Three Dengue Deaths Last Week


KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Bernama) -- Three deaths, two in Selangor and another in Sarawak, due to dengue were reported in the week between June 27 and July 3, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.

He said a total of 1,051 cases of dengue fever were reported nationwide during the period, an increase of 113 cases or 12 per cent from the previous week.

Nine states recorded an increase in cases - Johor (65), Selangor (49), Penang (17), Sarawak (10), Kedah (4), Perlis (3), Kelantan (3), Federal Territory (3) and Negeri Sembilan (1), he said in a statement Thursday.

He said that until July 3, a total of 24,240 dengue cases, with 81 deaths, had been reported nationwide, compared with 25,234 cases and 62 deaths during the corresponding period last year.

Of the 359 gotong-royong planned in hot spot areas during the past six months, he said only 149 or 41 per cent were carried out.

On Chikungunya, he said, a total of 10 cases were reported during the period between June 27 and July 3, from 105 cases the previous week.

He said eight of the cases reported last week were in Sabah and the other two in Sarawak.

Squads to collect pledged organs


BENTONG: The Government will soon form teams of specialist doctors in each state to speed up the harvest of donated organs.

Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the squads would comprise specialists of different organs and that health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican was studying how best to implement the system.

?Not just any doctor can harvest all the organs. The heart specialist may only be able to harvest the heart. He may not be able to harvest the kidney or other organs,? he said after launching the Bentong Health Carnival yesterday.

He explained that there were delays currently in harvesting pledged organs after a donor passed away, especially if they were outside of Selangor.

Currently, there is only one team based in Kuala Lumpur Hospital that specialised in organ harvesting, he said.

?If someone in Pahang donated his organ, the team has to fly there by helicopter to harvest the organ. We need to set up teams at state level and look into the networking on how to harvest the organs in the shortest possible time,? he said.

In Malacca later, Liow said Malaysia and China would work towards medical cooperation in research and development on communicable diseases through the setting up of a research laboratory at the Institute of Medical Research in Kuala Lumpur.

He described the cooperation as a step forward following the close ties forged during the Influenza A(H1N1) outbreak last year when both countries shared information about the disease.

Speaking to reporters after hosting a luncheon for his Chinese counterpart, Dr Chen Zhu, during a one-day visit to Malacca, Liow said the research would cover a wide range of communicable diseases, including that of dengue and malaria.

Apart from this, he said a centre of excellence in traditional Chinese medicine would also be set up in Malaysia through collaboration with China.

He also said that all hospitals would be directed to only allow senior doctors to carry out examination of suspected dengue cases.

This was to avoid such cases being turned away by hospitals, he said.

He was asked to comment on a report that a patient was turned away by Malacca Hospital on Friday after tests carried out by doctors failed to detect that she had contracted dengue.

The woman later admitted herself in a private hospital where she was confirmed to have the virus.
Liow said earlier that state health directors had been told to form at least 1,000 communication behavioural impact (Combi) teams to combat the surge in the illness.

?We hope all Rukun Tetangga can form Combi volunteer teams in residences and urban areas. This is the best method to wipe out dengue.?

He said that 25,942 cases of dengue have been recorded as of July 14 with 82 deaths.

3 more die as dengue cases rise in 10 states


KUALA LUMPUR: Three deaths from dengue fever were reported between July 11 and 17 this year, out of a total of 1,043 cases.
The victims were:

- a 46-year-old housewife in Pangsapuri Sutera, Taman Kajang Utama, Selangor -- a place noted for the high prevalence of Aedes mosquitoes. This is about 200 metres from five dengue outbreak areas, where 14 cases have been reported since February.


- a 21-year-old student living at Apartment Rusilia, Taman Pinggiran Putra, Selangor.


- a housewife, 51, from Taman Cahaya, Alor Gajah, Malacca. Aedes mosquitoes were found to be breeding in a broken down toilet pump and in flower pots.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said although there was a two per cent decline in cases, compared with the previous week's 1,061, the situation remained worrying with 10 states showing a rise in cases.


They are Terengganu, Kelantan, Perlis, Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Penang, Johor, Sabah, KL/Putrajaya and Kedah.

Dengue cases getting serious, says Liow


KUALA LUMPUR: Dengue cases have reached an alarming level with seven more deaths this week.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said 26,927 cases with 91 deaths were recorded this year, against 26,770 cases and 66 fatalities over the same period last year.

?This is very serious as the number of deaths so far this year has surpassed the total number last year at 88,? he told reporters after attending the Malaysian Dieticians? Asso*ciation Scientific Conference at a hotel here yesterday.

On the average, Liow said three to five deaths were reported during the recent rainy season.

?It is getting serious, everyone must do their part in curbing the menace,? he added.

He urged all communities to conduct gotong-royong to maintain the cleanliness of their housing areas.

He also reminded doctors to be alert to dengue fever symptoms among patients.

?People must seek treatment immediately if they develop symptoms of dengue fever,? he said. ?Dengue patients have a chance of recovering if proper treatment is given on time.?

34 dengue hotspots now


SUNGAI PETANI: The number of dengue hotspots has increased to 34, with Selangor having 17, which is the highest in the country.

The other states with high number of cases are Johor (six) and Sarawak (five).

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said health officers would act against property owners if their premises were found to be breeding Aedes mosquitoes.

“Our officers have found Aedes mosquito larvae in 50% to 60% of the homes of patients down with dengue.

“Many of the cases were in urban areas, including housing schemes,” he said after visiting the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here yesterday.

Liow said offenders would be compounded a maximum of RM300 per offence while repeat offenders would be taken to court.

From January to July 24, he said there were 27,415 dengue cases reported, including 91 fatalities.

A rise in dengue cases down south

JOHOR BARU: The state recorded a total of seven deaths due to dengue between Jan and July this year, which is an increase of four cases compared to the same period last year.

State Health department deputy director Dr Fatimah Othman said the increase in deaths due to dengue was worrying and the public should take note of the rise.

?Aedes mosquitoes are capable of adapting themselves to their surroundings.

?The mosquitoes will breed even after we have fogged an area, hence people must be mindful of the cleanliness of their premises or homes.

?The reason why there is an increase in dengue fever cases is because there are more breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

?Potential breeding grounds are places where clean water is stagnant such as plastic cups and even satellite dishes,? she said during the campaign to combat Dengue in Kampung Melayu Majidee here recently.

Concern Over More Dengue Cases In Kelantan

KOTA BAHARU, July 31 (Bernama) -- Kelantan health authorities have expressed concern over the rise in the number of dengue cases in the state this year.

State Deputy Director of Health Dr Wan Mansor Wan Hamzah said the state recorded 1,707 cases of the disease, including five deaths, this year up to July 24 compared to 1,031 cases, including one death, during the corresponding period last year.

Three of the five deaths this year occurred in the Pasir Mas district and the two others in the Kota Baharu district, he said.

"The rise in the number of cases is of concern and measures are being taken to prevent further spread of the disease," he told Bernama at the launch of the "Jom Ganyang Aedes" (Let's Destroy the Aedes Mosquito) campaign for the Kota Baharu district, here.

He said the programme was an extension of the campaign at the national level launched by Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Dr Wan Mansor expressed disappointment over the lackadaisical attitude of the community towards the anti-dengue campaigns, saying this was a reason for the higher number of cases.

"Of the estimated 200 people who participated in the gotong-royong programme, the local people comprised only a handful.

"What is more saddening is that even the next-of-kin of dengue patients did not care to keep their house surroundings clean and free of Aedes breeding grounds," he said.

Dengue On The Rise In Pahang

KUANTAN, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- Pahang has recorded 887 dengue cases until Aug 1 this year, compared to 582 cases during the same period in 2009.

State Local Government, Environment and Health Committee chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun said the number of cases increased by 50.7 per cent from the previous year.

Kuantan showed the highest number with 505 cases, followed by Temerloh (87), Rompin (62), Bentong (50), Maran (43), Raub (36), Jerantut (28), Lipis (24), Bera (24), Pekan (17) and Cameron Highlands (1).

He said the State Health Department had also identified seven problematic localities in Kuantan and one in Bentong.

The Health Department, he said, had taken preventive and control measures which included fogging 870,025 premises, while search and destroy missions were conducted on 291,156 premises with abate being placed into 52,655 containers to kill larvae.

Hoh added that 2,977 premises had been found to be aedes breeding areas, of which the highest were at construction sites, factories, abandoned premises and government buildings

Increase In Deaths Due To Dengue Fever- Liow

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The number of fatalities due to dengue fever continues to increase with 67 deaths recorded since January this year until yesterday, from 67 deaths during the corresponding period last year.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said a total of 29,255 cases of dengue fever had been reported during the period this year compared with 27,989 cases last year.

"The increase of 38.8 per cent in deaths due to dengue fever and 4.5 per cent increase in cases of dengue fever is worrying. It is a serious threat and should be given attention to by the public," he told reporters after opening a seminar on "Kapitan Yap Ah Loy" here Saturday...

Two More Deaths Due To Dengue


KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- Two deaths due to dengue fever were reported during the seven-day period from Aug 1, said the Director-General of Health, Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican.

He said both cases occurred in Melaka.

"The first case involved a 46-year-old woman clerk working in a bank, while the second case involved a 34-year-old man working as a manager in a private company," he said in a statement Wednesday.

He said the total number of fatalities also increased by 40 per cent to 94 cases compared with 67 deaths during the same period last year.
He said that during the period under review, there were 987 cases reported compared with 1,101 cases during the previous week.

"There were six states which showed an increase in the number of cases last week namely Melaka which reported an increase of 55 cases, Penang 11 cases, Terengganu (7), Negeri Sembilan (4), Perak (2) and Labuan (1)," he said.

Dr Mohd Ismail said that during the same period, there was one case of Chikungunya reported, a drop of one case compared with the four cases reported in the previous week.

"The one case reported was in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur/ Putrajaya," he said.

He said the cumulative figure for Chikungunya was 729 cases, a drop of 76 per cent (2,317 cases) from the same period of 2009 (3,046 cases).

Aedes larvae found in homes of 50% of dengue death cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Aedes larvae were found in the homes of more than 50% of dengue death cases this year, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

"We must take a serious proactive approach in fighting dengue. It is important to be aware that our homes can be breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquitoes," he said Sunday after launching a blood donation campaign here.

So far, 95 people have died from dengue this year, with 30,350 cases recorded as of Saturday, an increase from the 67 deaths and 28,659 cases for the same period last year, he said.

There were 847 cases for the 32nd week alone with one death recorded in the Federal Territory, he said, adding that they were meeting dengue experts to find ways to combat the disease.

On the drug-resistant NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-lactamase-1) superbug identified in India and Pakistan, Liow said the Institute of Medical Research was conducting a study on the bacteria, which was not well-known.

"We are waiting for the results before making an announcement. We do not want to cause unnecessary alarm.

"We are concerned about this bug as any bacteria, especially super bacteria, can cause harm to the body. There are no details from WHO (World Health Organisation) yet," he added.

The superbug reportedly caused the death of a Belgian man and infected several from the United Kingdom, Australia and United States who had travelled to India for surgery. The Belgian man was reportedly infected by the bacteria after he was hospitalised in Pakistan for a leg injury, following a car accident.

According to the US? Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, NDM-1 is an "enzyme that destroys many commonly used antibiotics, rendering them ineffective."

Earlier, Liow encouraged people to donate blood, especially during the festive season when the supply often ran low.

He added that 565,604 blood units were donated to the National Blood Centre last year, and 73% were repeat donors.

Dengue fever death toll reaches 100

BENTONG: The health minister has raised the alarm bells on dengue fever after receiving news of the 100th death of the year.
Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the latest case had raised the number of dengue cases to 31,375. The victim was a 46-year-old man from Kota Baru.

"These are critical times. The total number of deaths has increased by 40 per cent this year compared with the corresponding period last year.

"We reported 29,183 cases with 67 deaths last year," he said at the Bentong Health Carnival yesterday.

Liow urged the public to give its fullest cooperation in gotong-royong programmes, including following the advice of the ministry.

"The ministry has declared a war against dengue, but we cannot do it alone.

"There is a need for concerted effort from all parties."

265 dengue outbreak sites declared in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: A high dengue alert has been issued nationwide following two more deaths, taking the toll to 103 between January and August this year. There were only 68 deaths recorded last year.

The Health Ministry has also declared 265 localities nationwide as dengue outbreak sites. Of the total, 21 sites are dengue hot spot localities, with 274 cases reported.

At the dengue hot spot localities here and in Johor, Sarawak, Selangor and Kelantan, the ministry has put up signboards at strategic locations alerting people to the disease.

Last week, 1,159 people were infected with the deadly disease compared with 1,074 the previous week. This brings the total number of cases to 32,688, compared with 29,700 cases in the same period last year.

Director-general of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican also directed all doctors in public and private hospitals to check patients who come in with dengue symptoms thoroughly before sending them home with medication...

...As at the end of last month, Selangor topped the list with 12,936 cases and 38 deaths, followed by KL/ Putrajaya (3,228 cases and five deaths), Sarawak (3,301 cases and 13 deaths), Johor (2,650 cases and eight deaths), Kelantan (2,010 and nine deaths), Sabah (1,589 cases and one death), Perak (1,568 cases and five deaths), Negri Sembilan (1,341 cases and seven deaths), and Pahang (1,018 cases and one death).

Penang reported 944 cases and three deaths, Malacca (742 cases and 10 deaths), Terengganu (670 cases), Kedah (552 cases and three deaths), Perlis (123 cases) and Labuan (16 cases).

Dengue claims one more victim

KUALA LUMPUR: A 65-year-old man from Kluang, Johor, who was admitted to the Kluang Hospital, became the latest victim to die of dengue during the period between Aug 29 to Sept 4.

The man who also had Hypertension, was admitted on Aug 29, but died five days later due to the Dengue Shock Syndrome.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said 1,144 cases were reported throughout the country last week which was a slight drop from the 1,159 reported the week before.

However, four states registered an increase in the number of cases when Kelantan recorded an increase of 50 cases, Johor (28), Penang (16) and Selangor (13).

The number of accumulated cases from January to Sept 4, stood at 33,832 cases which was an increase of 12 per cent or 3,722 cases when compared with 30,110 cases for the same period last year, he said in a statement here today.

Drop in Dengue Cases

KUALA LUMPUR, 15 SEPTEMBER, 2010: One death due to dengue involving an 11-year-old girl was reported for the period Sept 5 to 11, raising the overall total to 105 deaths this year.

The Director-General of Health Services, Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican, said dengue fever cases, however, were reported to have dropped by 21 per cent during the period to 898 cases compared with 1,144 cases reported in the previous week.

"Two states had reported an increase in the number of cases last week namely Terengganu (15 cases) and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (four cases)," he said in a statement, here today.

He said the total number of cases reported from January to September this year rose by 13 percent to 34,730 compared with 30,588 cases for the same period last year.

Ministry orders immediate action to eradicate Aedes mosquitoes at dump sites

KOTA BARU: The Health Ministry has ordered immediate action to eradicate Aedes mosquitoes at waste disposal sites nationwide.

Its minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said this was because the Aedes breeding index at waste disposal sites in the country showed a high increase of 8.5%, which exceeded the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard of less than 1%.

"This is because there are too many water containers like empty cans and plastic bags, which can serve as breeding places for mosquitoes," he told reporters after launching a community clean-up in Kampung Baru Penambang, here, Friday.

The minister said after Selangor, Kelantan recorded the second highest increase in dengue cases, with 2,531 as at the 36th week.

"This is an increase of 190% from last year's 1,658 cases," he said.

Liow said nine deaths due to dengue had been recorded in Kelantan so far this year, compared with only one last year.

Dengue fever death rate spirals

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia said on Monday its dengue fever death rate spiralled 53 percent this year, but backed away from a controversial trial of releasing genetically modified mosquitoes to wipe out the disease.

"There was a major rise in deaths due to dengue fever, with 107 deaths so far this year compared to 70 deaths for the same period last year," said deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin...

Pahang records second dengue death

KUANTAN: A 23-year-old trainee beautician died from dengue fever on Saturday, making her the second to die in Pahang.

Yap Woan Jen, of Jalan Haji Ahmad, succumbed to the illness at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here at 10.11am after she failed to regain consciousness.

The victim was first warded at a private hospital and then transferred to a government hospital when her condition worsened on Thurs*day.

State Local Government, Environ*ment and Health Committee chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun said a preliminary report revealed that Yap had died from dengue shock symptoms.

The first death was recorded in Keratong in Rompin earlier this year.

Dengue warning in Johor

MUAR: The Johor government had issued a warning on dengue fever and urged all residents to clean up their neighbourhood after a tenth victim died last week.

State Women, Family, Health and Community Development Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said the latest victim was a woman, aged 34, from Sarawak who lived in Kampung Melayu Majidee in Johor Baru.

She said the state Health Department was very concerned over the increasing deaths from dengue fever and wanted the public to keep their neighbourhood clean.

?We recorded only three deaths for the whole of last year but this year the number has reached 10 within 10 months.

?People should know that haemorrhagic dengue, can kill,? she said, at her hari Raya open house in Sungai Balang here.
