Flu abating in Massachusetts, but new deaths reported



BOSTON (AP) ? State health officials have reported seven more confirmed deaths from the swine flu over the past couple weeks in Massachusetts, but the number of people reporting flu-like illness has declined over that same period

According to the latest flu report from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Thursday, a total of 24 Massachusetts residents have died since the H1N1 outbreak began in the spring. Half of those deaths have been reported since Oct. 4.

The most recent confirmed deaths include one child under the age of 4, three people between the ages of 45-64 and three people 65 or over.

Officials say they're encouraged by the overall drop in Massachusetts residents reporting flu-like symptoms to health care providers. But they say there's no way of knowing if the downward trend will continue.

My comment - there was one death last week and I didn't post the report - due, ironically, to having the swine flu - btw, we're all fine now.

ILI activity continues to decline and has now reached a level that is slightly below what is expected for this time of year. Please note that while Outer Metro Boston seems to have highly elevated ILI activity, these data are based on only one reporting site and must be interpreted with caution.

The majority of cases are not tested. Currently, all novel influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus samples from MA have been characterized as A/California/07/2009-like (H1N1)v. The influenza B isolate from MA has been characterized as B/Brisbane/60/2008-like, which is the influenza B component of the 2009-2010 seasonal influenza vaccine.

The median age of cases is 15 and cases ranged from 0 to 92 years. To date, males and females have been equally impacted by H1N1. Overall, 402 cases have been hospitalized (20%) and 31 cases have died. Of the 31 deaths, 27 had known underlying conditions.

There have been no positive specimens for seasonal influenza A since early June 2009
Surveillance samples are being tested for presence of oseltamivir resistance by evaluating a point mutation in the N1 NA gene target, which results in a histidine replaced by tyrosine at residue 275 (H275Y) in the NA protein. To date there have been two specimens from MA with this mutation conferring oseltamivir-resistance.
