Since October, there have been 29 confirmed cases of measles in the Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn. The initial child was unvaccinated and acquired measles on a visit to Israel, where a large outbreak of the disease is occurring.
If you plan to travel to Israel, protect yourself against measles and get vaccinated at least two weeks in advance of your trip. If you have traveled to Israel and you have a fever, cough, red eyes, runny nose and body rash, contact your doctor.

What is Measles​

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease (in the lungs and breathing tubes) caused by a virus that is spread by direct contact with nasal or throat secretions of infected people (when a person infected with the measles virus breathes, coughs, or sneezes). Measles is one of the most contagious viruses on earth; one measles infected person can give the virus to 18 others. In fact, 90% of unvaccinated people exposed to the virus become infected. You can catch measles just by being in a room where a person with measles has been, up to 2 hours after that person is gone. And you can catch measles from an infected person even before they have a measles rash.

The initial child with measles was unvaccinated and acquired measles on a visit to Israel, where a large outbreak of the disease is occurring. Since then, there have been additional children from Brooklyn who were unvaccinated and acquired measles while in Israel.
If you plan to travel to Israel, protect yourself and your family against measles and get vaccinated with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine at least two weeks in advance of your trip. If you have traveled to Israel and you have a fever, cough, red eyes, runny nose and body rash, contact your doctor. You should call your doctor before going to their office to prevent exposing other people to measles.

An Erie County resident infected with measles visited eight places between Dec. 4 and Tuesday, posing a risk to anyone at the places at the time of the visits who had not been vaccinated, Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein said Wednesday.

"It?s very, very contagious," she said of the measles infection. "Unfortunately, it can cause very serious infections."

The resident, an Eastern European immigrant who came to the United States on Nov. 27, visited Catholic Charities on Herkimer Street, the Department of Health clinic on William Street, Sweet Home High School, Erie County Social Services on Pearl Street, Aldi and Best Buy on Transit Road, Marshalls on Maple Road and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Burstein said...

The outbreak of the measles that started in Rockland County has spread to Orange County. In a statement released today by the Orange County Health Department, six cases of the highly contagious disease have been confirmed in the county.

Three of the six cases have been confirmed in children who attend school in the county. The Health Department is working closely with the affected school(s) and the individuals have been notified. ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY ?With the county's health crisis continuing to expand, nine yeshivas could each be hit with $44,000 or more in fines for not complying with a health department order. The number of measles cases in Rockland County has almost doubled since the order was issued.

The private schools face a public hearing before the Board of Health Wednesday and fines of up to $2,000 a day since Nov. 15.

Under state law, all schools must maintain lists of their students' immunization status, and keep the list updated. Then, during a public health crisis schools are required to share these lists (as well as any updates to them, for example if a student were to be vaccinated) with the Department of Health...

There are 96 confirmed cases of measles in this Rockland outbreak, and health officials are monitoring another three suspected cases.

The Orange County Department of Health is advising residents of a confirmed case of measles in the County. People who may have visited Satmar Meats of KJ in Monroe on Thursday between 4:30PM and 8PM may have been exposed to measles.

Additionally, the Rockland County Department of Health is advising that people who may have visited the Rockland Kosher Supermarket on 27 Orchard Street, in Monsey on Christmas between 4:30PM and 7:30PM may have been exposed to measles.

If you are not already immune, there are treatments that can be given up to six days after exposure that could help prevent you from developing measles...

As of January 2, 2019, there have been 55 confirmed cases of measles in the Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn since October. The initial child with measles was unvaccinated and acquired measles on a visit to Israel, where a large outbreak of the disease is occurring. Since then, there have been additional children from Brooklyn who were unvaccinated and acquired measles while in Israel. Children who did not travel were also infected in Brooklyn or Rockland County.
The neighborhoods that are affected include:

• Bensonhurst: 1 confirmed measles case (no new cases since November 2018)
• Borough Park: 32 confirmed measles cases (2 new cases in the past week)
• Midwood/Marine Park: 1 confirmed measles case (no new cases since November 2018)

Measles case confirmed in Monroe County

Monroe County has confirmed its first case of measles since 2014, and only its second in the last decade.

County health department spokesperson Ryan Horey said an unvaccinated female toddler is infected with the virus, which she likely contracted on an international trip to an area that was in the midst of a measles outbreak. He said he could not be any more specific about the trip location in an effort to protect the family?s privacy.

Horey said the county does not believe this infection marks the start of an outbreak locally...
