a connection to the WPV1 strain detected in Pishin earlier this year.

This is the first reported polio case from Jaffarabad, which shares borders with Nasirabad, Jhal Magsi, Jacobabad, and Kambar districts, all of which have recently reported WPV1 presence in sewage samples or human cases.

Balochistan remains the most affected province in 2024, with 24 reported cases. Sindh has reported 13 cases, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 10, and Punjab and Islamabad one case each.​..

ISLAMABAD - The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has reported another polio case in Pakistan, bringing the total number of cases in 2024 to 50.

It reported in media that National Reference Lab identified the latest case involving a 20-month-old girl from Tank district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Tests confirmed the presence of Wild Poliovirus Type-1 (WPV1). This is the second polio case reported from Tank this year, with a genetic link established to a case from July in the same district.

Province-wise, Balochistan remains the hardest hit, with 24 polio cases reported this year, followed by Sindh with 13, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 11, and Punjab and Islamabad each recording one case.​..

ISLAMABAD - The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed the detection of two more wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases in Pakistan. With report of two more cases the number of total cases in the country this year reached to 52.

The lab confirmed the cases from Dera Ismail Khan where a boy and a girl child are affected. Genetic sequencing of the samples collected from the children is underway. D I Khan, one of the seven polio endemic districts of southern KP, has now reported five polio cases this year. Of the 52 cases in the country this year, 24 are from Balochistan, 13 from Sindh, 13 from KP and one each from Punjab and Islamabad. Multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine and completion of the routine vaccination schedule for all children under the age of five is essential to keep them protected.​..

Pakistan’s National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed the detection of three new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 55 in 2024.

The confirmation, issued by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication on November 23, identified the cases in DI Khan and Zhob districts, where female children were affected, and in Jaffarabad district, where a male child contracted the virus.

With this latest development, DI Khan, one of the seven polio-endemic districts in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), has now reported six cases of polio this year. Zhob has reported three cases, while Jaffarabad has seen two.

This marks a significant resurgence of WPV1 in the country. Out of the 55 reported cases, 26 are from Balochistan, 14 from KP, 13 from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.​..

Islamabad —

Authorities in Pakistan reported Monday that gunmen targeted vaccination teams in northwestern districts during a nationwide campaign against the paralytic poliovirus, resulting in the deaths of at least one health worker and two police officers.

The violence in the militancy-hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan, also injured several polio workers and police force members escorting them. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks.

Pakistan has reported a significant surge in poliovirus infections in 2024, confirming 63 cases so far, compared to only six cases in 2023.​
