One of the eight people affected by the outbreak of Legionnaire?s Disease in Alcoy died in hospital in the early hours of Friday morning, a man in his eighties who is understood to have had an underlying health condition. He was one of the two patients who were seriously ill with the disease, of the eight cases originally reported in Alcoy.

The regional government?s health councillor, Manuel Cervera, confirmed to EFE that a ninth case has now been detected. It?s understood that six of the total are under treatment in the Virgen de los L?rios Hospital in Alcoy, where doctors hoped four of the patients concerned could soon be discharged.

A team of health authority technicians has yet to locate the source of the outbreak.

Two of the eight cases are seriously ill

The Valencia regional government?s health department has activated an outbreak protocol after eight cases of Legionnaire?s Disease registered in Alcoy in the past month. Five of the patients remain under treatment in the Virgen de los L?rios Hospital, where two are reported by Europa Press to be seriously ill. More cases are expected over the coming days.

The health authority has yet to identify the source of the infection, but it?s understood that all eight were in Alcoy throughout the disease?s incubation period. A ten-strong team is currently inspecting the 454 officially-registered refrigeration systems in the town as they attempt to track down the source of the outbreak.

Alcoy has had thirteen outbreaks of Legionnaire?s Disease since 1999, with four deaths amongst the 249 people affected. The town has been clear since the autumn of 2005 and, in December 2007, the regional government lifted the Zone of Special Intervention which was declared in Alcoy in 2002.

M. M. VILAPLANA ALCOI ? VILAPLANA ALCOI?
A 83 year old man has become the first fatality of the new Legionella outbreak that is affecting Alcoi. The patient, who presented prior to infection pathologies, died at dawn yesterday in the Virgin Hospital of the Irises capital del Alcoy, where he was admitted. The Conselleria of Health has also confirmed another patient, which already are nine people have been affected by the bacteria in the current wave of infections.
He was the Regional Minister for Health, Manuel Cervera, who reported on the death yesterday during a press conference held yesterday in Valencia. The patient, 83 years old, was admitted to hospital and Madonna Lilies, apart from legionnaires' disease had other previous pathologies, such as the consequences of a stroke.

Seis personas hospitalizadas Six people hospitalized
In parallel, the Regional Ministry of Health also confirmed the emergence of a new case of infection, so the number of people affected by the new outbreak now stands at nine. Remained hospitalized yesterday at the Hospital Virgen de los Lilies six patients, although it was expected that during the day could be granted discharge to four.
It is recalled that, as reported Wednesday by the director general of Public Health of the Generalitat Valenciana, Manuel Escolano, the first cases were detected in the second half of last July and have been extended throughout the current month August. At his hearing, Escolano already warned that it would continue searching for new infections, taking into account the incubation period of the disease.
Escolano himself attributed the outbreak, the fourteenth Alcoi suffering since 1999 and the first after a long hiatus of three years, any aerosol generating facility. That is why investigations are focusing on the 454 refrigeration equipment that are considered risky counted in the city, and finding something new that had been launched without the authorization.
For now, however, has not been able to locate the source of infection, so the technical team for this work continues to work in this direction.

Hospital Our Lady of Lilies
Reciben el alta cuatro pacientes ingresados con legionella Are discharged four patients admitted with legionella
ALICANTE, 22 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) - ALICANTE, 22 Aug. (IRIN) --

Four remained hospitalized patients affected by legionella in the hospital of Our Lady of Lilies Alcoy (Alicante) received over the Friday discharged from the center, according to Europa Press reported sources from the Regional Ministry of Health. On this day, only stay in the same hospital admitted two patients, although none of them are severe cases.

This latest outbreak of legionella in Alcoy has hit ten people, one of them, a patient of 83 years and affected by a "significant neurological disease," died on Friday morning as a result of the disease. Of the remainder, three did not require hospital admission, four were discharged on Friday and two patients remain hospitalized but none was serious.

The deceased, 83, suffered a "significant" neurological disease, said on Friday the Regional Minister for Health, Manuel Cervera, adding that legionella in warm Mediterranean countries "has a very similar impact" and in the case of the Valencia, "has a very similar impact to other Spanish regions in the Mediterranean".

In this vein, he stressed that the mortality rate in Spain is "superior to the one in Alcoy because with the experience gained in recent years have faster diagnoses and more appropriate treatments," so that the rate mortality is "half" to the Spanish.

Cervera stressed that in this town in Alicante "the revisions are made consistently and automatically" and in the case of water, are held monthly. In fact, he indicated that the latter have given "negative" and added that he has practiced control facilities and seals known and, at present, confirmed that it is conducting "an active search for what may be some risk machine it worked without the knowledge of the Regional Ministry of Health. "We're at that stage of the study and control stage area," he said, adding that there are 10 engineers "working all the time in Alcoy.

Re: Outbreak of Legionaire's Disease in Alcoy, Spain

A few obvious things for those unaware of the background here:

The earlier outbreak in Valencia was three fatal cases of pneumonia in the same family, with approximately the same onset, and occurred well before the H1N1 pandemic began. Two of the three cases had severe underlying medical conditions. Strep pneumoniae bacteria was isolated from all three cases. It is also believed that all three cases had considerable delay from onset to treatment, resulting in the bad outcome. I believe the samples weren't taken until about three weeks after onset of the illness, so they admit it is possible a previous infection might be involved. I am not aware if testing for Legionella was performed on those three cases. No other contacts of the three fatal cases became ill.

This outbreak, on the other hand, is confirmed Legionella.

Legionella (Legionaire's Disease, named after an outbreak in 1976 in Philadelpha at an American Legion conference) bacteria will cause atypical pneumonia, so in the absence of lab testing, it could be mistaken for H1N1 or H5N1, but this outbreak is in a major city, and has been confirmed as Legionella, not H1N1 or H5N1.

Legionella is a BACTERIAL infection, and thus is at no risk of combining with either H1N1 or H5N1. Legionella is present worldwide and does not spread person-to-person at all. It is waterborne, and infection usually occurs through things such as refrigeration and ventilation systems, often resulting in clusters.

And they find the source, a rather unusual one this time.

The infection was in spring water used in machinery to tarmac the streets

The regional government?s health department has located the source of the outbreak of Legionnaire?s Disease in Alcoy which affected 10 people and left one man dead. A team of technicians has been inspecting the 454 officially-registered refrigeration systems in the town, but the infection has now been traced to tarmacing machinery which was used to resurface roads in the areas where the patients were taken ill.

The health department said in a press release on Tuesday that the water used in the machinery was spring water rather than from the mains supply.

The machines have now been disinfected, but more cases could still appear as the incubation period for Legionnaire?s Disease can be as much as 20 days. The latest case was reported last Friday, but as of this Monday, only one patient remained in hospital

A new outbreak has been ruled out for the moment as only two of the cases are connected

Three new cases of Legionnaire?s Disease have been reported in Alcoy, following the outbreak this summer which affected 11 people and killed a man in his 80s. The regional health department say only two of these latest cases are connected and, for the moment, is making no formal declaration of a new outbreak.

The Levante newspaper reports that the Town Hall has sealed off as a precaution two tarmacking machines which were operating in the Beniata area of Alcoy while investigations into the water used by the machinery are carried out.

The summer outbreak was traced to spring water used by other machinery used in the Santa Rosa area of the town.
