Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupts again: witnesses

HARGOBINANGUN, Indonesia — Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupted violently early Saturday, spreading panic and raining ash more than 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) away, witnesses said.

People living near the volcano in Central Java province said the explosion at around 1:00 am (1800 GMT Friday) was louder and stronger than the eruptions that killed 34 people on Tuesday.

Indonesian volcano erupts again on Java island

Jakarta - Indonesia's Mount Merapi sent out new eruptions of hot ash 1,500 metres into the sky Monday morning, sparking fresh panic among nearby villagers, officials and media reports said.

Rescue workers in Boyolali district, about 10 kilometres from the 2,968-metre peak, were using cars, trucks and ambulances to evacuate the area even as some villagers were returning from shelters to feed livestock or check on crops.

Local media described Monday's eruption that began at 10:10 am (0310 GMT) as the biggest since Mount Merapi awoke last week after four years of inactivity.

Merapi sent heat clouds as far as 4 kilometres down its southern slope, and volcanic ash blanketed villages in Klaten and Boyolali districts on the eastern slope, said Sukhyar, chief of the Geological Agency in the nearby city of Yogyakarta.

The volcano first erupted Tuesday, killing 38 people and injuring dozens, according to the National Disaster Management Agency.

Searing volcanic debris burned trees, crops and livestock and blanketed surrounding areas in grey ash.

The government ordered the evacuation of districts within a 10-kilometre radius of the crater.

Which threads do we have here that may be helpful fo people on the ground there? Do we have anything that addresses care of respiratory health caused by volcanic gas and ash, such that they can still keep an eye out and distinguish from flu related issues? This is going on in an H5N1 endemic area.
