Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- The death toll from the recent eruptions of Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano has reached 206 and nearly 400,000 people have had to flee their homes, a national disaster official said Friday.

Mount Merapi, which looms on the horizon north of the major city of Yogyakarta, erupted October 26. It is located on the island of Java.

"Rescue workers recovered more bodies in the villages," said Haartje Robert Winerungan of the National Disaster Coordination Agency. "In total, there are 150 victims burned to death."

In addition, he said, a total of "380,049 people are still displaced in around Yogyakarta and Central Java."

Rescuers digging through several feet (a meter) of ash discovered nine more bodies on the slopes of Mount Merapi, whose explosive eruption a week ago buried whole villages. As confirmation of more deaths trickled in Sunday, the toll from a series of blasts at the Indonesian volcano rose to at least 250.

The mountain, which has let off blasts of hot gas clouds over the past two days, resumed spewing ash on Sunday as it as done continuously since it roared to life Oct. 26. No new deaths have been reported from the latest flows, which were well within the zone that has been evacuated.

That zone - which has been at 12 miles (20 kilometers) for more than a week - was relaxed Sunday in some areas. In districts on the north and west flanks of the mountain, the cordon is now six miles (10 kilometers) from the crater, according to Muhammad Anshori, an official with the National Disaster Management Agency. He said the change reflected a feeling that these areas were safer...

Yogyakarta. Thousands of Indonesian families returned to their villages Monday even as scientists warned Mount Merapi volcano remained a severe threat and more bodies were found buried in the ash.

Carrying their belongings on motorcycles and pickup trucks, more than 30,000 people had left emergency shelters after the government reduced a 20-kilometre (12-mile) exclusion zone by as much as half in certain districts.

But officials said Indonesia's most active volcano remained a severe threat as search teams pulled another 17 bodies from the ash that seared swathes of the central Javan countryside in a series of eruptions starting on October 26.

"The eruption process is still ongoing but the intensity has reduced significantly. The status is still alert," volcanologist Subandrio told AFP.

Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said 367,548 people were still living in shelters on Monday, about 30,000 fewer than on Sunday.

Most of the returnees were from Boyolali, Klaten and Magelang districts where the danger zone had been reduced.

"We expect more to go home today," he added.

Mount Merapi, a sacred landmark in Javanese tradition whose name translates as "Mountain of Fire", had killed 259 people as of Monday's count.

Since its latest series of deadly eruptions, Java?s Mt Merapi has been spewing volcanic ash clouds into the air. Satellite data are crucial for assessing the eruption?s danger to air traffic and public safety.

Mt Merapi began erupting on 26 October and has killed more than 200 people. Numerous international flights in and out of the Indonesia area have been cancelled due to ash clouds.

Flying through such clouds is a threat to safety because the damaging particles can lead to engine failure.

For instance, on 28 October a Thomas Cook Scandinavia Airbus flew through the Merapi cloud en route from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia, with a stop in Batam. Once in Batam, it was discovered that the engines were damaged and had to be replaced.
Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres (VAACs) are responsible for gathering ash cloud information and assessing the risks to aviation. Australia?s Darwin VAAC is using satellite data of the plume to issue its forecasts...

The primary danger during the eruption at Merapi Volcano has been pyroclastic flows. These avalanches of hot volcanic gases, ash, and rocks descend rapidly and violently, occasionally at speeds over 150 kilometers (90 miles) per hour. Pyroclastic flows are usually channeled by the terrain, but large and violent flows can spread over a wide area.

This false-color satellite image from the ASTER instrument on NASA's Terra satellite shows evidence of a large pyroclastic flow along the Gendol River south of Mount Merapi. Light gray volcanic deposits (either from pyroclastic flows or lahars) fill the course of the Gendol. Just north of the Merapi Golf Course (light red feature) is a much wider area where a pyroclastic flow spread across the landscape, causing almost total devastation. Within this dark gray area, most of the trees were knocked down and the ground was coated by ash and rock. The flow deposits are largely surrounded by healthy vegetation, colored bright red. A light gray ash plume extends the west of the volcano, guided by the prevailing winds. Near the plume, heavy ashfall has coated the fields and forests, coloring them dull red to gray.

Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - The intensity of Mount Merapi`s volcanic activity has remained high in the past week, a senior geologist said here on Tuesday.

"The volcanic activity of Mount Merapi from November 11 to 16 has even been increasing," the head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), Surono, said after a teleconfernce with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from the National Disaster Management Agency command post here.

According to the results of Mount Merapi`s seismic activity monitoring, a volcanic activity was recorded to happen once on November 1 but it increased to six on November 12, 26 on November 13, 31 on November 15, 34 on November 15 and 20 times until 12.00 hours on November 16.

From November 3 to now, Surono said, the volcano was still defined as still continuously erupting but people in the district of Sleman on the slope of the mountain and in Yogykarta,a city at the feet of the mountain could never be able to see the eruption.

"Eruptions and volcanic ash flows have often been seen going westward and felt in Magelang and its surrounding areas," he said.

Surono said right now a quite big crater resulting from an eruption had been created at the peak of the mountain in addition to three smaller craters.

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- The death toll from recent eruptions of Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano has climbed to 273, government officials said Wednesday.

The toll keeps rising as rescuers search for victims of the volcano, which started its recent eruptions on October 26.

The government's volcano alert level remains at its highest level, though officials said last week that the worst might be over.

The recent eruptions displaced nearly 400,000 people, according to the Disaster Management Agency. On Wednesday, 300,957 people remained in temporary shelters.

YOGYAKARTA/JAKARTA, 18 November 2010 (IRIN) - Almost 70,000 evacuees from volcanic eruptions on Mt Merapi on the Indonesian island of Java returned to their homes after the government declared some no-go areas safe again, but the emergency response phase of the disaster is still in place.

"We haven't yet declared the emergency response phase over because Merapi is still on highest alert and there are still eruptions,? Syamsul Muarif, head of the country?s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), told IRIN.

More than 575 people remain hospitalized following recent eruptions.

?We cannot estimate when it will end. As long as Merapi remains on highest alert the emergency phase will remain in place,? he added. When the volcano erupted on 25 October, the government declared an initial 14-day emergency period.

As of 18 November, there are still 296,596 displaced by the volcano, scattered throughout 747 sites in Central Java, according to BNPB. Once the emergency phase is declared over, the authorities will began assessments to build temporary housing, said BNPB?s head of public relations, Hartje Robert.

?The military will build the housing on land made available by different local governments? Only villagers whose houses were destroyed in the eruptions will be entitled to the temporary houses,? he said.

The deadly eruption of Indonesia?s Mount Merapi has weakened allowing the government to further reduce the restriction zone around the mountain, a volcanologist in Yogyakarta said yesterday.

The eruption?s ?intensity has decreased significantly for about two weeks,? government?s volcanologist Surono said adding that officials decided to reduce the danger zone for the second time since last weekend.

In the most threatened areas, south of the crater, the zone was reduced to 15 kilometres from 20 kilometres.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia -- The threat from more than 100 volcanos that dot Indonesia is impossible to predict with any precision.

But that's not the hardest part of the job, says Surono, the head of the country's monitoring agency. The hardest part is getting the message out.
In the days before Indonesia's most volatile volcano awakened from four years of dormancy last month, Surono, who, like many Indonesians uses only one name, said he saw indications that Mount Merapi had more energy pent up in it than he had ever seen before.

But it was not forming its typical lava dome, a glowing red cap that can be seen for miles (kilometers) as magma builds at the summit. In other words, from the villages that cling to its slopes, Merapi didn't look like it was going to blow.

On Oct. 26, a day after Surono put it on its highest alert, Merapi erupted. Ten days later, it expanded its reach, unleashing a surge of gas, rock and other debris totaling 1.7 billion cubic feet (50 million cubic meters), the largest explosion in a century. More than 300 people were killed.

If Surono knew that the biggest eruption in recent memory was imminent, why did the Nov. 5 blast catch many off guard, cutting people down with searing gases as they tried to flee, charring them in their sleep and destroying whole villages?

The fault seems to lie less in failures of prediction than in failures of communication....

"With Merapi, I must talk about nature and culture," he said. "This is not easy."

VIVAnews - Although already started to calm down, Mount Merapi back out hot clouds or often called by local people wedhus trash.

Head of Central Investigation and Technology Development Kegunungapian (BPPTK), Subandriyo confirmed it. "Indeed, last night out hot clouds, occurred at 21:50 until 21:55 leading to Kali Gendol," he said when contacted VIVAnews, Tuesday, November 23, 2010.

He explained, based on observation, the volume of hot clouds are not too big. "Still relatively short distance. Not until beyond the danger zone," he added.

Previously, Head of The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Surono said two days yesterday, Sunday and Monday, Merapi is out hot clouds. Yet four days earlier this mountain quiet calm alias.

Still a hot clouds that glide from Merapi. it marks the eruption or the eruption still occurs. That means, the status of Merapi is still Awas or level IV and is not going to change.

Danger zone is also still remains to Sleman still 15 kilometers from the summit. To the east times Boyong and 10 kilometers to the west times Boyong. "Magelang 10 kilometers, 5 kilometers Boyolali, and Klaten 10 kilometers," said Surono.

JAKARTA, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Tech-savvy Indonesians are using social network Twitter to beat a slow government in delivering relief to disaster victims, after a tsunami and volcanic eruptions stretched official aid capacity in the sprawling archipelago.

The Southeast Asian country of 17,000 islands, where transport can be difficult at the best of times, was hit by a tsunami, earthquakes, floods and volcanic eruptions within the space of a few weeks last month, and the death toll keeps rising.

But when a community-based group near the erupting Mount Merapi volcano, which has killed over 300 people, sent a message, or tweet, on Twitter that food was piling up in the next town and there were no vehicles to pick it up, over a dozen cars lined up to deliver it within 10 minutes.

Mount Merapi in Central Java has killed 322 people since it began erupting late last month, and over 130,000 people are still living in makeshift camps, an official said on Tuesday.

?The Merapi death toll has reached 322 people. More than 130,000 people are still living in temporary shelters,? disaster management official Agam Ferdatama said, updating the previous toll of 309 dead.

?Rescuers found many bodies in the incinerated area of Cangkringan,? he said.

After the villagers, it was the city dwellers’ turn to experience the wrath of Mt. Merapi.

The Code River, which runs through Yogyakarta, overflowed Monday evening, damaging bridges, and submerging hundreds of houses and forcing thousands to flee.

Heavy rainfall from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday in the upper areas of Boyong River flushed out the thousands of tons of volcanic material that had accumulated in the river over the past few weeks during Mt. Merapi’s recent eruptions. The mixture of mud, volcanic material and water then flowed into the Code River, which bisects Yogyakarta.
