Re: Minnesota Reports 5 Influenza Deaths in Week 45

The number of H1N1 flu cases in Minnesota has dropped substantially for the third week in a row, the Minnesota Department of Health reported late this morning.

The number of hospitalizations dropped from 134 to 78 for the week ending Nov. 14, bringing the total to 1,700 since the virus first appeared last spring.

Last week only nine schools reported outbreaks of influenza-like illness, compared to 40 in the previous week and more than 200 per week earlier in the fall. An outbreak means that at least 5 percent of the student body is absent, or at least three children in one classroom.

There were five deaths last week tied to the H1N1 virus, compared to six the week before. That brings the total of Minnesota deaths from H1N1 to twenty-six, plus two that are considered likely to be related to the virus.

Two outbreaks due to influenza were reported in long-term care facilities.

The only number that rose last week was the rate of patients reporting influenza-like illness at medical clinics. The 25 outpatient clinics that function as "sentinel" clinics for the Health Department said flu patients increased from from 1.3 percent to 3.75 percent of all patient visits.

Weekly Influenza Activity: Statistics
updated 4/7/2010
Note: The data on the following pages is a ?for print? version of the weekly influenza statistics available on the web at: www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/flu/stats/index.html

March 28th - April 3rd (13th week of 2010)
The 2009-10 influenza season officially began October 4, 2009. Data reported here start before the official season began and therefore have not been reported in past years.
All data are preliminary and may change as more reports are received.
During week 13 influenza activity in Minnesota remained low.
? No schools reported outbreaks of influenza-like illness this week.
? No outbreaks due to influenza were reported from long-term care facilities (defined as skilled nursing facilities) this week.
? Influenza-like illness visits to outpatient clinics involved in our Sentinel Provider Network remained low this week.
? Since September 1st, 2009, there have been 1,560 confirmed novel H1N1 influenza hospitalizations and 1,820 total novel H1N1 hospitalizations since the virus was first identified in Minnesota.
? Since last Wednesday, March 31st, two (2) additional influenza-type unspecified death was confirmed. One death occurred in December 2009 was influenza A H1N1-associated. The second death occurred in March 2010 and was influenza B-associated.*? Sixty (61) influenza A H1N1-associated deaths, four (4) influenza-type unspecified deaths, three (3) influenza syndrome-no influenza testing done deaths, and one (2) influenza B-associated death for a total of seventy (70) reported since May 2009.
? The most common strain of influenza characterized at the MDH PHL has been 2009 influenza A H1N1.
* During the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, MDH has been making an unprecedented and highly intensive effort to identify and characterize possible deaths from influenza. In many cases, this activity has involved efforts to resolve ambiguous cases and make use of non-routine channels for reporting of potential influenza deaths. As a result, there has been a substantial time interval, in some cases, between the time of death and the time when the death is officially reported.
