Seasonal flu incidence is tracking much higher than last year with two confirmed deaths in Auckland and one probable death in Canterbury.

In Auckland a four-year-old boy died after developing pneumonia. Influenza A was detected but no sub-type identified yet, director of the WHO National Influenza Centre, Sue Huang told New Zealand Doctor.

Also in Auckland, a 77-year-old woman with a chronic condition died and the A strain (H3N2) was identified. A 41-year-old Christchurch woman is also thought to have died after contracting influenza.

Comment: I don't know why NZ decided to change the format of this graphic this week. Comparing to the "old" version in post #11, the moving alert threshold has now become constant at its previous maximum. Looking at last week's chart, the alert threshold for Week 31 was around 115 per 100,000, we might have just touched it this week. Now on this new version, we're not even close. Information management & manipulation at its best. - Ro

Comment: NZ continuing with its new flat alert threshold this week, which contradicts its own definition : "Alert threshold (defined as 90% upper confidence interval) indicated here is a level above which, varying by time of year, influenza activity is higher than most years" (emphasis added). Using the older version (see post 11 above for example), the alert threshold for week 32 was about 95/100,000 which has most certainly been exceeded this week. - Ro

INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
In the past week, a total of 154 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 58 general
practices in 18 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 48.4 per 100,000 patient
population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2015 in comparison to the average
seasonal curve in 2000?2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix. The
current rate of influenza-like illness is below the alert threshold.
(The alert threshold being used does not match the definition given, however the current level of ILI activity has fallen below the older threshold for Week 37 which was around 60/100,000 - Ro)
