Locals in Indonesia band together on Twitter to deliver information to victims of the Mount Merapi eruption.

The people of Indonesia can't seem to get a break. The volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi that started Monday, Oct. 26, just isn't letting up. Scientists say the end that Indonesians are praying for isn't around the corner; it's more like a "marathon, not a sprint." With flights being cancelled, shelters at capacity and loved ones still missing, these people need some help.

One group of local villagers, the Jalin Malapi, has taken aid efforts into its own hands. They're using Twitter.

As the Jakarta Globe reports, Twitter has become the key tool for mobilization efforts. The Jalin Malapi's founder, Sukiman Mochtar Pratomo, said, "Within a very short time, we had more than 9,000 followers. We share links from various sources and re-tweet information from people related to the crisis of Mount Merapi." An Indonesian citizen even said the information the Jalin Malapi is providing via Twitter (at @jalinmerapi) is better than what the local government is providing.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia ? Indonesia's deadly volcano erupted Wednesday with its biggest blast yet, shooting searing ash miles into the sky and forcing the hasty evacuations of panicked villagers and emergency shelters near the base.

Soldiers loaded men, women and crying children into trucks as rocks and debris hurled in the air and down the mountain's slopes.

No new casualties were reported immediately after the booming explosion that lasted more than an hour.

"This is an extraordinary eruption, triple from the first" on Oct. 26, Surono, a state volcanologist, said.
...

"This is the first time that the eruption has continued for more than an hour, so I decided to move the shelters to 15 km (about nine miles) away from the summit from 10 km (about six miles) away previously," Surono told Metro TV.

Hundreds of Patients with Ispa and Hypertension

Sleman, CyberNews. Hundreds of citizens of the slopes of Mount Merapi, which lives in barracks on Thursday (4 / 11) started to develop Ispa and Hypertension. They went to various health posts in various Health Command Post, which exist in their respective barracks.

"Every day we deal with patients between 50 to 70 people," said Dr. Nurlely Manurung and Dr Jani Layun in Health Camp Indonesian Red Crescent. "The number of new patients in our post only, so if Terliht clear that the amount to hundreds of people," he added.

Therefore, continued Nurlely, in barracks Hargobinangun which began on Wednesday (3 / 11) night and then moved to the campus Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) that there are three post of Health, namely from Pertamina and one from the health posts of a political party.

"If every post of Health handles an average of 50 patients, clearly amount to hundreds of people. Though the number of refugee barracks is now the number is about 8 places, LHA if each barracks there were two or three health post, you try to multiply yourself how many number of patients every day, "he added.

Of that amount, on average they were attacked by Ispa and hypertension even if there are other diseases are relatively small. Such as eye disease due to rain ash, for example, represents only about 5 to 10 percent. Most, many of them develops a cough, fever, diarrhea and itching.

Indonesia's Mount Merapi erupts again, killing six

JAKARTA | Thu Nov 4, 2010

Indonesia's Mount Merapi blasted ash and gas into the sky on Thursday, killing six more people in the latest in a series of eruptions over the past nine days that claimed 44 lives and forced more than 75,000 to flee their homes.

Heavy rain also lashed the area, cooling flows of lava that were encroaching into some abandoned villages on the slopes of the volcano near Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java island.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, director of disaster risk reduction at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPN), said emergency shelters had been moved to 15 km (9 miles) from the summit from 10 km (6 miles) previously because of the increased strength of the eruptions.

Indonesian volcano erupts again; death toll at 44

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia -- Towering clouds of hot ash gushed from a deadly Indonesian volcano Thursday, forcing motorists in cities 20 miles (30 kilometers) away to use their headlights in broad daylight and raising aviation concerns. The death toll climbed to 44.

As rocks and ash rained from the sky, soldiers helped load thousands of frightened villagers into trucks for a second day, including those living in crowded emergency shelters.

Merapi's more than a dozen powerful blasts and thousands of volcanic tremors and ash bursts since Oct. 26 temporarily shut nearby airports and - in recent days - closed air routes affected by the ash.

With no winds early Thursday, white clouds shot a spectacular 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) into the sky. Gusts later carried the smoke westward, with cities and towns up to 240 kilometers (150 miles) dusted in white power.

"I have asked the air transportation authorities to make sure the ash isn't affecting visibility, " said state volcanologist Surono, as motorists in the ancient city of Yogyakarta, where one airport is located, navigated dust-choked streets.

Officials insisted, however, that a Qantas jetliner forced to make an emergency landing after one of its four engines failed over Batam, an island 800 miles (1,400 kilometers) to the west, was unrelated.
...

Scientists said pressure apparently building inside Merapi's crater may mean the worst is yet to come.

Jakarta. With Mount Merapi clouding the skies as it continues to erupt, a volcanologist warned that the ash could reach Jakarta.

?The situation is very unpredictable. Anything can happen, so it?s better to get ready,? Raden Sukhyar, the chief of the geology department at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said on Thursday.

Sukhyar said the volcanic ash spewing from Merapi had reached most parts of Yogyakarta and Central Java, such as Klaten, Sleman, Solo and Magelang.

Ahmad Sirrullah, a cleric at an Islamic boarding school in Magelang, said the thick ash had caused limited visibility and the students and staff were suffering from shortness of breath.

?The volcanic ash is mingling with the smell of sulfur,? he said.

?Most community activities have been paralyzed.?

There are also reports of the ash reaching Tasikmalaya and Garut in West Java.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia (AP) — A deadly surge of blistering gases cascaded down the slopes of Indonesia's most volatile volcano Friday, torching houses in one mountainside village and triggering a chaotic midnight evacuation. At least 12 people were killed in the inferno and 50 others injured.

Men with ash-covered faces streamed down Mount Merapi on motorcycles and women and crying children packed into trucks, as officials announced over loudspeakers that they were again expanding the volcano's "danger zone."

Even staff at the mountain's main monitoring post were told to move farther from the glowing crater.

Mount Merapi, which means "Fire Mountain," has killed 56 people since bursting back to life on Oct. 26.

Though scientists earlier expressed hope dozens of big explosions in the last week would ease pressure building up behind a magma dome high up in the crater, eruptions Friday appeared to be intensifying.

"We have no idea what to expect now," said Surono, a state expert on volcanos, adding that he has never seen the needle on Merapi's seismograph working with such intensity.

Towering clouds of ash shot from the crater with a thunder-like roar on Thursday morning, sending soot 20,000 feet into the air and dusting towns up to 150 miles away.

Thousands of refugees are moved again, a new safety zone is established. It went from 10 km to 15 km and now to 20 km (13 miles).
Some 15,000 refugees fled to a football stadium, however probably they will have to leave.

The new evacuations makes it hard to provide food to the refugees, MetroTV reports thousands are hungry.

Hardly any milk or other baby needs available.

This eruption was in the middle of the night, surprising people who were at home, thinking they were safe at a distance of more than 15 km (10 miles).
After this very big eruption, later at friday a new eruption was reported.

Death toll from volcano nears 100

Thursday, 4 November 2010

The death toll from Indonesia's volcano has climbed to nearly 100 in more than a week after a blistering gas cloud ripped through a mountainside village.
Hospital spokesman Heru Nugroho said 54 bodies were brought in after the inferno.

More than 66 others were injured, many of them critically with burns.

Men with ash-covered faces streamed down Mount Merapi on motorcycles followed by truckloads of women and crying children, following the massive eruption.

Soldiers helped clear the bodies from the hard-hit village of Bronggang, located nine miles from the crater, and up until Friday considered within the "safe zone".

The death toll since the initial eruption on October 26 - including 44 killed before Friday's massive gas burst - stood at 98.

Re: Mount Merapi Eruptions - 100 deaths - dozens injured - 100,000 internal refugees

The eruption at Merapi is worsening by the hour - I have been following events over at http://bigthink.com/ideas/24817 where the eruptions blog is being used as a point of contact to help keep people on the ground in the area updated about the eruption and its progress.

The ash is causing enormous problems, it is highly acidic and masks are running out - further more the exclusion 'safety' zone is being expanded on an ongoing basis so sheer numbers of evacuees are increasing exponentially. There has been a massive explosion, and pyroclastic flows have been tracked reaching huge distances.

I know we have old threads on making ad hoc masks and have been trawling FT for these to post the info at BT - but wonder if this data has passed into archive as they aint much use as anti-viral masks - but could be of great help here? Help anyone?

Re: Mount Merapi Eruptions - 100 deaths - dozens injured - 100,000 internal refugees

There are also going to be serious problems with water supply - rivers are contaminated with ash and other volcanic ejecta, and rain water is going to be highly acidic - so keeping these people hydrated is going to be the next major problem.

I am researching to see if there are DIY options that people could carry out e.g. adding chalk or similar to collected to water to deacidify it could be an option.

Ideas welcome.

'We're totally overwhelmed': Volcanic ash sets homes ablaze

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia ? A deadly surge of blistering gases cascaded down the slopes of Indonesia's most volatile volcano Friday, torching houses in one mountainside village. The latest inferno killed an estimated 100 people and injured scores of others.

Soldiers joined overnight rescue operations in Bronggang, nine miles from the mouth of the crater, pulling corpses from smoldering homes and streets blanketed by ash three inches deep, then piling them into the backs of trucks.

Dozens of injured ? clothes, blankets and even mattresses fused to their skin by the 1,400 degree Fahrenheit gas clouds ? were carried away on stretchers.

"We're totally overwhelmed here!" said Heru Nogroho, a spokesman at the Sardjito hospital, as the number of bodies dropped off at their morgue climbed to 58 ? making it the deadliest day Mount Merapi has seen in nearly 80 years ? bringing the overall toll to 102, The Associated Press reported.

Mount Merapi, on the outskirts of Yogyakarta city in Central Java, began spewing deadly clouds of ash and superheated gas last week.

'Everything was in turmoil'

Villager Niti Raharjo, 47, was in the hospital with burn wounds to his legs, alongside his 19-year-old son who suffered burns to his shoulder, hands and legs. Raharjo said a strong tremor woke him up and he grabbed his motorbike and the pair rode away.

"The heat surrounded us and there was white smoke everywhere," he said. "I saw people running, screaming in the dark, women so scared they fell unconscious. Everything was in turmoil while an explosion that sounded like it was from a war came along the river ... then it got worse as ash and debris rained down.

When the debris filled the road, they were thrown from the motorbike. "But fear made us get up and get out of the hell, regardless of the burning pain in our feet," he said.

Merapi's booming explosion just after midnight was six times as powerful as its initial blast on Oct. 26 and triggered a panicked evacuation. Men with ash-covered faces streamed down the scorched slopes on motorcycles, followed by truckloads of women and children, many crying.

Re: Mount Merapi Eruptions - 100 deaths - dozens injured - 100,000 internal refugees

Those are some especially monstrous pyroclastic flows. Who would have guessed they'd be getting 100 degree gases that far from the volcano.

I would expect people are getting water from wells. Rivers may have been previously contaminated by livestock. Their domesticated animals don't receive the same vaccinations as some other countries, and water flowing off fields is already unsafe to drink.

The advice here during eruptions with high SO2 content is to stay well hydrated and inside. Washing off surfaces with ash, including streets, can stop stirring up the ash so it won't get into lungs & eyes. I noticed in one photo that there were puddles on the road - hopefully there is enough rainfall (maybe mud falling with it) to keep the ash level down.

On some pictures, they showed the ash on leaves. If crops have too much ash on the leaves, it can stop photosynthesis and kill the plant - this was a threat during the Mt. St. Helens eruption, when only an unseasonable rain saved many orchards and other crops.

Re: Mount Merapi Eruptions - 100 deaths - dozens injured - 100,000 internal refugees

Several reports say:

- ash layer sometimes as thick as aprox 20 cm ; traffic must slow down to 10 miles/hour

- lava and sand is filling streams and rivers - a dike near Yogyakarta is showing cracks - it is feared this will cause floods

- waterpipes / watersystem is broken

- crops destroyed - cattle died;

- every day people go home to feed their cattle and than quickly go back to the "safe zone".

INDONESIA: Thousands more to be evacuated from Merapi area

JAKARTA, 5 November 2010 (IRIN) - Indonesian authorities look set to evacuate thousands more residents near the Mount Merapi volcano on central Java island following fresh eruptions on 5 November, which resulted in about 60 deaths.

At least 265,000 people live in the 20km danger zone and as of 5 November, a total of 160,000 people had been evacuated to government-run emergency shelters in Sleman, Magelang, Klaten and Boyolali districts, the government reported.

"These people are at high risk and we are still trying to force them to move to the shelters," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, director for disaster risk reduction at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), told IRIN.

"The government will use force if necessary to protect the safety of the people," he said, noting some residents had ignored earlier government warnings and died.

Since 26 October, 104 people have lost their lives after Merapi erupted several times, the BNPB said.

Re: Mount Merapi Eruptions - 100 deaths - dozens injured - 160,000 internal refugees

Dutchy has given some mask making links - Thanks.

The problem here is that the safety zone is being ever widened, and disaster response plans did not anticipate the sheer numbers of people involved. Many large groups are trying to evacuate to the new safety zone radius but are hampered by lahars (wet mud pyroclastic flows), lack of transport, clogged roads and more. Many are stuck in villages - one group of 2500 that I am aware of - and they are having to improvise until they can move again to the new evacuation centres. A yet bigger explosive eruption is feared by the authorities, soon.

Stranded groups are considering collecting rain water, but this is heavily contaminated by ash and the SO2 levels are high, so it is very likely to be acid rain - wells and groundwater is also similarly contaminated.

So... I am trying to research DIY water filtration techniques they could use to remove ash, and whether chalk or similar might neutralise acidity (assuming there is any in that region... if not?). As before, any ideas welcome because I am drawing blanks here on some aspects.

Exclusion zones are now starting to encompass not just villages, but cities and so this problem is only going to escalate. One of the largest evacuation centres now is an open air stadium 7km from Yogyakarta's centre- so no protection from either ash fall or acid rain, and I think that even this is now falling into an evacuation zone as it is 20km from the volcano. Lahars will follow river beds, and the centre of Yogy is right in the danger zone (with respect to lahars) - so let us hope that this volcano starts to settle soon.

Think I have solved the water problem, (wonders of ehow - making an emergency water filter, combined with heating filtered water with CaCO3 sources eg shells or chalk) provided that there is scope for people to heat water once filtered. Any other easier solutions, please pm me. thankyou.

MERAPI, Indonesia's most dangerous volcano, could be building towards a huge explosion, the government vulcanologist has warned. <!-- google_ad_section_end(name=story_introduction) --><!-- // .story-intro --><!-- google_ad_section_start(name=story_body, weight=high) -->

This comes after cascades of superheated gases killed at least 122 people yesterday in villages more than 15km from its cone.

As the total death toll since Merapi began erupting on October 26 passed 160, the evacuation zone was shifted out to a 20km radius, 15km outside the northern outskirts of Yogyakarta, a city of 3.5 million people. The Volcano Mitigation and Geological Disaster Agency warned of worse in store as magma pushed towards the surface from depths of 6-8km, compared with a maximum 2km deep when the mountain previously erupted in 2006.

"This is the scenario I dislike the most, because the deepest magma is pushing up now," said the agency's chief, Surono. "The eruptions haven't stopped, the tremors are getting stronger and one big explosion could be the result. I've never seen it act like this. We don't know what to expect."
