Bird flu suspected in Peconic Bay waterfowl deaths

By Angela Colangelo
...
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation received numerous reports recently of dead or sick waterfowl along Peconic Bay. The NYSDEC collected three Canada geese on Feb. 16 from the Jamesport area to undergo testing for HPAI.

Those results were not available by press time, so there are no confirmed HPAI detections thus far on the North Fork, only in the county. Local experts are still sounding the alarm.

“There’s plenty of reports of where they’re showing neurological signs when they’re alive,” said Jennifer Murray of Turtleback Conservation Center. “Their head tilts or swimming in circles, lethargy, and that’s what our Canada geese are displaying,” she said. Reports and videos of geese displaying symptoms have been circulating on social media as well.

One of those reports included an estimated 106 dead Canada geese off Simmons Point in Jamesport.

Approximately 600 dead Canada geese, believed to be victims of avian flu, have been removed from around Georgica Pond in the last two days and buried in the sand, Jim Grimes, an East Hampton Town trustee, said Friday afternoon.

"I had 230 geese on Wednesday, on the west side of the pond. Pat Bistrian is down there dredging Georgica Pond, and he helped me out by digging a trench. Today I've collected another 316. I'm now headed over to the east side of the cut where I'm told there's another 75 to 100 birds," Mr. Grimes said. He wore a mask and protective suit as he worked.

Westchester County - Village of Croton-on-Hudson

Informational Update on Avian Influenza ("Bird Flu")
POSTED ON: MARCH 8, 2026 - 10:00AM

This message is being shared by the Village as it represents an issue of potentially broad interest to the community

Over the past few weeks, a number of dead birds have been found by residents on private property or within Village parks. While it is unknown if these birds had avian influenza, the Westchester County Dept. of Health has reported that avian influenza has previously been detected within the county.

At this time, the risk to the general public from bird flu remains low. The spread of avian influenza viruses from one infected person to a close contact is very rare, and when it has happened, it has not led to continued spread among people.

Here are some reminders from the Westchester County Dept. of Health:
  • Avoid contact with birds that appear sick or have died.
  • If you must have direct/close contact with wild birds, sick or dead poultry, or other animals, wear recommended personal protective equipment (PPE). Wild birds can be infected with avian influenza even if they don't look sick.
  • Do not touch surfaces or materials contaminated with saliva, mucous, or feces from wild or domestic birds or other animals with confirmed or suspected avian influenza infection.
  • Take precautions to protect yourself during and after spending time in areas with geese and other wild bird droppings.
  • Do not drink raw milk or consume unpasteurized dairy products like cheese, yogurt and ice cream.
Anyone finding a dead goose or bird in a Village park or other Village-owned property should contact the Department of Public Works at 914-271-3775 to have it removed. If you find a dead bird on your property, it should be disposed of in accordance with New York State DEC guidance. Proper precautions include wearing disposable gloves, a mask, and eye protection. Avoid direct contact with the animal and its fluids; keep children and pets away, use a shovel, and wash hands and clothing immediately after with soap and hot water. Carcasses should be triple-bagged in garbage or contractor bags and placed in an outdoor trash can. Dead birds found on private property can be reported to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) via the NYSDEC Avian Influenza Reporting Form.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The DEC has determined the cause of death of multiple birds found at Seneca Lake.

News 8 received reports that multiple bird carcasses were found at Seneca Lake recently. The New York DEC explained that the melting ice and warmer temperatures caused the bodies to wash up on shore.

The carcasses were sent to Cornell University for testing, where it was confirmed they died of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

Southold advises residents of proper dead bird disposal

Southold officials urged residents to use caution when handling sick or dead birds found on private property — following state findings linking recent Canada goose deaths on the North Fork to bird flu.

Southold Town Supervisor Al Krupski and town environmental analyst Craig Jobes advised residents to limit direct contact with any sick or dead birds that may be infected with the virus.

While Southold Town handles the removal of dead wildlife on town-owned lands, private land owners are responsible for all removals on privately-owned parcels.

New York State Department of Health guidelines to safely dispose of a dead bird state that you should:
  • Wear disposable gloves, a mask and eye protection.
  • Avoid direct contact with the carcass or carcass fluids by using a shovel or garbage bag to pick up the bird.
  • Carcasses should be triple bagged in garbage or contractor bags and placed in an outdoor garbage can.
  • Remove and throw away your gloves. Wash your hands with soap and water immediately.
  • Change and wash clothing after disposing of the bird.
  • If you used a shovel, clean it with hot, soapy water and disinfect it with diluted bleach.
Southold Town will accept dead birds at Southold Town Landfill at 6155 Cox Lane, Cutchogue, for proper disposal following New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Southold Town guidelines.

Statement from the Southampton Town Trustees Regarding Avian Influenza (HPAI)

TrusteesPosted on March 18, 2026

The Southampton Town Trustees are actively responding to an increase in deceased waterfowl and seabirds along shorelines within Trustee jurisdiction, associated with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as Avian Flu (Bird Flu, H5N1), impacting wildlife across New York State.

This situation presents potential health risks to humans, dogs, pets, and other wildlife, particularly through contact with deceased birds and bird excrement. Residents are strongly advised not to handle dead birds and to keep pets away from affected areas.

The Trustees are working in close coordination with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). While municipalities are not required to remove deceased birds and on-site burial is an approved option, the Trustees have determined that a more protective, public health–focused approach is warranted.

We have retained a licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator, as recommended by NYSDEC, to safely collect and remove deceased birds using State-supported protocols, including proper containment and off-site disposal, to reduce exposure risks and ensure full regulatory compliance.

Due to the scale of this event across beaches, wetlands, and waterways, planning is ongoing. Cleanup efforts are expected to begin shortly, potentially later this week or early next week.

The Trustees’ response is limited to areas within Trustee jurisdiction. Property owners encountering deceased birds on private property should follow NYSDEC guidance.

Residents can find additional information on reporting, handling, and disposal here: https://dec.ny.gov/nature/wildlife-health/animal-diseases or contact NYSDEC directly at 518-402-8883.

Residents are encouraged to report locations of deceased birds within Trustee jurisdiction through Southampton Online Solutions (SOS): https://gis.southamptontownny.gov/sos/

The Trustees are taking a proactive, coordinated approach with State partners to address this situation safely and responsibly, and we ask the public to do the same by avoiding contact and following all guidance.

The Hamptons Has a Bird Flu Problem

This winter, hundreds of dead geese fell around Georgica Pond. No one knew how to dispose of the infected bodies, so a local landscaper just winged it.

By Jacob Bernstein
April 8, 2026, 5:01 a.m. ET

Georgica Pond is the brackish coastal pond in East Hampton, Long Island, around which sit the summer homes of the filmmaker Steven Spielberg and the hip-hop mogul Jay-Z.

This winter, however, the pond went from a picturesque location to a horror scene when more than 700 dead geese lined its sandy shore and the surrounding area.
...
Birds have been hitting the beach in Southampton as well, with hundreds showing up on the shores of Sagg Pond in Sagaponack, according to Ryan Murphy, the emergency manager for the Town of Southampton.

“Since 2022-ish, it has been an ongoing issue,” he said. “But typically, the impact has been toward agricultural chickens and ducks that are intended for consumption. This is the first year it’s been seen in a large number of wild water fowl.”
...
The town trustees of Southampton elected to deal with the problem there by hiring Suffolk County Deer Management to cart away the birds. In East Hampton, cleanup landed in the lap of Jim Grimes, a local landscaper who also serves as a trustee for the town. According to Mr. Grimes, the town’s trustees first heard from East Hampton Marine Patrol sometime around Feb. 27.

Almost no one seemed to want to lend a hand to dispose of the bird carcasses, he said.
...
So with a little advice from his son, Noah Grimes, a Texas-based equine veterinarian, Mr. Grimes put on a white coverall suit and an N95 mask and went to work. He dug a two-foot-deep, four-foot-wide, 30-foot-long trench in a secluded area on the southwest side of the pond (past the intertidal zone, he noted), and used his Ford Ranger truck to transport some 200 birds to the site. He hopes it will be their final resting place.

Within days, more than 500 other dead birds were found nearby, although these were buried by Mr. Grimes and his small landscaping crew in a field on Accabonac Road, a few miles away.

All in a day’s work for Island’s ACO: Bird flu cleanup, nurturing infant wildlife rescues

By Ambrose Clancy
...
According to her records, Officer Zahler started removing dead or sick wild fowl from the Island — most of them from beaches— on March 7. By April 8, she had recorded 107 birds; all but five were dead and those were euthanized. Although it’s a large number, Shelter Island has been spared the horrendous losses of wild fowl, she said, that have struck other East End communities.

There have been hundreds, approaching thousands, of birds affected on the North and South forks. Just last week it was reported that 700 dead geese were collected at a pond in the Hamptons.

“Our numbers are not so many, when you compare,” Officer Zahler said. Asked why, she responded, “It could partly be that we’re an island, and sheltered.”
