Adamawa cholera outbreak kills 2, others in critical condition

YOLA—Two persons have reportedly died from cholera in two local government areas of Adamawa State.

Eleven cases of the disease have been confirmed in Shelleng and Guyuk council areas and some adjourning towns and communities in four other local government areas.

A statement by Dr Celine Laori, Director of Public Health in the Ministry of Health stated that the ministry received a report of suspected cases of cholera in Shelleng and Gyuku local government areas.

Laori added that the ministry swung into action and collected samples of about 98 persons in over 20,000 populated communities for testing, 11 persons were confirmed positive while two persons died from the disease...

At least two people have been confirmed dead from a cholera outbreak at a facility where ex-Boko Haram fighters are being camped in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The Borno State Government confirmed the deaths at the Kosheri camp along the Maiduguri-Dikwa road. The government also said many other occupants of the camp are sick from the disease and are undergoing treatment.

A source at the camp had earlier told PREMIUM TIMES that the death from the disease was up to 20.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has revealed that 149 persons died from cholera in 2022, out of 5, 451 suspected cases that was reported.

It also attributed the rising cases of cholera across the country to increasing practice of open defecation in the affected communities, in addition to absence of potable drinking water in some of the rural areas and urban slums.

In its weekly epidemiological report, the NCDC stated that children below the age of five years were mostly affected with 47 per cent males and 53 per cent females.

The epidemiological report which was signed by the NCDC Director General, Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, also gave details of the cholera epidemic in 13 states, namely, Yobe (918 cases), Borno (679 cases), Taraba (676 cases), Cross River (650), Katsina (378 cases), kano (333 cases), Jigawa (317 cases), Ondo (283 cases), Zamfara (178 cases) Adamawa (161 cases), Gombe (159 cases), Bayelsa (145 cases) and Bauchi (122 cases), accounted for 92 per cent of all cumulative cases.

Similarly, 12 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across six states, namely, Cross River (3), Taraba (3), Yobe (3), Borno (1), kano (1) and Zamfara (1), reported more than 100 cases each this year...

A cholera outbreak has been declared in Gombe State on 22 September 2022. The first case was reported on 24 August 2022. As of 24 September, a total of 298 cases including ten deaths (CFR 3.4%) have been reported, in 5 of the 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs), with majority of cases being reported in two LGAs: Yamaltu/Deba (98 cases) and Funakaye (93 cases). The other affected LGAs are Gombe (45 cases), Balanga (42 cases), and Nafada (20 cases). Twenty-one cases were on admission in the 5 LGAs as of 24 September 2022.

A total of 10, 217 suspected cases of cholera, including 233 deaths, have been recorded in 31 states this year, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has said.

Director-General, NCDC, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, disclosed this Tuesday during the ministerial briefing and update on COVID-19 response and development in the health sector.

He said there was a 47 percent increase in the number of new suspected cholera cases in August epidemiological week 36-39 (4017) compared with July epidemiological week 31-35 (2151).

He said there had been 933 confirmed cases and 173 deaths from Lassa fever as at Week 39, from 25 states, adding that of all confirmed cases, 71 percent were from Ondo, Edo and Bauchi States. ..

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has announced a total of 10,745 suspected cases of cholera, including 256 deaths, so far in 2022.

The NCDC disclosed this on its Cholera Situation weekly epidemiological report for week 39 posted on its official website, on Tuesday.

The report revealed that 31 States have reported suspected cholera cases in 2022.

A cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of four people, and 130 others were affected in seven wards of the Gusau local government area of Zamfara State.

Tribune Online gathered that the cause of the outbreak could not be ascertained by the community affected in the area.

The district head of Madawaki in the Gusau local government who was represented by Alhaji Shehu Labbo during an enlightenment and sensitisation tour to the community disclosed that the cholera outbreak has affected 7 wards in Gusau local government area.

“Cholera has affected 7 wards of Gusau local government area where about 130 were affected,4 died as a result of the outbreak,” he lamented...

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Cholera is endemic in Nigeria, and outbreaks occur almost every
year with a peak during the rainy seasons. Reports of suspected
cholera outbreak have been reported this year since January and
with cases reported from 19 states of the country. As of 2 October
2022, 31 states have reported suspected cholera cases. These
states include Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi,
Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo,
Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa,
Niger, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe
and Zamfara.

In the month of September 2022, nine states reported 4 153
suspected cases of cholera – Borno (2 626), Yobe (718), Gombe
(317), Zamfara (212), Bauchi (119), Jigawa (95), Sokoto (47),
Katsina (16) and Adamawa (3) with Borno and Yobe States
accounting for 80% of cases reported. There was a 42% increase
in the number of new suspected cases reported in September
Epi week 36 - 39 2022 (4 153) compared to the same reporting
period in August.

Since the start of the outbreak, a cumulative total of 10 745
suspected cases with 256 associated deaths (CFR 2.4%) have
been reported from 31 states. At the moment, the most affected
age group is 5 -14 years. Females (52%) have been affected more
than the males. Eleven states – Borno (3 663 cases), Yobe (1
632 cases), Katsina (767 cases), Taraba (675 cases), Cross River
(649 cases), Gombe (470 cases), Jigawa (417 cases) and Bauchi
(304 cases) account for 86% of all cases for the year.

PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIONS

The Cholera response is coordinated by the national multi-sectoral
Technical Working Group hosted at NCDC, in collaboration
with Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), Federal Ministry of
Water Resources (FMWR), Federal Ministry of Environment,
National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA)
and Development Partners. WHO is supporting the NCDC and
partners in the States to continue implementation of the response
plan in a bid to control the Outbreak:

Multi-sectoral State-level EOC has been activated in Borno,
Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe and Katsina

Ongoing surveillance in all states through the routine
Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response and Event
Based Surveillance supported by NCDC and partners
Providing offsite/onsite support to affected states and follow
up for daily reporting and progress with response activities

Technical support and response commodities has been
provided to affected states. WHO has deployed response
teams especially in the North-east Nigeria (Borno, Adamawa
and Yobe States) to support the response activities.

A workshop was held on cholera case management
guidelines, treatment protocol and SOP harmonization
Supported ongoing testing across state level laboratories
and at NCDC National Reference Laboratory (NRL), Abuja
and Central Public Health Laboratory Yaba-Lagos

Hygiene promotion, provision of safe water, water
chlorination, household disinfection and sensitization on
dangers of open defecation ongoing in high-risk communities
by WASH sector partners and Community Health Volunteers
in the affected states.

Cholera jingles are being aired in English and local
languages on different radio and Television stations. In
addition, community social mobilisation, media interviews,
distribution of Information, Education and Communication
materials and awareness campaigns ongoing in affected
communities.

SITUATION INTERPRETATION
Cholera is endemic in Nigeria and outbreak usually occurs during
the rainy seasons though can occur anytime of the year when
predisposing actors are prevalent. The most affected state– Borno
in Northeast Nigeria, has history of several cholera outbreaks,
with the largest in 2017 with over 5000 cases.

The current situation would require oral cholera vaccination
for these vulnerable population, couples with other public
health response activities, specifically long-term investment in
improving WASH infrastructures will be key to cholera control in
the country especially the Northeast States battling insurgency
for over 10 years.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has announced a total of 19,228 suspected cases of cholera, including 466 deaths, so far in 2022.

The NCDC disclosed this in its latest Cholera Situation weekly epidemiological report for weeks 40–43 posted on its official website on Friday.

The report revealed that 31 states have reported suspected cholera cases in 2022.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by Vibrio cholera, a gramme-negative rod-shaped bacterium.

In Nigeria, cholera is an endemic and seasonal disease, occurring annually mostly during the rainy season and more often in areas with poor sanitation.

The report read in part “Thirty-one states have reported suspected cholera cases in 2022. These are Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, kebbi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.

ABUJA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 20 people have been killed so far in an outbreak of cholera in Nigeria's southern Cross River state, a local official said on Sunday.

Janet Ekpeyong, head of the Cross River Primary Healthcare Development Agency, told reporters in Calabar, the state capital, that the local authorities have launched an investigation into the outbreak recorded across 10 villages in the Abi local government area of the state between Thursday and Saturday.

More than 30 people have been so far hospitalized as a result of the outbreak, Ekpeyong said, noting human and material resources have been deployed to the affected villages to prevent a further spread of the highly virulent disease...
