Although 22 polio cases have been confirmed in the country so far, the number is likely to increase since over 300 suspected polio cases are currently being processed by the National Institute of Health, Islamabad.
The samples were collected throughout April from patients suffering from acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), a condition characterised by a sudden onset of weakness of muscles and loss of muscle tone. AFP surveillance is the international standard for detecting cases of poliomyelitis in a population.
According to senior officials in the health department, the over 300 AFP cases were reported from across the country and stool samples are being processed at NIH to confirm polio. Therefore, there is a possibility that the number of cases in the country would increase...

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: A police constable on duty to guard a polio team was injured in firing in Mardan district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday.

According to health officials, Pakistan is witnessing an improvement in the polio crisis and the number of cases has declined this year.
This is mainly due to the military?s assistance in dispensing polio vaccines to far-flung areas, especially those which were inaccessible earlier due to militant groups.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has also reported that there have been 24 cases of polio since January this year, which translates to a decline of over 70 percent from last year, when the number was as high as 84.

QUETTA: Health officials on Thursday confirmed that a four-year-old boy has contracted the polio virus in Pashtunabad, on the outskirts of Quetta, taking the number of cases reported in Balochistan this year to four.

PESHAWAR: Two new polio cases were been reported in Khyber Agency on Tuesday, taking the total number of registered polio cases in Pakistan this year to 32.
According to the Chief Minister's Polio Control Cell in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Abdullah son of Mohibullah, a resident of a village in the Shah Khan Khel area of Landi Kotal, was confirmed to have polio virus.
Another case was confirmed by the cell in the Mastak Tehsil, where 18-month-old Sahar Gul was diagnosed with the crippling disease.
The cell said there are now 10 registered cases of polio in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, 13 in KP, five in Balochistan and four in Sindh...

PESHAWAR: Secretary Health Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Mushtaq Jadoon on Wednesday said that the vigorous polio eradication campaigns achieved positive results and only 13 cases were reported in 2015 across the country.

PESHAWAR: Despite the hectic efforts by the national and international donor agencies, Peshawar on Tuesday reported another polio case, raising the total number of polio cases to 14 this year in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Senior officials of the Health Department told The News that a 10-month old girl has been infected with poliovirus.
She fell sick on August 20 and her parents took her to a doctor. The doctor suspected her of polio victim and sent her samples to the National Institute of Health in Islamabad for investigation. The child belongs to Sheikhan Union Council in Town-IV, near the militancy-plagued Khyber Agency.
The government has not been able to conduct regular door-to-door polio campaign in most parts of Khyber Agency due to deteriorating security situation and clashes between the law-enforcement agencies and local tribal militants since 2009...
