How bird migration affects the spread of avian flu

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — In February 2025, a large number of cases of avian influenza were reported, prompting people to be informed about different precautions they needed to take. Presently, it is still a situation that keeps eyes open for any updates.

Even so, birds are not the only kinds of species experiencing this disease. Fall migration started for some bird species in August New York.

Jacob Reiter, Conservation Center Manager for Pace University’s Suburban Biodiversity Conservation Center Wildlife scientist and conservationist with a license in the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and a wildlife rehabilitator, informs how migration is going to look for different bird species this fall.

Reiter starts by explaining that some bird species are still migrating well into November. During migration, each bird species migrates depending on their needs. They are split into two categories. Some birds migrate depending on when the day length gets shorter. Other kinds of birds migrate in response to climate change.

Through those two categories, something that weighs in migration time for different bird species also deals with resource availability.

If they are in their spring and summer areas with lots of food, they will migrate later, but if there is overcrowding with other birds or fewer resources, they will begin migrating earlier.

Birds that are starting to migrate in mid-August are warblers, different types of ducks, and geese like the blue-winged teal.

A lot of these species breed in high latitudes.

If they start migrating now, they are probably in New York now.

Reiter says that different bird species will be making their way down the East Coast.

Some might go into Georgia, others go over the Gulf of Mexico into Mexico, Central America, and South America, heading into October.

Birds that are in the Atlantic flyway are in the New York State area right about now, while birds in the Pacific flyway might be in Oregon or parts of California.

Migration at its beginning this fall brings questions if there may be a rise in bird flu between different bird species.

Reiter says, “I think that it is more than likely probable to see that happening, especially given the rise in the highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza that we are seeing right now.”

Species of birds like waterfowl might carry a low pathogenic flu strain with them at all times, but with a recent highly pathogenic strain (H5N1) of avian influenza that has been seen in the last few years, there is the possibility of more avian influenza cases.

During migration, it is more prevalent for birds to get contaminated with avian influenza due to different bird species being together and travelling greater distances.

The good news is that the migration that takes place in the fall has less of an infection risk between birds than in the spring.

Reiter believes that migration during the spring seems to be when birds are at their highest risk of getting an avian flu infection.

The reason this may be the case is that migration in the fall involves birds spreading out, while during the spring, they are all coming together as they fly north.

For example, birds like warblers, songbirds, and raptors are not gathering in large areas during migration in the fall like they do in the spring. Reiter adds that there is an exception for waterfowl species that tend to largely gather in areas over the fall and winter because that is when they are mating.

While avian influenza is not highly transmissible from birds to humans, it is still possible. The reason for the increase in human cases seen for the past few years deals with how hard poultry has been hit with avian influenza. Multiple chickens and turkeys in American and global poultry farms have been infected with it. In those spaces when one bird gets it, it is very easy to transmit it to other birds.

Avian influenza (AI) is a viral disease in wild birds such as ducks and geese, gulls, raptors, and shorebirds that is commonly called “bird flu.” Some AI viruses are more severe than others and can also affect domestic gamebirds and poultry like chickens, turkeys, and other birds. Those that cause severe disease in poultry are called Highly Pathogenic AI (HPAI) viruses. These viruses can spread quickly in affected flocks.

In early 2022, HPAI was detected in wild birds across several eastern states. In February 2022, the first case of HPAI in New York was found in Suffolk County. At present, HPAI has been detected across the entire country including much of New York State. Some infected wild birds carry the virus without getting sick, which allowed the virus to continue to circulate in bird populations. Mammals, especially carnivores and scavengers that may eat infected animals have become ill and died from HPAI. Dairy cattle in some states have also had HPAI detected. The USDA tracks all detections across the country and offers guidance on how to Defend the Flock.

NYSDEC is working with the NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets, U.S. Department of Agriculture, NYS Department of Health, and the Cornell Wildlife Health Lab to monitor HPAI in New York.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that HPAI detections in birds pose a low risk to the public. There have been a number of human cases in the United States, mostly associated with infections in dairy cattle or poultry, and one human mortality attributed to contact with birds. Hunters and people consuming wild game birds have a low risk of becoming infected, but you can protect yourself by only harvesting game that appears healthy. Cook any game meat to an internal temperature of 165° F, which kills the virus. If you handle live or dead wild birds, particularly waterfowl, gulls, and raptors, you should use personal protective equipment like masks, gloves, eye protection, and rubber boots (cleaned after use). Wash your hands thoroughly when finished.

Of particular interest are reports of suspected outbreaks in all species of waterfowl (like ducks or geese), raptors (such as hawks and eagles), crows, shorebirds, and other waterbirds such as gulls, loons, and herons. Responses to these reports will be guided by the number of dead birds, bird species, and new areas where we have not documented HPAI yet. Once HPAI is on the landscape, there is currently no way to effectively manage this disease in wild birds. In most cases, there will be no direct response.

DEC advises the public to avoid any contact with sick or dead birds and mammals that may be infected with HPAI.People can minimize the risk of spreading HPAI by preventing contact between sick or dead wildlife and domestic animals.

In cases where DEC field staff are not responding to collect samples or carcasses from the landscape, please limit direct contact with dead wildlife and keep children and pets away. To dispose of a dead bird safely:
  • Wear disposable gloves, a mask, and eye protection, like safety glasses or goggles.
  • Avoid direct contact with the carcass or carcass fluids by using a shovel or a garbage bag to pick up the bird.
  • Carcasses should be triple bagged (garbage or contractor bags) and placed in an outdoor trash receptacle.
  • Remove and throw away your gloves. Wash your hands with soap and water immediately after removing gloves.
  • Change your clothes and wash them after disposing of the bird.
  • If you used a shovel, clean it with hot, soapy water and disinfect it with diluted bleach (1/3 cup bleach added to a gallon of water).

If you encounter a live, sick bird or mammal, contact your Regional DEC office or a local wildlife rehabilitator for guidance. There is no treatment for HPAI in birds, so the only option for wildlife rehabilitators is humane euthanasia. Call ahead to make sure there is a wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian willing to accept and euthanize the animal, as accepting these animals may put other animals in the facility at risk. Do NOT handle, transport or euthanize any sick birds or other wildlife yourself.

DEC Reminds New Yorkers to Stay Alert for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) continues to infect birds and mammals across the U.S. and Canada, including New York State. With wild bird mortalities from HPAI increasing in late fall and peaking over the winter months, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reminds New Yorkers to stay alert.

“Under Governor Hochul’s leadership, DEC is taking a proactive approach with our coordinated effort to monitor potential signs of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in wild birds,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton. “We have a great web-based tool for the public to use to report any signs the viral disease is spreading to different areas of the state.”

HPAI is carried by free-flying waterfowl and other waterbirds, such as ducks, geese, and shorebirds, but can also infect domestic poultry, raptors, corvids, and mammals. DEC’s Wildlife Health Program is monitoring the spread and impact of HPAI throughout the state and has an online reporting tool the public can use to report suspected HPAI mortalities: NYSDEC Avian Influenza Reporting Form. Updates on HPAI can be found on the Cornell Wildlife Health Lab website.

DEC advises the public to avoid any contact with sick or dead birds and mammals that may be infected with HPAI.

There is no way to contain HPAI infection in wild birds. Be aware that the clinical signs for HPAI infection in wildlife are nonspecific and may be similar to other diseases or injuries. Waterfowl, waterbirds, raptors, and scavenging birds are at higher risk of infection, but any species could potentially be infected, including mammals. HPAI-infected birds may be asymptomatic or may exhibit signs of respiratory distress (sneezing or nasal discharge), lethargy, neurologic malfunction (ataxia, stargazing, or seizures), diarrhea, weakness, or sudden death.

State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said, “While avian influenza continues to affect wildlife, the risk to humans remain low. New Yorkers can stay safe by avoiding contact with sick or dead birds and animals and reporting anything unusual. We’re keeping a close eye on the situation and will continue to share updates as needed.”

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said, “The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the Department of Health, and the Department of Environmental Conservation are working together to ensure an aggressive, coordinated, and proactive approach in response to outbreaks of HPAI across the nation. Our department’s proactive efforts to prevent the spread of HPAI, including implementing testing and import requirements for dairy cattle, remain in place. In addition, as we are in the midst of the migratory season, we encourage vigilance and remind our farmers to take precautionary measures with strong biosecurity practices on the farm.”

DEC staff response to a suspected HPAI mortality event depends on the specific event. Because the disease is widespread in wild birds and cannot be contained, strategic surveillance is the best approach. DEC prioritizes response to significant mortality events for waterfowl, shorebirds, gulls, crows, ravens, or any eagles or other raptors in counties where HPAI has not been detected. With the exception of larger events, sensitive locations, or vulnerable species, a physical response by staff is not necessary or likely in most cases.

Where DEC staff do not provide a physical response and removal is deemed necessary by the landowner, DEC advises landowners to use disposable gloves, a mask, and eye protection. Additionally, DEC advises against direct contact with the carcass or carcass fluids by recommending the use of a shovel and washing hands and clothing with soap and hot water immediately afterward. Carcasses disposed of in this way should be triple bagged (garbage or contractor bags) and put in an outdoor trash receptacle for trash pickup or deposited at a local landfill.

There is no treatment for HPAI, and transporting suspected HPAI-infected birds to wildlife rehabilitation facilities is discouraged to prevent the spread of the disease to other animals in care. Guidance has also been provided to licensed wildlife rehabilitators to help them minimize risks to animals in their care and to aid them in their interactions with the public.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the recent HPAI detections in birds pose a low risk to the public. HPAI H5N1 has been detected in more than 70 humans in the U.S., including two mortalities; most of these cases involved close contact with infected domestic birds or cows. There is likely little risk for the public, but people with close or prolonged unprotected contact with infected birds or virus-contaminated environments, especially immunocompromised people, are at greater risk of infection. No human-to-human transmission of the virus has been documented.

Status of HPAI in New York State

Since it was first introduced into New York State in January 2022, HPAI has been documented in captive birds in multiple counties and detected in free-ranging wild birds and mammals throughout the state. Wild bird mortalities from HPAI increase in late fall and peak over the winter months, then typically decrease in the late spring and summer months. At this point, it is widespread in wild birds and even suspected to be present in counties where it has not yet been detected. Species of wild birds confirmed as infected in New York State commonly include Snow Goose, Canada Goose, swans, other waterfowl, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, other raptors, crows, and shorebirds. Songbirds and other passerine birds do not appear to be highly susceptible to infection.

In addition to wild birds, HPAI has also been confirmed in red fox, striped skunk, Virginia opossum, raccoon, fisher, gray squirrel, muskrat, and bobcat in New York State, and in a wide range of mammals, particularly carnivores, in other parts of the U.S. In addition to domestic poultry, dairy cattle in other states have also been infected.

In November and December 2025, DEC received 69 reports of suspect mortalities through its online reporting platform, and presumptive positive cases were detected in wild birds in 10 counties. With migration beginning, HPAI incidence may remain high through spring, particularly associated with the migration of large numbers of ducks and geese through the state.

Ahead of the long weekend, the Town of Huntington would like to make residents aware of important public safety information on geese. The Town is aware of recent reports of deceased geese found in and around Heckscher Park. The New York State DEC has been contacted to perform avian influenza (bird flu) testing. At this time, no results have been confirmed.

As we await test results, be sure to avoid handling dead or sick birds, keep pets leashed and away from wildlife, and call the Town of Huntington Animal Control Division at (631) 754-8722 should you require assistance. There are currently no confirmed cases of bird flu in New York State, and the public health risk remains low. State environmental officials are investigating after a large number of dead crows were found behind a grocery store in the Town of Wallkill.

Viewers shared images showing dozens of dead birds in trees and on the ground near a retaining wall behind the Price Chopper on Schutt Road. Officials say there may be close to 100 crows in the area.

Wallkill is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 30,486 at the 2020 census. It is centrally located in the county.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says a preliminary test result for a dead goose found in Hecksher Park shows it was infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
