Manitoba reports 239 COVID-19 cases as numbers continue to rise
New 4th-wave high surpasses projected daily rate of 223 cases by Christmas
CBC News · Posted: Dec 17, 2021 12:31 PM CT | Last Updated: 27 minutes ago

Manitoba reports 239 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, the highest single-day increase since June, and one death.

That new fourth-wave high comes after provincial modelling shared earlier this week suggested Manitoba could see 223 cases per day by Dec. 25, given anticipated impacts of the highly contagious Omicron variant.

The current seven-day average for daily cases sits at 183.

There are two new cases of Omicron, which experts say spreads much more quickly than the Delta variant. The two newly confirmed cases bring the total found in Manitoba to eight.

The provincial test positivity rate decreased slightly to 6.5 per cent, down from 6.6 per cent on Thursday. The rate in Winnipeg sits at 5.5 per cent, up from 4.4 per cent on Wednesday.

The number of COVID-19 patients in hospital remains at 139, including 33 in intensive care...

There are 302 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths posted on the provincial coronavirus data website on Tuesday.

The Winnipeg health region has the majority of the latest cases with 200...

...Of the 302 cases reported Tuesday, 60 (20 per cent) are in people who were not vaccinated against COVID-19 and 12 (four per cent) are in people who were partly vaccinated. The other 230 (76 per cent) are in fully vaccinated people.

However, when it comes to severity of symptoms, the caseload shifts toward those who are unvaccinated.

Up to 1/3 of new COVID-19 cases may be Omicron as Manitoba reports 400 cases, 2 deaths
7-day average daily case count in Manitoba now at 281, highest since June 6
Darren Bernhardt · CBC News · Posted: Dec 22, 2021 11:25 AM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Manitoba public health officials announced 400 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths on Wednesday.

That's the highest daily total since May 28, when there were 493. And it has pushed the provincial five-day test positivity rate to 9.9 per cent, a level not seen since June.

That's a significant jump from the 8.6 it was at on Tuesday...

...The two deaths are a man in his 50s from the Winnipeg health region and a man in his 70s from the Southern Health region...

..."Things are rapidly changing and evolving," said Dr. Jazz Atwal, deputy chief provincial public health officer.

The latest counts most likely underrepresent the true number of coronavirus cases at the moment, some health experts say...

...Atwal estimated one-quarter to one-third of all new cases in Manitoba are now Omicron. That is a guess, though, and sequencing will ultimately tell the tale...

...The seven-day average daily case count in Manitoba reached 281 on Wednesday, which is the highest running average since June 6, when it was 284.

As of midnight, there were 87 patients in intensive care. That number includes patients receiving both COVID and non-COVID care. The critical care program's normal, pre-COVID baseline capacity was 72 patients.

Of the 400 cases reported Wednesday, 72 (18 per cent) are in people who were not vaccinated against COVID-19 and 19 (five per cent) are in people who were partly vaccinated. The other 309 (77 per cent) are in fully vaccinated people.

However, when it comes to severity of symptoms, the caseload shifts toward those who are unvaccinated.

Among people hospitalized with active COVID-19, 51 per cent are unvaccinated and 45 per cent are fully vaccinated.

And of the patients being treated for active COVID-19 in intensive care, 83 per cent are unvaccinated, six per cent are partly vaccinated and 11 per cent are fully vaccinated...

Due to the holiday season some COVID-19 testing site hours of operation may have changed. Check locations and hours before you go at https://manitoba.ca/covid19/testing/locations.html.

Vaccine

When attending a first- or second-dose vaccine appointment, people are reminded to bring their completed consent form (available online at https://protectmb.ca), wear a short-sleeved shirt, wear a mask, and bring their health card or other form of identification. To help support good physical distancing on site, people should arrive no more than 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment time.

To have the fullest protection possible against COVID-19 going into the holiday season, Manitobans are encouraged to get their second and third doses as quickly as possible. While COVID-19 vaccine appointments continue to be available at regional or provincial vaccine clinics, for many people the fastest way to be immunized is at a nearby medical clinic, pharmacy or urban Indigenous clinic. Check the online vaccine finder or a medical clinic or pharmacy near you that provides the COVID-19 vaccine to find the next available opportunity to be immunized.

The timeline between second and third doses and eligibility criteria information can be found at https://manitoba.ca/covid19/vaccine/...-criteria.html.

A total of 2,407,710 doses of vaccine have been administered in Manitoba, including 56,550 first doses given to children ages five to 11. This represents 45.2 per cent of children in that age group. As of today, 84.8 per cent of all eligible Manitobans ages five and up have received at least one dose of the vaccine, 78.3 per cent have received two doses and 18.8 per cent have received three doses.

Many Manitoba vaccine sites as well as pharmacies and clinics are offering walk-in and appointment-based vaccination for COVID and seasonal flu. Eligible individuals can book their appointments online, by calling (toll-free) 1-844-626-8222 (1-844-MAN-VACC) or by contacting their local pharmacy or medical clinic directly. Visit www.gov.mb.ca/covid19/vaccine/finder.html for some of the available options.
