Measles outbreak in Ohio complicates 2 big Amish events
Authorities aim to educate, vaccinate before large gatherings

SHILOH, Ohio ? Visitors from around the world to two upcoming events in Ohio?s Amish country could come away with more than they bargained for, health officials fear ? a case of measles from the nation?s largest outbreak in two decades...

...Health officials believe the outbreak is slowing in Ohio thanks to vaccination clinics and door-to-door visits by public health nurses. But Horse Progress Days, an international showcase of horse-drawn equipment scheduled for Friday and Saturday, is expected to draw more than 20,000 Amish and others from around the globe. And a large annual auction that raises money to help Amish families pay medical bills for children with birth defects is scheduled for Saturday.

Authorities are trying to spread education ? and vaccination...

End of measles outbreak could be in sight

The end of the measles outbreak could be in sight with the last confirmed case reported nearly three weeks ago.

The highly contagious disease has a incubation period that can last 21 days, and the last case was reported on June 30.

That means the outbreak could unofficially be over in the upcoming days, said Brian Fowler, chief of vaccine-preventable-disease epidemiology at the Ohio Department of Health...

COLUMBIANA, Ohio - The number of measles and mumps cases spreading across Ohio has started to slow. According to the Ohio Department of Health, there hasn't been a case of either virus reported since late July...

...Since January, 472 cases of the mumps have been reported, while 377 cases of the measles have been confirmed...
