Monkeypox in Mexico: there are 48 infections, according to PAHO
This represents a 40% increase in infections when compared to those registered until last week.
July 19, 2022
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported that until the end of Monday, July 18, in Mexico there is a record of 48 confirmed cases of monkeypox, also known as monkeypox, which represents an increase of 13 cases in relation to to Monday of last week, so one could speak of an increase of close to 40% in infections.
According to what was revealed, about 94% of the cases occurred in men and, of these, 60% are people living with HIV/AIDS (human immunodeficiency virus / acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). The entities affected by the presence of the virus are Baja California, Mexico City, Colima, State of Mexico, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Quintana Roo and Veracruz.
To expand the information on the presence of monkeypox in Mexico, PAHO specified that this disease has not left a single death. In addition, he mentioned that the most susceptible age group is 30 to 49 years; however, the Organization pointed out that there are alarming data in relation to the registered cases.
This is because the cases registered in Mexico have already begun to be community infections, that is, without travel history, so it was suggested to the national government that diagnostic techniques be decentralized to study the transmission of smallpox more widely. bow.
In this regard, it should be remembered that the federal administration, headed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), is in charge of monitoring transmission through the network of laboratories coordinated by the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (Indre), itself that updates its database and spreads it globally.
It should be noted that monkeypox has recently arrived in Quintana Roo, this is because the Ministry of Health (SSa) reported this Monday the first case of this disease in the coastal state. In this regard, it was reported that the infected person is male and is of legal age, who is stable and in isolation; however, neither his age nor the suspected form of transmission were specified.
It was explained that on Monday the 11th, the man requested medical attention after he presented multiple symptoms related to monkeypox, such as skin lesions (exanthema), headache (headache), muscle pain (myalgia) and low-grade fever.
Reason for which the health authorities followed the corresponding action protocol and he was placed in isolation. Subsequently, several samples were sent to Indre, which confirmed that, indeed, it was the first case of monkeypox in Quintana Roo.
Although the first case has already arrived in Quintana Roo, most of the cases are concentrated in Jalisco and the national capital, in fact, the first monkeypox patient reported in Mexico was on May 28 and, according to Hugo López -Gatell, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, was a 50-year-old person who lived in New York and traveled to CDMX.
Around the world, the various health institutes have confirmed more than 11,000 cases with a high incidence in Europe, this is because the old continent hosts 80% of the cases, followed by America with 18% and finally, with 2%. , is Africa. In such a way that the health authorities urge the population, particularly the traveler, to be aware of the symptoms that this disease may cause, this by virtue of detecting cases in time and being able to act accordingly.
