Mexico City.- The Government of Mexico confirmed 55 cases of monkeypox in the country while expanding prevention, surveillance and control measures for the disease, for which the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a international health emergency.
In a statement, the Mexican Ministry of Health (SSA) reported that, as of July 23, 55 cases have been confirmed in nine states of the 32 that make up the country. Mexico detected its first case on May 28. After being declared a public health emergency of international importance (ESPII), the WHO presented a series of recommendations for the member countries of this organization.
"The ESPII declaration meets several criteria, not necessarily because it is a serious or rapidly spreading disease," the SSa noted in the note.
In addition, he said that the WHO “considers it as mild, self-limited and of low transmission. Its clinical features, transmission mechanisms, and rate of spread are considerably different from COVID-19.” For this reason, Salud de México said that the new phase of the package of preventive interventions "incorporates the issuance of a second Epidemiological Notice of Monkeypox for all medical and public health units."
In addition, he said that they present the clinical practice guidelines for standardized care and the automated call center will be enabled to guide people and facilitate access to care. While on the specific website for monkeypox various informational materials for health promotion will be presented, health personnel will be trained and awareness and risk management workshops will be held for key populations, among other measures.
"The guidelines for epidemiological surveillance and laboratory diagnosis, in force since the beginning of the epidemic in May 2022, have guided the timely detection and confirmation of suspected cases," the agency said.
The SSa recalled that the disease is transmitted by direct contact with infected animals such as monkeys and rodents; by exposure to secretions of an infected person through mucous membranes or skin lesions. Also, by eating undercooked meat and other animal products contaminated with the virus. Other known mechanisms include respiratory droplets and objects contaminated with the body fluids of the sick person.
He specified that in Mexico monkeypox is not an endemic disease, so transmission is mainly through close contact (including sexual intercourse) with infected people during their period of contagion or through contaminated objects (clothes, bedding, towels). and others).
