It seems likely that most, if not all, cases listed in this outbreak had contact with each other - or with the same place (the East Station), which would mean most likely that the index cases in each transmission chain were exposed to the same person's germs, which would mean that they were all contacts. That would seem to be the most likely determining feature of who gets included in the numbers that are being reported. It seems implicit in all of the news items that contact tracing was done to find all clinically similar cases (in type of symptoms, if not always degree), before flu testing was complete, and that that's where the numbers of people they're following come from. *IF* this is true, then we appear to have a disease transmission cluster with a high case fatality rate. *IF* that's true, would it be simply a statistical anomaly (because some clusters are just going to have more fatalities than others, with no significant differences in the virus), and/or related to differences in the individuals affected (greater vulnerabilities for whatever reason), and/or related to potential differences in the virus? Maybe we'll never know.

I guess I should clarify my previous post - I don't mean to suggest that all individuals being followed had contact with all other individuals being followed; rather, I'm trying to suggest that there was likely a (branching) contact chain that connects all of the individuals. And yes, deceased case #3 does seem likely to have contracted it directly from deceased case #1. Where in the chain was deceased case #2?

Hello Biologist and welcome to Flutrackers!

I think that Mexico will be open and honest with the results of their studies of this virus as soon as they know, as they have asked the world many times over to share.

Imo, I believe we will find there are many more cases once testing is complete and hopefully then the numbers will match up better. (Excluding the cobalt issue of course.) The deaths of the officers are a bit worrisome and that may be a different issue all together.

Also, Mexico has just gone through the coldest weather in 40+ years. Snow, below freezing temps, lack of heat, water (broken pipes) and people congregating in small masses in closed in areas. Besides those who had no shelter at all. Especially in this location. I have been expecting a rise in flu cases. Seems to fit. Of course also, the number of cases near the boarder in El Paso. We really haven't seen much flu here since a year ago and now other states are reporting a rise in cases so that would fit the pattern also.

Just my thoughts, hoping for the best.

We actually know from previous experience with H1N1 that severe and fatal cases can actually be the hardest to confirm, because the virus can be deeper in the lungs.

Sudden onset (the patient remembers well the time of onset) with fever, headache, pain in muscles and joints, fatigue, watery eyes, sore throat and cough.



How is influenza diagnosed?



Is clinical, through medical care to people.

If not addressed on time if it can be complicated, therefore it is recommended to go to the nearest health unit if you have the above symptoms



Is there a treatment for influenza?

There are drugs that make the disease more bearable, shorter and reduces symptoms, if administered during the first 48-72 hours of illness.

A third reported death from H1N1 in Chihuahua

Ciudad Ju?rez, 26 Mar 11 .- This Saturday is the third recorded death from the H1N1 influenza outbreak in the state.

The state Health Department reported the death of Isidro Guti?rrez Palma, Road Agent Juarez, who was a fellow officer's patrol Rodolfo Aaron Knight died Tuesday and was officially recognized as the first fatality of the disease this season.


The two agents were infected last week, but Knight died just three days after being admitted to a clinic, while Gutierrez remained in intensive care until he died Saturday.


At the time were reported 25 possible cases of H1N1, but not yet confirmed, although the Secretariat itself acknowledges that the [picture] for that type of influenza.


On the other hand, the state capital was reported unofficially that the PRI deputy Liz Aguilera have been infected and would be hospitalized in stable condition.


The incident was reported by people close to her family, but not confirmed by Congress or the Department of Health.


If true the above, the remaining 32 deputies and staff of the legislative body must undergo clinical studies. (EL UNIVERSAL)

I do not believe these are border patrol officers. I think the articles indicate these are simply traffic cops, who would be far less likely to encounter an intentional release of such agents.

This could happen here in Mexico imo. Most of the traffic is trucks full of fruits and vegetables. I don't know about how they perform the irradiation process here. I know they are approved to use it. But it is possible a "traffic cop" could accidentally have been exposed in this manor if someone moved those fruit and veggie pallets too soon. Traffic cops have a checkpoint at every state too. Seems more likely than from a hospital? (If this is an issue at all.)

They also fog the trucks at each Stateline. So much agriculture. The "traffic cops" also perform this action. It's like a toll booth that the trucks stop in.

I don't think we need to have such an unusual exposure at this point. H1N1 is capable of producing severe, even fatal illness in healthy individuals in rare cases. There is no evidence that either officer was given Tamiflu at all. There have been several threads on FT in which H1N1 has caused two linked fatalities before, and the presumption of most of these sources now is that is what has happened again here.

The article below suggests that the vehicles have an "interlock" installed in them which requires one to blow into it to start the vehicle to ensure that the driver is not drunk. That likely resulted in the spread of the H1N1 virus person to person.

The pandemic virus is still out there...
