Dengue: New Caledonia Enters Epidemic Phase;
Vigilance from Everyone Is Essential
A dengue epidemic has been declared throughout the territory.
More than 80 new cases were recorded last week, and the number of affected municipalities
continues to rise. Against this backdrop, the Government of New Caledonia—through its Directorate
of Health and Social Affairs (DASS)—calls upon the entire population to immediately step up
preventive measures.
The situation currently varies significantly across different areas of the territory.
In Greater Nouméa (Nouméa, Dumbéa, Mont-Dore, and Païta), dengue transmission remains
lower and more stable than in the rest of the country. This situation is largely attributable to the
presence—within this zone—of mosquitoes carrying the *Wolbachia* bacterium, which significantly
reduces their capacity to transmit the virus.
However, the risk still exists.
In Greater Nouméa, not all mosquitoes carry *Wolbachia*; it is therefore
still possible to become infected. Even in this area, residents must continue to protect themselves
and eliminate any stagnant water found around their homes.
Outside of Greater Nouméa, viral circulation is more active and spreading rapidly.
This evolving situation demands a collective mobilization from everyone—municipality by municipality,
neighborhood by neighborhood, and household by household.
