Measles suspected among Amish in Knox County

An apparent measles outbreak in Knox County has public-health experts worried and vehement in their call for vaccination against the fast-moving and potentially deadly virus.

Word of 15 people with measles symptoms in the northeastern part of that county came yesterday as the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned of a surge in infections throughout the country, some linked to an outbreak in the Philippines that has killed at least 50 people and sickened more than 20,000.

At least four of the Knox County residents who had or have measles symptoms recently visited the Philippines with Christian Aid Ministries of Holmes County. The rest of the ill are their family members, said Pam Palm, spokeswoman for the county?s health department.

The suspected measles outbreak is clustered in the Amish community; many Amish haven?t had MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) shots...

KNOX COUNTY, Ohio - Ohio health officials say they have confirmed several cases of measles in the Knox County area.

Officials say the county is dealing with 16 cases of the measles. The initial cases were from unvaccinated travelers who returned to Ohio from the Philippines.

Amish say their measles was misdiagnosed at Holmes County hospital

When a group of Amish Knox County residents returned from a humanitarian trip to the Philippines in late March, two young men became seriously ill and went to a hospital in nearby Holmes County.

But they weren?t told they had measles. Instead, they were told they had Dengue fever, said Tobias Yoder, who organized the trip.

Yoder and two of his brothers are among at least 14 Amish people sickened in a measles outbreak that health officials discovered this week.

Yoder and one brother were the second two to become sick, about 13 days after the first two men fell ill, he said. A doctor told Yoder?s brother that he, like the others, had Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne illness, Yoder said.

?We thought this is amazing that four of us got a mosquito bite, and I?m not ever going to the Philippines again,? Yoder recalled yesterday. ?Then last Saturday, about six more cases turned up and we said, ?What?s happening here??  ?...

COSHOCTON ? The Coshocton County Health Department is investigating two suspected cases of measles Tuesday, after the official said they have confirmed one case of measles in Coshocton County.

According to a release from the Ohio Department of Health, the Coshocton County Health Department, in collaboration with the Holmes County Health Department, ODH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, confirmed one case of measles in the White Eyes area. They are investigating two additional suspected cases at this time. The three individuals involved are from the same family, and were not vaccinated for measles, according to the release...

COSHOCTON ? The number of confirmed measles cases in Coshocton has grown to two.

According to Coshocton County Health Commissioner Robert Brems Jr., one of the two suspected measles cases in the county announced on Tuesday has now been confirmed.

Brems didn?t know at this time if it was the adult male or female whose case was confirmed. On Tuesday, it was announced that one case of measles was confirmed in a man in the White Eyes area. The two other suspected cases were of a man and a woman also from White Eyes. All three are from the same family, and none were vaccinated for measles...

DELAWARE, Ohio - A person seeking treatment for the measles was at a health clinic in Delaware, and officials fear others may have been exposed to the virus.

Officials say the person was at the OhioHealth Marion Area Physicians (formerly known as Smith Clinic) on Thursday between 3:30 and 7 p.m. The clinic is located at 6 Lexington Blvd.

The district is now going to have a walk-in clinic to vaccinate anyone who may have been exposed...

First Suspected Measles Case Confirmed In Delaware

DELAWARE, Ohio -

For the first time in more than two decades, Delaware County health officials say they may have the first suspected case of measles.

According to Delaware General Health District officials, a mother brought a child with a high fever into the emergency room at Grady Memorial Hospital early Sunday morning. They returned a second time just before 12 a.m. Monday. Four days later, the child was showing symptoms consistent with the Measles.

"It was not until later this week, the first of May, when the child started to exhibit the classic symptoms of a rash, which is when the child went to the physician's office," said Health Commissioner Sheila Hiddleson.

The child was taken to the Smith Clinic located on Lexington Blvd. Health officials say it is possible that other people were exposed to the disease if they were in the office or Grady Emergency Room during the mother and child?s visits...

COSHOCTON ? The Coshocton County Health Department has created a measles information line for the public after two new cases of measles were confirmed in Coshocton.

According to Robert Brems Jr., the latest confirmed cases are women who are Amish. One was among the three suspected cases last week, from a family in Crawford Township. The other woman, also Amish and from Crawford Township, is not related to the other three cases. None of the individuals confirmed to have measles had been vaccinated...

PARMA, Ohio ? Students, teachers and staff members might have been exposed to measles at two Parma schools last week, according to school officials.

The possible exposures happened at Parma Senior High School and Thoreau Park Elementary School between April 28 and May 2, the Parma City Schools told parents Tuesday. The district did not say who or how many people might have been exposed...
