PRESS RELEASE

Dengue: New Caledonia Enters Epidemic Phase;

Vigilance from Everyone Is Essential

A dengue epidemic has been declared throughout the territory.

More than 80 new cases were recorded last week, and the number of affected municipalities
continues to rise. Against this backdrop, the Government of New Caledonia—through its Directorate
of Health and Social Affairs (DASS)—calls upon the entire population to immediately step up
preventive measures.

The situation currently varies significantly across different areas of the territory.
In Greater Nouméa (Nouméa, Dumbéa, Mont-Dore, and Païta), dengue transmission remains
lower and more stable than in the rest of the country. This situation is largely attributable to the
presence—within this zone—of mosquitoes carrying the *Wolbachia* bacterium, which significantly
reduces their capacity to transmit the virus.

However, the risk still exists.

In Greater Nouméa, not all mosquitoes carry *Wolbachia*; it is therefore
still possible to become infected. Even in this area, residents must continue to protect themselves
and eliminate any stagnant water found around their homes.

Outside of Greater Nouméa, viral circulation is more active and spreading rapidly.

This evolving situation demands a collective mobilization from everyone—municipality by municipality,
neighborhood by neighborhood, and household by household.

Dengue epidemic: the 700 case mark has been crossed

The dengue epidemic is still ongoing throughout the territory, with more than 700 cases now recorded. While areas outside Greater Nouméa are the most affected, since mosquitoes there do not carry the Wolbachia bacteria, everyone is advised to remain vigilant by the DASS (Department of Health and Social Affairs).

The dengue epidemic was declared by the Department of Health and Social Affairs (DASS) on March 26, amid a surge in new cases. " On Thursday, we surpassed 700 cases, including several hospitalizations ," reports Céline Qaeze, communications officer at the DASS. " There are significant disparities between Greater Nouméa—where 80% of mosquitoes carry the Wolbachia bacteria and therefore no longer transmit the disease—and the rest of New Caledonia. Twenty-six out of 33 municipalities are affected. The most impacted areas to date are Ouégoa, Canala, Thio, and Boulouparis, as well as Pouébo, with multiple identified clusters ." While Nouméa, Dumbéa, Mont-Dore, and Païta have benefited from the Wolbachia program, only 80% of mosquitoes carry the bacteria.

Why this alert?

Dengue fever has returned to New Caledonia, with confirmed cases in the territory . During the rainy season, the presence of stagnant water promotes mosquito breeding and can accelerate transmission.

Some areas do not benefit from the protection afforded by the Wolbachia deployment : the risk of transmission is higher there. Travel between municipalities , particularly during holidays, can also facilitate the spread.

Be vigilant: if you experience fever and pain (head, muscles, joints), consult a doctor immediately . And to avoid worsening the situation: do not take aspirin or ibuprofen if you suspect dengue fever (seek advice from a healthcare professional).

What is dengue fever?

Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes ( Aedes aegypti ). It can cause high fever, headaches, extreme fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and sometimes nausea or a skin rash. In some cases, it can develop into a severe form: it is important to seek medical help quickly .
