Week 40: No Activity
MDSS data for the week ending October 9th indicated that aggregate influenza case reports and individual influenza reports remained similar to the previous week?s levels. Aggregate influenza cases and individual influenza cases are lower than levels seen during the same reporting period in 2009.

Emergency department visits from constitutional and respiratory complaints remained steady compared to the previous week?s levels.

During the week ending October 9, 2010, the proportion of visits due to influenza-like illness (ILI) remained at low levels at 0.6% overall.

Ten sentinel laboratories reported for the week ending October 9, 2010. All labs (SE, SW, C, N) reported no influenza A or B positive test results. Testing volume is slowly increasing at most labs. One SE lab reported several positive RSV test results.

MDSS data for the week ending November 13 indicated that aggregate and individual influenza reports remained similar to the previous week?s levels.

Emergency department visits from constitutional and respiratory complaints remained steady compared to the previous week?s levels.

During November 7-13, no influenza isolates from Michigan residents were identified at MDCH Bureau of Laboratories. Eleven sentinel laboratories reported for the week ending November 13, 2010. One lab (SW) reported one influenza A positive lab result. Two sites (1SE, 1C) reported low levels of RSV positives.

MDSS data for the week ending November 20 indicated that aggregate and individual influenza reports remained similar to the previous week?s levels.

Emergency department visits from constitutional complaints increased slightly, while respiratory complaints decreased slightly, compared to the previous week?s levels. In the past week, there were ten
constitutional alerts in the SW(3), C(6) and N(1) Influenza Surveillance Regions and six respiratory alerts in the SE(2), SW(1), C(2) and N(1) Influenza Surveillance Regions.

ILI: 0.7% overall; this is below the regional baseline of 1.8%. Activity increased in two surveillance regions: North (0.4%) and Southwest (0.7%); and decreased in the remaining two surveillance regions: Southeast
(0.2%) and Central (1.2%).

Based on these data, the estimated influenza hospitalization incidence rate in the catchment area, from October 1-January 15, is 8 per 100,000 for children and 0.6 per 100,000 for adults.

During February 13-19, twenty 2009 influenza A/H1N1, eleven influenza A/H3, and ten influenza B isolates in Michigan residents were reported by MDCH Bureau of Laboratories. 17 sentinel labs (SE, SW, C, N) reported for the week ending February 19, 2011. 16 labs (SE, SW, C, N) reported influenza A positives, of which 9 (SE, SW, C, N) had high flu A activity. 11 labs reported flu B positive results, of which 4 labs (SE) reported increasing flu B positives. 16 sites (SE, SW, C, N) reported RSV positives, of which 5 labs (SE, SW) reported high positives. Testing volumes remain high.

During February 13-19, there were 13 new lab-confirmed influenza hospitalizations within the catchment area (Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties); the total since October 1, 2010 is 14 adult and 24 pediatric cases. Based on these data, the estimated influenza hospitalization incidence rate in the catchment area, from October 1-February 19, is 24 per 100,000 for children and 4 per 100,000 for adults.
