Measles on the rise in Northland with three new cases

There are now nine confirmed cases of measles in Northland, three more than at the end of last week.

The new cases range in age from 25 to 58, none of them immunised and all residents of Whangārei.

Tracing their contacts has identified people had unknowingly visited Whangārei Hospital when they were infectious.

For privacy reasons, the Northland District Health Board would not say if the new cases were visitors or patients...

Canterbury District Health Board is on high alert for new measles cases after finding out an infected passenger caught two domestic flights

Travellers on board two Jetstar flights between Christchurch and Auckland last week may have been exposed.

The infected person had been told to stay at home.

"They had been asked to keep themselves isolated and they, thereafter, got on a flight and flew down to Christchurch against instructions," Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Alistair Humphrey told RNZ.

"They then developed symptoms so tracking back we were able to [find out] that, unfortunately, they were contagious while they were on the flight."

The DHB is advising anyone who travelled on JQ237 on June 6 and JQ236 on June 8 to check their measles immunisation - and stay home from work or school.

"They can return to work if they are still not unwell on Saturday, June 22," Dr Humphrey said...

Bay of Plenty measles outbreak slows

An outbreak of the measles in the Bay of Plenty appears to have slowed.

Medical Officer of Health for Toi Te Ora Public Health Dr Neil de Wet confirmed there had been no new measles cases reported for three weeks.

De Wet said Toi Te Ora Public Health had been continuously monitoring the situation and the last of the cases were in people who had already been placed in quarantine, so they did not pass on the infection.

There have been 20 confirmed cases of measles in the Bay of Plenty since the beginning of April.

The last known confirmed case in the Bay of Plenty was on May 24...

A tenth case of measles has been confirmed in Northland with six cases currently under investigation.

Public Health Nurses are offering MMR vaccination to the children and staff at the schools they are currently visiting for Boostrix immunisation, with parents being given a consent form to return to school. Children having B4School Checks are also being offered MMR if they are not up to date.

"We know that the MMR coverage of our 11-12-year-olds is around 75 percent, and testing for measles immunity suggests that one in five people in Northland aged 13 and 29 are not immune to measles," offered Dr Catherine Jackson, Medical Officer of Health...

Four new measles cases confirmed in Wellington

Four more cases of measles have popped up in the Wellington area, including one person who travelled on the Johnsonville train line last week.

Regional Public Health (RPH) has been notified of the four confirmed cases and are asking people who may have been in contact with infected people to watch out for symptoms.

The infected people visited several public places before they were diagnosed. At the time, they did not know they had measles.

Medical officer of health Dr Annette Nesdale is asking members of the public who visited the following locations at the relevant times, and who are unsure if they are immunised against measles, to call their doctor and check.

Tuesday, June 18:

? Train at 7.59am from Johnsonville to Wellington or the 5.17pm train from Wellington to Johnsonville

? Midnight Espresso cafe on Cuba St between 4.30pm and 6pm

? Daiso shop in Manners St between 6pm and 6.10pm

Three Waitematā DHB staff have contracted measles during Auckland's outbreak

Three staff members at Waitematā DHB contracted measles this year, potentially exposing their colleagues and patients to the illness.

Waitematā DHB – which covers Auckland's west and north suburbs – has seen the highest number of measles cases in the country so far this year.

An update in the DHB's June Health Advisory Committee meeting agenda showed three staff members caught the virus, accounting for the "majority" of contact tracing in the April period...

Regional Public Health (RPH) Wellington has been notified of a case of measles and is asking people who may have been in contact with that person to watch out for symptoms. The infected person visited several public places, including taking a domestic flight from Auckland to Wellington, before they were diagnosed. At these times the person did not know they had measles.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Craig Thornley is asking members of the public, who may have been in the following locations at the relevant times ? and are unsure if they are immunised against measles ? to call their GP during opening hours and advise them of the situation. Anyone requiring assistance during the weekend, or after hours should call Healthline on 0800 611 116.

Dates and known locations for the infectious person:

Monday: 1 July 2019

Auckland Airport (domestic terminal) on 1 July from 15:00 (3pm) to 17:00 (5pm) around the Jetstar check-in area and gate number 24.

Jetstar flight JQ263 on 1 July, departed Auckland airport at 16:00 (4pm) direct to Wellington.

Wellington Airport on 1 July from 17:15 (5:15pm) to 18:45 (6:45pm) around the arrivals area for Jetstar flights and associated luggage areas.
