Week 8:
1 new pediatric death (influenza B); total 3 One influenza-associated pediatric mortality associated with influenza B from the C Region was reported to MDCH during the past week. Three influenza-associated pediatric mortalities (1SE, 2C), one associated with influenza A and two with influenza B, have been reported to MDCH for the 2010-2011 influenza season.

ILI: 3.4%
During February 20-26, 21 influenza 2009 A/H1N1, eight influenza A/H3, and four influenza B isolates were reported by MDCH Bureau of Laboratories.

6 new hospitalizations: Based on these data, the estimated influenza
hospitalization incidence rate in the catchment area, from October 1-February 26, is 27 per 100,000 for children and 5 per 100,000 for adults.

One new outbreak due to influenza A from the SW Region was reported during the past week. Ten total outbreaks have been reported to MDCH for the 2010-2011 season:
 Influenza A/H3 confirmed: 4 (2SE, 1SW, 1N)
 Influenza A/H1N1 2009 confirmed: 2 (2SW)
 Influenza A, subtyping pending 1 (SW)

Compared to the previous week?s levels, emergency department visits from constitutional complaints decreased; respiratory complaints remained steady.

During February 27-March 5, there were 18 new lab-confirmed influenza hospitalizations within the catchment area (Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties); the total since October 1, 2010 is 28 adult and 34 pediatric cases. Based on these data, the estimated influenza hospitalization incidence rate in the catchment area, from October 1-March 5, is 34 per 100,000 for children and 8 per 100,000 for adults.

One new influenza A outbreak from the C Region, one new influenza B outbreak from the C Region, and one new outbreak (rapid test positive but
type unknown) from the SW Region were reported during the past week. One outbreak reported from the SW Region last week had both influenza A/H3 and influenza B confirmed in different patients. Thirteen total outbreaks have been reported to MDCH for the 2010-2011 season.

One pediatric mortality from the SE Region associated with influenza B was reported during the past week. One case due to influenza A from the SE Region, previously reported in the March 24 report, could not be confirmed and will be removed from MDCH case counts. Five influenza-associated pediatric mortalities (2SE, 3C), one associated with influenza A and four with influenza B, have been reported to MDCH for the 2010-2011 influenza season.

ILI: 1.1%
One new nursing home outbreak associated with influenza A was reported from the SE Region. Two previously reported nursing home outbreaks, one from the SW Region and one from the N Region, were both confirmed as influenza A/H3.

During March 20-April 2, there were 7 new lab-confirmed influenza hospitalizations within the catchment area (Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties); the total since October 1, 2010 is 46 adult and 46 pediatric cases. Based on these data, the estimated influenza hospitalization incidence rate in the catchment area, from October 1-April 2, is 46 per 100,000 for children and 13 per 100,000 for adults.
