ISLAMABAD: A 29-month-old child has been paralyzed by poliovirus in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province, health authorities said on Friday, bringing the total number of cases detected in the South Asian nation this year to 16.

The regional reference lab at the National Institute of Health (NIH) confirmed the virus in the child belonging to Sindh’s Hyderabad district, according to the country’s polio eradication program.

Out of the 16 cases reported this year, 12 are from Balochistan, three from Sindh and one from the eastern Punjab province, with 62 districts affected in total.​..

...According to the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio at the National Institute of Health, the 17th case of 2024 was reported from the federal capital when a child from Union Council Rural 4 of Islamabad was paralysed by type 1 (WPV1) of the viral disease.

The environmental samples from the capital city and neighboring Rawalpindi district have been positive for WPV1 since June, underscoring the persistent threat of polio to children’s well-being.​..

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- A roadside bomb hit a vehicle carrying officers assigned to protect health workers conducting a polio immunization drive in a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, wounding six officers and three civilians, officials said.

No polio workers were hurt in the attack in South Waziristan, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local police official Tahrir Sarfraz said.

He said no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which apparently targeted police.

Anti-polio campaigns in Pakistan are regularly marred by violence. Militants target vaccination teams and police assigned to protect them, falsely claiming that the campaigns are a Western conspiracy to sterilize children.​..

More than 100 police personnel who provide security for polio vaccination teams in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district went on strike on Thursday after a string of deadly militant attacks this week.

Police officers who are routinely deployed to protect polio workers going door-to-door frequently come under attack by militants waging a war against security forces.

Hundreds of police and polio workers have been killed over the past decade.

“Any constable who learns of the protest is leaving their polio duty to join the demonstration,” said a police officer at the sit-in who asked not to be named.

He told AFP that negotiations have failed between the protesting police and senior officials in Bannu.​..

A female polio vaccination team from Punjab's health department was assaulted and robbed of their polio vaccines and cash by a group from the Cantonment Board Chaklala, according to reports. The police have lodged a complaint against the alleged offenders based on the victim's statement, Dawn reported.

Khadija Bibi, who filed the FIR with Civil Lines police, stated that her team had been administering polio drops when the incident occurred. After completing their work, they returned to the Chaklala Cantonment Medical Center in Dehri Hassanabad. Bibi claimed that around 40 board employees forcibly entered a health team storage room, seizing items including polio vaccines, Rs15,000 in cash, and personal medicines, as reported by Dawn.

Bibi further alleged that upon entering the room to fetch medicine, she was physically assaulted by being slapped and pushed. The male staff accompanying her were also abused. Bibi has urged the police to take legal action against those responsible and to recover the stolen items, Dawn reported.​..

One more Polio case surfaced on Wednesday, the 18 such in the country this year so far, highlighting the ever-present risk of the spread of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) amid a nationwide polio vaccination campaign that was conducted earlier this month.

The latest case was reported from Quetta. The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, confirmed the detection of WPV1 in a two-year-old child in Union Council Qadriabad of the Balochistan capital.

This was the second polio case in Quetta this year, and the 13th in Balochistan province, the highest number of cases in the entire country.​..

KARACHI – A female polio worker was allegedly rapped and looted in Jacobabad city of Sindh, it emerged on Saturday.

The incident took place in Allah Buksh Jakharni village where a man held the polio worker hostage at gun point and allegedly looted her before sexually assaulting her.

Jacobabad Deputy Commissioner Zahoor Marri and SSP Sumair Noor Channa told media that the price suspect had been arrested along with the weapon used in the incident.

They said the DNA sample of the victim has been sent to Jamshoro for further investigation...

KARACHI: The total number of poliovirus cases recorded in Pakistan this year climbed to 24 on Saturday after a two-and-a-half-year-old child from Sindh's Hyderabad was diagnosed with the virus.

According to sources at the National Emergency Operations Centre, the child, hailing from Hyderabad's Neronkot area, was left paralysed by the virus, marking the city's second polio case,.

The latest case in Hyderabad takes the province's total number of children affected by the current poliovirus outbreak to five.

The latest polio case comes a day after authorities had confirmed that a 10-month-old baby girl in district Kohat of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was diagnosed with the virus, marking the northwestern province's second case this year.

Pakistan has reported another polio case in 2024, bringing the total to 33 this year after a child from Quetta was diagnosed with the virus.

The affected child showed symptoms of polio on August 22. Quetta has seen three polio cases, with 37 sewerage samples testing positive for the virus.

Additionally, the Quetta block has recorded 11 polio cases and 65 positive sewerage samples.

Balochistan remains the most affected province, with 17 cases reported. Sindh has recorded 10 cases, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa four, and one case each from Islamabad and Punjab.

On September 5, the National Institute of Health (NIH) presented detailed statistics on polio cases in Pakistan before the National Assembly.

The NIH reported a total of 45 polio cases across Pakistan over the past four years. In 2021, only one case was reported, while the number surged to 20 in 2022.

Health authorities told a local news channel that a 30-month-old girl from Lakki Marwat, an 18-month-old girl from Pishin, a 9-month-old boy from Chaman, and a 5-year-old boy from Noshki have all been diagnosed with the disease.

According to officials, the number of polio cases in Balochistan now stands at 20, while Sindh has reported 10 cases. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has seen five cases, and Punjab and Islamabad have each confirmed one case.
