N.B. COVID-19 roundup: 94 new cases, hold off on Christmas travel plans, Shephard says
COVID 'winter plan' expected Monday, says Health Minister Dorothy Shephard
Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon · CBC News · Posted: Dec 02, 2021 2:29 PM AT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Health Minister Dorothy Shephard says there are 94 new cases of COVID-19 in New Brunswick and people should hold off until Monday to make Christmas travel plans.

"We don't want to cancel Christmas. We don't want to create such restrictions that people cannot enjoy their families," she told reporters Thursday.

But she's "very worried" about the high case counts and "significant amount" of community spread.

It's also unclear what will happen in the coming weeks in Quebec and Ontario, which both have confirmed cases of the new, potentially more transmissible COVID-19 variant omicron, she said.

Public Health is developing a COVID-19 "winter plan," which will be presented to cabinet. "We should know something by Monday," said Shephard.

Asked whether people should wait to plan their Christmas travel, she replied, "Yeah, give me till Monday."

Public Health announced three more COVID-related deaths and 93 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

...The 97 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed Friday, with 75 recoveries put the province's active case count at 711, Dr. Jennifer Russell said.

A person in their 70s in the Moncton region, Zone 1, and a person in their 50s in the Fredericton region, Zone 3, have died as a result of COVID-19.

Unvaccinated people represent a disproportionate number of recent cases and are experiencing more severe outcomes, the chief medical officer of health stressed.

Friday's new cases translates to 8.8 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 vaccinated, Russell said. For the unvaccinated, the rate per 100,000 jumps to 32.9 — nearly four times as much.

"People who are older and who are unvaccinated face the greatest risk from COVID-19 right now," Russell said.

She noted that the rate of ICU admissions for unvaccinated people with COVID-19 is "more than 10 times" that of those who are fully vaccinated.

Russell also noted that among the hospitalized cases, 59 per cent are over the age of 60 — "again showing that age increases your risk."...

New Brunswick is reporting 77 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday as the province prepares to move into the winter action plan announced on Friday in an attempt to reduce the spread of the virus.

The measures under Level 1 of the new plan include masking outdoors when physical distancing cannot be maintained and physical distancing in indoor public spaces that do not require proof of vaccination.

Indoor gatherings may not exceed 20 people.

Retail stores, including malls, salons and spas must either enforce physical distancing, or, if they opt against that, they can ask for proof of vaccination instead.

The new measures will come into place at 11:59 p.m. Saturday. Further restrictions could also come into effect if cases and hospitalizations continue to rise...
