Six hospitalized with E.coli-like symptoms

GERMANTOWN, Ohio ?
Public Health -- Dayton & Montgomery County said it is looking into a possible foodborne outbreak stemming from a carry-in picnic in Germantown whose victims suffered from E.coli-like symptoms.

Bill Wharton, a spokesman for the local health department said between 200 and 300 people attended an annual employee appreciation picnic at Neff's Lawn Care, located at 9400 Eckhart Rd., and about 10 of them became ill. Roughly six were hospitalized, Wharton said.

Some of the symptoms suffered by victims are consistent with those of E.coli, he said. This includes bloody diarrhea. It will take time to make that determination, he said.

As a result of eating food at a picnic at Neff?s Lawn Care in Germantown, at least 36 individuals have become ill. Of those, 9 have been hospitalized. Public Health ? Dayton & Montgomery County is continuing an investigation into the cause of the foodborne outbreak. Estimates are that as many as 200-300 people may have attended an annual customer appreciation picnic held by Neff?s Lawn Care, 9400 Ekhart Road, on July 3. Of the ill, 5 have been confirmed to be infected by E. Coli 0157.

Symptoms experienced by those who became ill include stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea. If someone attended the picnic and ate contaminated food, they might still become ill up through July 11. Public Health ? Dayton & Montgomery County is asking that anyone who became ill after attending the event call 937-225-4460 and report their illness.

If someone has become ill as a result of the picnic, Public Health is stressing that the best way to prevent passing the bacteria on to others in your family or those close to you is through frequent and thorough hand washing.

Public Health is continuing to gather information through interviews with those who became ill and those who prepared the food. Investigators are also looking at food sources, food handling and storage practices, food temperature controls, and the potential of cross contamination of the food.

The local health department cautions that those who suspect they may be ill from E. Coli 0157 should not be treated with antibiotics and should not take antidiarrheal medicines. They should seek medical attention and inform the physician what they suspect might be the cause of their illness.

Those affected include a 4-year old female, a 14-year old male, and a 73-year old male. All three are in serious medical condition.

One secondary case of E. coli O157 was reported on July 16. This infection was likely passed from an older sister to a younger sister. This case emphasizes the importance of hand washing to prevent the spread of the organism within the family unit.

A 73-year-old male from the Germantown area died today from complications of E. coli infection.

The man became ill after eating food served at a July 3 customer appreciation picnic at Neff?s Lawn Care in Germantown. The outbreak has sickened at least 75 people, 14 of whom have been hospitalized. Eighteen cases have been lab-confirmed as E. coli 0157 infection...

A 73-year old male from the Germantown area, who has been in serious medical condition as a result of a foodborne E. coli outbreak in the Germantown area has died. Montgomery County Health Commissioner Jim Gross offers, ?Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones. This is a very difficult time for everyone. You may rest assured that Public Health will continue to examine all aspects of this foodborne tragedy.?
