Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Jun 21, 2022 2:58 PM AT | Last Updated: June 21

No New Brunswickers died from COVID-19 in the past week, marking the first time in more than seven months no new COVID deaths were recorded, according to figures released by the province Tuesday.

"I think it's significant and it's encouraging," said Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jennifer Russell.

But the province has undertaken a review of all death certificates and the number of COVID-related deaths could change, she told CBC News...

...The number of hospital admissions and current hospitalizations have both also decreased in the past week, along with the number of new lab-confirmed cases, the COVIDWatch report shows.

There were 17 people newly admitted to hospital because of the virus between June 12 and June 18, compared to 23 the previous week.

A child under 10 is among those admitted to hospital. The others include one person in their 20s, two in their 50s, two in their 60s, 10 in their 70s, and one in their 80s.

Those in ICU include two people in their 60s and one in their 70s...

COVID-19 claimed three more lives in New Brunswick in the past week, hospitalizations because of the virus continue to decrease, while the number of new lab-confirmed cases is on the rise after a two-month decline, according to Tuesday's COVIDWatch report, which includes data on the types of variants in the province for the first time.

A total of 1,025 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the past week, up from 828 in the previous report.

That includes 484 cases confirmed through PCR lab tests (up from 425) and 541 people who self-reported their positive rapid test results (up from 403).

The number of PCR tests conducted between June 19 and June 25, meanwhile, dropped to 3,755 from 4,004, Tuesday's report shows...

N.B. records 4 more COVID-19 deaths, while cases and hospitalizations rise
More increases likely, says chief medical officer of health
Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Jul 05, 2022 3:40 PM AT | Last Updated: 10 minutes ago

Four more New Brunswickers have died from COVID-19 in the past week, hospitalizations because of the virus have increased, and the number of new positive cases has nearly doubled, figures released by the province Tuesday show.

More increases are likely, said Dr. Jennifer Russell, the province's chief medical officer of health.

"That's what it's looking like," she said, noting B.C. and Ottawa both announced Monday they're experiencing new waves.

"We're still analyzing the data," Russell said. "We'll know more over the course of the next week.

"In the meantime, the messaging really is about whatever dose you're eligible for, get it."

The latest deaths include four people in their 80s — two from the Moncton region, Zone 1, one from the Saint John region, Zone 2, and one from the Campbellton region, Zone 5, according to the COVIDWatch report...

New Brunswick has 'high' COVID-19 hazard index, warns researcher
stimated minimum 1,700 people being infected with Omicron daily, says Tara Moriarty
Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Jul 11, 2022 5:04 PM AT | Last Updated: 43 minutes ago

New Brunswick's COVID-19 hazard index score is "high" right now, with an estimated 1,700 people being infected with Omicron for the first time each day, according to COVID-19 Resources Canada, a research group funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

That's 213 infections per 100,000 New Brunswickers, as of July 9 — nearly two and half times the national average of 87, says Tara Moriarty, co-founder of the group.

The number of infections is likely even higher when reinfections are included, said Moriarty, an associate professor and infectious disease researcher at the University of Toronto.

The hazard index is calculated based on four equally weighted categories: vaccine protection, current infections and spread, health-care system impact and mortality.

New Brunswick's index is 2.95 — the second highest in the country after Newfoundland and Labrador at 2.98.

Canada's hazard level is listed as "elevated" at 2.04.

Nova Scotia is the only other province with a "high" score at 2.71. All the other provinces are listed as "elevated," except Alberta, which is currently rated as "moderate," although Moriarty suspects that will soon change following the Stampede.

"I'm quite concerned that in Canada, including New Brunswick, we're sort of waiting to find out what's going to happen here until we're actually experiencing it instead of looking at other countries and saying, you know, we need to tell people, 'Get your additional shot, put on your mask, the hazard is high right now, if you're in New Brunswick," she said...

N.B. lowers 4th dose eligibility as COVID claims 4 more lives, hospitalizations nearly double
95 people with COVID are in hospital, including seven in ICU, up from 50 and four, say Horizon and Vitalité
Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Jul 12, 2022 12:53 PM AT | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

All New Brunswickers 18 or older can now get a second COVID-19 booster dose if at least five months have passed since their last dose, the government announced Tuesday.

It comes as New Brunswick recorded four more COVID deaths in the past week, the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has nearly doubled, and almost 2,500 new infections were reported, newly released figures show...

...Two people in their 70s and two in their 80s have died from COVID-19, the province's COVIDWatch report shows. Two of them lived in the Moncton region, Zone 1, and two in the Fredericton region, Zone 3.

Their deaths raise the pandemic death toll to 433.

Horizon and Vitalité health networks have 95 COVID patients as of Saturday, seven of whom require intensive care, their COVID dashboards show. That's up from 50 and four respectively a week earlier.

This includes patients who were admitted for COVID as well as those who were initially admitted for another reason and later test positive for the virus.

Meanwhile the province, which only counts those admitted for COVID, says the number of active hospitalizations and hospital admissions both decreased between July 3 and July 9.

There are 17 people in hospital, down from 19, including two in intensive care, an increase of one, according to the weekly COVIDWatch report.

The number of people newly admitted to hospital for COVID-19 decreased to 15 from 22, it states...

Five more New Brunswickers have died from COVID-19, the number of hospital admissions for COVID-19 has doubled in the past week, and the number of active hospitalizations has also increased as the Omicron subvariants BA.5 and BA.4 continue to take hold, figures released Tuesday show.

Hospital COVID outbreaks continue to rise, as does the number of health-care workers off the job because of the virus, the province's COVIDWatch report shows.

The latest deaths include three people in their 70s and two in their 80s. Their deaths raise the pandemic death toll to 438.

Thirty people were newly admitted to hospital because of the virus between July 10 and July 16, up from 15 the previous week.

Most key measurements for COVID-19 in New Brunswick continued a downward trend again last week, according to the most recent weekly report released by the province.

The most significant drop is in the number of hospital admissions for COVID-19 — they dropped by almost half, with 20 reported last week compared to 39 the week before.

According to the report released Tuesday, 742 new cases were reported between July 31 and Aug. 6. That was down from 747 the previous week, and 938 the week before that.

Also down were the seven-day moving averages for hospitalizations and for PCR-confirmed cases.

The report notes that those who are unprotected by vaccine continue to have the highest rate of hospitalization for COVID-19 and ICU admissions...

The latest deaths include a person in their 60s, a person in their 70s, a person in their 80s and a person 90 or older, according to Tuesday's COVIDWatch report.

Deaths, hospitalizations up, COVID cases down in N.B.
Weekly report shows 6 more people have died, including a person in their 50s
Mia Urquhart · CBC News · Posted: Sep 07, 2022 2:03 PM AT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Hospital admissions and deaths rose while the number of COVID-19 cases went down last week compared to the previous week, according to the province's latest weekly report.

There were six new deaths — one person in their 50s, four in their 80s and one over 90 — compared to four the previous week. That brings the total number of deaths in New Brunswick to 472 as of Saturday. The vast majority — 81 per cent — are people over the age of 70.

There were 589 new cases last week compared to 712 the week before.

"I think the fact that we're in a stable period is a good thing," said Dr. Jennifer Russell, New Brunswick's chief medical officer of health.

She pointed out that deaths have gone up by two, ICU admissions have gone down by two and hospitalizations up by four. Those categories have all been fairly stable over the summer months.

"One thing we noticed is that our peak never ended up being as high as we thought it was going to be and that's a good thing," said Russell.

The highest proportion of hospitalizations for COVID-19 continues to be among individuals aged 70 to 89. Twenty-five per cent of all admissions are for those in their 70s, even though that age group represents only 10 per cent of New Brunswick's population...

N.B. expands access to COVID-19 rapid tests, as virus claims 4 more lives
Province reports decrease in hospitalizations, Horizon and Vitalité report increase
Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Sep 21, 2022 2:37 PM AT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

New Brunswick is making it easier for people to obtain COVID-19 rapid tests, the Department of Health announced on Wednesday, after the province recorded four more COVID-related deaths in the past week.

People no longer need to have COVID symptoms to qualify for a rapid test kit, and the kits will be available for pickup at more locations, particularly in rural areas, including libraries or municipal offices...

...The announcement comes as the virus claimed the lives of four more people, all 90 or older, the province's COVIDWatch report for Sept. 11 to Sept. 17 shows. Their deaths raise New Brunswick's pandemic death toll to 480.

Hospitalizations decreased to 21 from 35, including two people who require intensive care, down from four, according to Public Health.

The province's two regional health authorities, meanwhile, say there are 96 New Brunswickers hospitalized either for or with COVID-19 as of Saturday, up from 81 a week ago.

Unlike Public Health, which only reports people hospitalized because of COVID-19, Horizon and Vitalité also include in their weekly reports those initially admitted for another reason who later test positive for the virus.

Eight people are in intensive care, down from 12, the Horizon and Vitalité COVID-19 dashboards show.

The number of people newly admitted to hospital for COVID-19 also decreased this week to 21, compared to 23 last week, according to the province.

Among the new admissions is one person in their 50s, two in their 60s, 10 in their 70s, six in their 80s and two 90 or older.

The highest portion of hospitalizations for COVID-19 is among people aged 70 to 89, the COVIDWatch report indicates...
