    INFLUENZA WEEKLY UPDATE
    2014/18: 28 April - 4 May 2014

    The national influenza surveillance system in New Zealand is an essential public health component for
    assessing and implementing strategies to control influenza. This report summarises the data collected from
    sentinel general practice (GP) surveillance and non-sentinel surveillance for week 18 (28 April ? 4 May 2014).


    Summary
     ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 14 out of 20 District Health Boards (DHB) with a
    national consultation rate of 10.8 per 100 000 (31 ILI consultations).
     A total of 145 swabs were received from sentinel (17) and non-sentinel (128) surveillance.
     23 viruses were identified: A(H1N1)pdm09 (10), A(H3N2) (5) including one A/Victoria/361/2011
    (H3N2), B (4) including three B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like virus and one B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus,
    and A (not sub-typed) (4).

    INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE

    In the past week, a total of 31 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 51 general practices
    in 14 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 10.8 per 100 000 patient population. Figure 1
    shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2014 in comparison to the average epidemic curve in 2000?
    2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix. The current rate of
    influenza-like illness is below the seasonal threshold.

    The national influenza surveillance system in New Zealand is an essential public health component for
    assessing and implementing strategies to control influenza. This report summarises the data collected from
    sentinel general practice (GP) surveillance and non-sentinel surveillance for week 19 (5?11 May 2014).


    Summary
     ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 17 out of 20 District Health Boards (DHB) with a
    national consultation rate of 16.4 per 100 000 (47 ILI consultations).
     A total of 227 swabs were received from sentinel (25) and non-sentinel (202) surveillance.
     12 viruses were identified: A(H1N1)pdm09 (4), A(not sub-typed) (3), A(H3N2) (3), and B (lineage not
    determined) (2).

    INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE

    In the past week, a total of 47 consultations for influenza-like illness (ILI) were reported from 55 general
    practices in 17 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 16.4 per 100 000 patient
    population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2014 in comparison to the average
    epidemic curve in 2000?2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix.
    The current rate of influenza-like illness is below the seasonal threshold.

      Summary
       ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 17 out of 20 District Health Boards (DHB) with a
      national consultation rate of 12.3 per 100 000 (37 ILI consultations).
       A total of 205 swabs were received from sentinel (15) and non-sentinel (190) surveillance.
       32 viruses were identified: A(H1N1)pdm09 (14) including nine A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like
      viruses, B (13) including nine B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like and one B/Brisbane/60/2008-like, A(H3N2) (3)
      including one /Victoria/361/2011 (H3N2)-like virus, and A(not sub-typed) (2).

      INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE

      In the past week, a total of 37 consultations for influenza-like illness (ILI) were reported from 58 general
      practices in 17 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 12.3 per 100 000 patient
      population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2014 in comparison to the average
      epidemic curve in 2000?2013 (excluding 2009). For more details on threshold definitions, see Appendix.

        Summary
         ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 17 out of 20 District Health Boards (DHB) with a
        national consultation rate of 14.7 per 100 000 (44 ILI consultations).
         A total of 193 swabs were received from sentinel (14) and non-sentinel (179) surveillance.
         16 viruses were identified: A (not sub-typed) (6), A(H1N1)pdm09 (7) including three
        A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like viruses, and influenza B (3) including two B/Brisbane/60/2008-like
        and one B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like.


        INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE

        In the past week, a total of 44 consultations for influenza-like illness (ILI) were reported from 56 general
        practices in 17 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 14.7 per 100 000 patient

              INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE

              In the past week, a total of 78 consultations for influenza-like illness (ILI) were reported from 57 general
              practices in 17 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 25.9 per 100 000 patient
              population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rate for 2014 in comparison to the average

                          A(H3N2) (23), A (not sub-typed) (99), and B (19) including three B/Massachusetts/02/2012-like.
