MULTAN- Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic fever, commonly referred to as Congo fever has claimed two lives in Multan district of Punjab.

The victims include 40-year-old Zara Sanaullah, from Waziristan and 50-year-old Abdul Qayyum, from Dera Ghazi Khan.

Both patients carrying Congo virus were kept in an isolated ward of Nishtar hospital and their blood samples were sent to Islamabad?s health laboratory for tests which identified the Congo virus attack as the cause of death...

?My brother Sadiq Ali, who had been diagnosed with Congo virus expired at Liaquat National Hospital on Thursday night. Doctors said he was having problems with breathing and could not survive the complications of the disease,? Ibrahim, an elder brother of the deceased.

Ibrahim said his brother, who was married with four small children, used to visit a cattle pen in the area with other people, and doctors said he might have contracted the deadly disease from the same cattle pen. Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral disease, which is caused when a person comes in contact with an animal infected with the Congo virus due to the presence of the parasite on its skin. Mostly butchers, sheep and animal herders and those who are associated with cattle-farming become victims of the CCHF, which has a 40 per cent to 50 per cent mortality rate.

Third Congo fever patient admitted to JPMC

?A young man of 18-19 years of age had been brought to the JPMC yesterday (Sunday) with a high grade fever, rashes, bleeding from nose and mouth and on suspicion we got him tested for CCHF. The lab report confirmed that he is infected with the dreaded Congo virus,? said Executive Director JPMC Dr Seemin Jamali while talking to The News.

The patient, Mubeen Ahmed, is a resident of Korangi Industrial Area and works at a tannery where labourers deal with hides of cattle, and sometimes they contract the viral disease which is spread through a tick found on the skin of cattle.

Dr Jamali said this was the third CCHF patient of the year who was brought to the JPMC in a critical condition, adding that the condition of two previous patients had improved and they were discharged from the hospital.

KARACHI - At least seven people have contracted Congo virus in Karachi. The medics expressed concern over the inefficiency of health department to find out animals which are getting into Karachi for Eid-ul Azha sacrifice.

Jinnah Hospital Director Emergency Dr Seemin Jamali confirmed that seven people have been admitted to Jinnah Hospital?s isolated Congo virus, while their blood?s samplings have already been sent for further confirmation.

?Two out of them were brought from Quetta while rest came from Karachi,? she added. She further said that although health department has established health counters in all animals markets, they need to be thorough, so that we can avoid any untoward incident ahead of Eid-ul Adha festivities.

The tick-borne viral Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever claimed another life in Karachi early on Monday morning, said officials of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and the Sindh Health Department.

?Salman, son of Abdur Rasheed, a 23-year-old resident of New Karachi, who was brought to the JPMC?s emergency with bruises on his body on Saturday, died early on Monday morning during treatment,? Dr Seemin Jamali, the executive director of the health facility told The News.

The health department?s officials claimed that so far this year 47 patients have tested positive for Congo fever in the province, including those who were brought to hospitals in Karachi from Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Of these 47 patients, seven have died due to complications of the viral infection, they said...

Officials at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) said on Tuesday that they have admitted another Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever patient into the health facility, adding that the elderly man from Balochistan is in critical condition.

?Dost Muhammad, 65, from Quetta was brought to a private hospital in critical condition from where he was shifted to the JPMC for treatment,? Dr Seemin Jamali, the hospital?s executive director, told The News. ?We sent his blood samples for analysis, and the lab test confirmed that he has contracted the tick-borne viral infection.?

So far this year Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever has claimed seven lives in the city, three of whom breathed their last at the Jinnah Hospital while the others at private health facilities...

The contagious Congo virus claimed life of another young man on Sunday named Khan Haidar s/o Janat Mir, from Piro Khel village of Landi Kotal division, Khyber Pakthunkhwa (KP).

The death was the second case of Congo virus in the region after the first case of Salman Shinwari, a twenty years old young man, who died of virus in Islamabad hospital on Saturday.

According to the details, Khan Haider was admitted to Hayatabad medical complex initially, from where he was referred to Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. The precarious condition of Haider did not get better, and he breathed his last in Peshawar on Sunday morning.

It is worth mentioning that the ill-fated Haidar was the attendant of first affected Salman Shinwari, who died in Islamabad hospital...

CHARSADDA: A teenage boy from Dhaki Sahib Gul Mohallah of Charsadda district died of Congo virus in a hospital in Peshawar on Friday.

Zewar Shah, uncle of deceased Adnan, 17, told mediapersons here that his nephew, a grade 10th student, fell ill and was admitted to Tangi hospital.

From there he was referred to rural health centre, Jamalabad, Harichand, where his hepatitis test result came positive, he said.
