Mount Merapi Eruptions - 347 deaths - Thousands displaced

Re: Mount Merapi status raised to alert

Re: Mount Merapi status raised to alert

Mount Merapi, Gunung Merapi (literally Mountain of Fire in Indonesian/Javanese), is a conical volcano located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. It is very close to the city of Yogyakarta, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano, with villages as high as 1700 m above sea level. Although smoke can be seen emerging from the mountain top at least 300 days a year, several eruptions have caused fatalities. Hot gas from a large explosion killed 64 people on November 22 in 1994, mostly in the town of Muntilan, west of the volcano[citation needed]. Another large eruption occurred in 2006, shortly before the Yogyakarta earthquake. In light of the hazards that Merapi poses to populated areas, it has been designated as one of the Decade Volcanoes.

Indonesia orders evacuations as volcano threatens

october 25 , 2010

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia raised its alert for Mount Merapi to its highest level on Monday and ordered people living near the rumbling volcano to move immediately to safer ground.

Seismic activity has escalated dramatically at the volcano on the densely populated island of Java, with increasing lava spurts and about 500 multi-phased volcanic earthquakes recorded over the weekend, officials said.

The state office of volcanology upgraded its alert level to red at 6:00 am (2300 GMT), signalling an eruption could be imminent.

"The magma has been pushed upwards due to the escalating seismic energy and it's about a kilometre (mile) below the crater," government volcanologist Surono said.

From other sources it seems people are reluctant to evacuate, leaving their homes and farms alone. As always stories from elders, saying the mountain will not explode this time. The number of more than 200,000 mentioned in this article probably is an estimation based on a complete evacuation in a radius of 10 km's.

Sources indicate several thousands are evacuated at the moment, most are ready to go, but still waiting, so it seems.

Mining acitivities in the slope of Mount Merapi continued on monday afternoon.

Indonesians eager to return to homes on volcano's slopes

2010-10-27

UMBULHARJO, Wednesday 27 October 2010 (AFP) - Unfazed by the threat of being vaporised by lava, villagers were desperately trying to return home Wednesday to Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano, after eruptions killed 29 people.

Among the dead was an old man appointed by the sultan of Yogyakarta to act as the volcano's spiritual guardian, but the danger was not enough to keep local residents away for long.

At Umbulharjo village about 10 kilometres (six miles) from the volcano's smoking crater, police and volunteers were turning people away at a checkpoint on the road into the danger area.

Locals arrived on motorbikes with bundles of fresh grass for their livestock, saying they wanted to check their homes.

"People are going home with sacks of grass to feed their cows. Some say they need to see the condition of their houses while others want to pick up belongings as they don't have enough clothes at the shelters," said Wawan Fauzi, a villager manning the checkpoint.

Officials said the mountain, Indonesia's most active volcano, was quiet on Wednesday but warned the almost 30,000 people who have fled to temporary shelters not to go back for the time being.

Up to 7,000 more had ignored orders to evacuate the 10-kilometer exclusion zone.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia (AP) - Rescuers scoured the slopes of Indonesia's most volatile volcano for survivors Wednesday after it was rocked by an eruption which killed at least 30 people, including an old man who refused to abandon his ceremonial post as caretaker of the mountain's spirits.

Authorities warned the thousands who fled Mount Merapi's wrath not to return during Wednesday's lull in volcanic activity, but some villagers were desperate to check on crops and possessions left behind. In several areas, everything _ from the thinnest tree branch to couches and chairs inside homes _ was caked with ash that looked like powdery snow.

The latest blast Tuesday night eased pressure that had been building up behind a lava dome perched on the crater. But experts warned the dome could still collapse, causing an avalanche of the blistering gas and debris trapped beneath it.

"It's a little calmer today," said Surono, the chief of Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation. "No hot clouds, no rumbling.

But a lot of energy is pent up back there. There's no telling what's next."
