Five more New Brunswickers have died from COVID-19, raising the pandemic death toll to 485, the province reported Tuesday.

The latest deaths include one person in their 60s, two in their 70s, one in their 80s, and one 90 or older, according to the COVIDWatch report for Sept. 18 to Sept. 24.

The number of New Brunswickers hospitalized for or with COVID-19 in the past week has remained stable at 95, compared to 96 a week ago, according to the province's two regional health authorities.

But the Vitalité Health Network saw a 48 per cent jump in its number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized, while the Horizon Health Network saw an 18 per cent decrease, their weekly COVD dashboards show.

Vitalité has 37 patients hospitalized as of Saturday, up from 25 the previous week, with three in intensive care, unchanged, according to its dashboard.

Horizon has 58 active COVID-19 hospitalizations, down from 71, including four people in intensive care, down from five...

New Brunswick COVID-19 deaths, hospitalizations, new cases stable, figures show
5 more people have died from COVID, 19 people are hospitalized because of the virus, 1,053 new cases

The number of COVID-19 deaths, hospitalizations and new confirmed cases remained relatively stable in New Brunswick over the past week, about one month after school resumed without any COVID restrictions, figures released Tuesday show.

But the province's acting chief medical officer of health cautions against reading too much into that.

While it's "good" the numbers haven't increased, a fall surge is still anticipated in the coming weeks or months, said Dr. Yves Léger.

"It's important for New Brunswickers to continue to pay attention every week to COVID updated numbers and report so that they're aware of what's happening in their communities around COVID," he said...

In the seven-day period ending Oct. 8, the province saw an increase in hospitalizations. Another 27 individuals were admitted to hospital for complications with COVID-19, up from the 19 reported last week.

There are currently 27 patients hospitalized for COVID-19, including three in ICU.

N.B. death toll from COVID-19 jumps by 79 after epidemiological review
'Reconciliation exercise' after changed definition last March raises pandemic death toll to 572
Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Oct 14, 2022 2:34 PM AT | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

Seventy-nine more New Brunswickers have died from COVID-19 than previously reported, the province announced Friday.

Public Health detected the discrepancy during a review of all COVID-related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, Mathieu Chalifoux, the province's chief epidemiologist, told reporters during a technical briefing.

"Counts during the Omicron wave did not accurately reflect the situation as it unfolded," he said.

The new deaths raise the province's pandemic death toll to 572.

The province is confident in its new figures, following this "reconciliation exercise — one of the first of its kind in Canada," said Chalifoux...

COVID-19 kills 4 more in N.B., 44% increase in sick health-care workers, new subvariant found
Hospitalizations, new cases and active cases continue to rise, weekly figures show
Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Oct 18, 2022 1:22 PM AT | Last Updated: October 18

COVID-19 has killed four more New Brunswickers, the number of sick health-care workers has jumped 44 per cent, and hospitalizations and new cases continue to rise, figures released Tuesday show.

A new Omicron subvariant with mutations shown to allow it to better evade immunity from vaccination and prior infection has also been confirmed in the province.

A single case of BA.2.75.2 was detected in September, confirmed Department of Health spokesperson Adam Bowie, although it was not listed separately in any of the weekly COVIDWatch reports since then.

"This would have been included within the 'BA.2' percentages of samples," Bowie said in an emailed statement.

The COVIDWatch report provides a breakdown of the five "major branches of the Omicron variant (i.e. BA.1, BA.2, BA.3, BA.4, and BA.5), each of which may have sub-variants contained within," he said.

"The breakdowns provided are meant to inform the public about the most commonly spreading strains of the virus at any given time."...

Most of the people N.B. quietly removed from its COVID death totals had the virus when they died
Province narrowed its official definition of who dies of COVID in March
Robert Jones · CBC News · Posted: Oct 21, 2022 6:00 AM AT | Last Updated: 4 hours ago

New Brunswick health officials retroactively removed 46 people from the province's COVID death totals last week, even though records show 31 had the virus listed as a "cause of death" on their official death registration forms.

Moreover, they would still be counted as COVID-related fatalities in other jurisdictions.

The removals came after health officials in March significantly narrowed the definition of what qualifies as a COVID death in New Brunswick, as fatalities in the province rapidly climbed to alarming levels.

The change "was not announced publicly at the time," according to Department of Health spokesperson Adam Bowie.

New Brunswick last week disclosed that its actual death toll from COVID-19 was higher than it had previously reported, following an epidemiological review that raised the pandemic death toll to 572. The review found 125 deaths between March 1, 2020, and May 31, 2022 should be added to the toll, while 46 previously reported COVID-related deaths should be removed.

The quiet change in definition of a COVID death concerns Gary Myles, whose wife Wendy of 55 years died in March two weeks after catching COVID-19 in the Saint John Regional Hospital. She was initially admitted for a hernia operation...

Weekly COVID-19 deaths more than double in New Brunswick to 9
Hospital admissions stable, new cases down, COVIDWatch report shows

The number of weekly deaths from COVID-19 in New Brunswick has more than doubled in the past week, figures released Tuesday show.

Nine New Brunswickers died from the virus between Oct. 16 and Oct. 22, up from four the previous week, according to Public Health's COVIDWatch report.

This bucks the national and international trend, the report says. COVID deaths in Canada have decreased "over the last few weeks," and global COVID deaths also "continue to decrease since the previous week."

The number of people newly admitted to the hospital because of COVID-19 has remained stable at 29, while the number of people currently hospitalized has decreased by two to 33, including one in intensive care, down by one,...

Seven more New Brunswickers have died from COVID-19 in the past week, hospitalizations have increased, but the number of new cases has decreased, according to figures released Tuesday.

The latest deaths include one person in their 50s, three in their 80s, and three 90 or older. Their deaths raise the pandemic death toll to 592.

Thirty-eight people were newly admitted to the hospital because of COVID between Oct. 23 and Oct. 29, up from 29 the previous week, the province's COVIDWatch report shows.

There are now 43 active hospitalizations due to the virus, up from 33, including two who require intensive care, up one, according to the province.

Meanwhile, the two regional health authorities say there are 167 people with COVID-19 in hospital, as of Saturday, nine of whom require intensive care.

That's a nearly 23 per cent increase from a week ago, when Horizon and Vitalité reported 136 hospitalized COVID patients, including eight in ICU...

Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Nov 08, 2022 12:42 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

COVID-19 has killed seven more New Brunswickers, raising the pandemic death toll to nearly 600, the latest weekly figures show.

A person in their 50s, one in their 70s, two in their 80s, and three 90 or older died from COVID between Oct. 30 and Nov. 5, according to the province's COVIDWatch report.

The virus has now claimed 599 lives since the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of people newly admitted to hospital for COVID decreased in the past week to 23, from 38, according to the report.

The number of active hospitalizations because of COVID also decreased in the past week to 33, from 43, according to the report.

Five people require intensive care, up from two.

Meanwhile, the two regional health authorities say there are 146 people with COVID-19 hospitalized, down from 167, including 10 in intensive care, up from nine.

Unlike the province, which only reports people admitted to hospital because of COVID-19, Horizon and Vitalité include in their weekly reports people initially admitted for another reason who later test positive for the virus...

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of four more New Brunswickers and a child under 10 is among those newly admitted to hospital, but no one is in intensive care, and hospitalizations and new cases have both decreased, according to weekly figures released Tuesday.

The province's pandemic death toll has now reached 603.

New Brunswick recorded six more deaths from COVID-19 in the past week and hospitalizations because of the virus have increased, along with the number of people who require intensive care, figures released by the province Tuesday show.

This bucks the national trend of a decrease in COVID deaths and hospitalizations, according to the COVIDWatch report.

The province's decline in COVID cases, however, is in line with the national picture...

...The latest deaths include one person in their 50s, two in their 80s and three 90 or older. The province's pandemic death toll now stands at 609.

Twenty-four people were newly admitted to the hospital for COVID-19 between Nov. 13 and Nov. 19, up from 22.

The number of active hospitalizations also increased to 32, including six in intensive care, compared to 29 and zero respectively, the province's report says.

According to the regional health authorities, which report people admitted to hospital because of COVID-19, as well as those initially admitted for another reason who later test positive for the virus, there are 95 people hospitalized either for or with COVID. COVID-19 has killed six more New Brunswickers and the number of new lab-confirmed cases of the virus has increased, following a five-week decline, weekly figures released by the province Tuesday show.

Hospital admissions and active hospitalizations because of COVID also increased between Nov. 20 and Nov. 26, compared to the previous week, and include children and youths, but the number of people who require intensive care has decreased, according to the COVIDWatch report.

The number of health-care workers off the job because of COVID-19 has jumped nearly 50 per cent, to 148, the regional health authorities report.

Meanwhile, Horizon and Vitalité, which count people admitted to hospital because of COVID-19, as well as those initially admitted for another reason who later test positive for the virus, show a decrease in hospitalizations and slight increase in ICU admissions.

They say they have 80 people hospitalized either for or with COVID as of Saturday, down from 95 the previous week. Ten people are in intensive care, up from nine...

COVID-19 kills 6 more in N.B., as hospitalizations and cases rise
Fewer sick health-care workers, according to Horizon and Vitalité
Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Dec 06, 2022 2:01 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Six more New Brunswickers have died from COVID-19, the same number as last week, while hospitalizations because of the virus and new confirmed cases have both increased, figures released by the province Tuesday show.

The number of people in intensive care, however, has dropped to zero, from three.

Meanwhile, the two regional health authorities, which count people admitted to hospital because of COVID-19, as well as those initially admitted for another reason who later test positive for the virus, say there are three people in ICU and 102 hospitalized — a nearly 28 per cent increase.

At the national level, COVID deaths continue to decrease and there has been a "slight increase" in COVID-19 hospitalizations, according to the COVIDWatch report.

Case counts and outbreak incidence "continue to stabilize or decrease" across the country, however, some provinces and territories are reporting increasing case counts, the report notes.

Neighbouring Maine, meanwhile, has seen "an uptick" in case counts following a period of general decline, with a seven-day average of 174 cases, up from 122 a week ago, the report says...

New Brunswick reports 9 COVID-19 deaths, confirms 1st cases of new Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5
2 cases of highly transmissible variant, also known as Kraken, detected in past few days, says Dr. Yves Léger
Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Jan 10, 2023 12:01 PM AT | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

Nine more New Brunswickers have died from COVID-19, and the province has confirmed its first two cases of the new Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, which is spreading quickly in the United States and gaining ground in Canada.

XBB.1.5, also known as Kraken, is "the most transmissible" subvariant detected to date, the World Health Organization told reporters during a news conference in Geneva last week.

It also appears to be able to escape immunity but doesn't appear to cause more severe disease than previous variants, officials have said.

"While the Department of Health had previously identified a handful of XBB cases over the previous months, it confirmed two cases of XBB.1.5 in the past few days," Dr. Yves Léger, acting chief medical officer of health, said in an emailed statement Tuesday.

As a result, the department has added a new XBB category to the COVID-19 sequencing results chart in the weekly COVIDWatch report, he said...

..."Deaths remained stable" Jan. 1 to Jan. 7, according to the COVIDWatch report.

The nine people who died were all aged 70 or older.

None of them died during the reporting period in question. One death occurred in late September, two in October, one in November, and five in December, a graphic indicates....

..There were 22 people newly admitted to hospital because of COVID-19 during the week in question, including one who required intensive care, according to the province.

Three of the people were aged 20 to 59, three were 60 to 69 and 16 were 79 or older.

The province no longer provides the number of people currently hospitalized because of COVID as part of the report's recently revised format...
