Some 119 people died from dengue fever from January to October this year

PETALING JAYA: A total of 119 people died from dengue fever in the first 10 months of this year, with the latest reported death on Oct 23.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said this was an increase of 45 deaths (or 61%) of the reported deaths within the same period last year...

...Dr Ismail said 40,959 cases of dengue fever cases were reported between January and October, an increase of 19% of cases in the corresponding period last year...

...Meanwhile, the number of Chikungunya cases had dropped significantly, down 80%, with 787 cases from January to October this year against 3,988 cases reported in the corresponding period last year.

Engineer Is Latest Dengue Casualty

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- An engineer from Selangor is the latest dengue casualty in the week beginning Nov 7, bringing the total number of deaths caused by dengue this year to 121...

...He said between January and Nov 13, this year, the accumulated number of cases rose by 19 per cent from 42,324 cases as compared to 35,695 cases for the same period last year...

...A total of 793 Chikugunya cases were recorded this year, so far, indicating an 82 per cent drop or decrease of 3,674 cases, as compared to 4,467 cases for the same period in 2009.

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 21, 2010): Doctors? failure to follow Health Ministry guidelines in detecting dengue is one reason for the high number of severe and deadly cases.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai is dismayed that some medical practitioners do not refer to the Management of Dengue Infection in Adults Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) when treating patients with symptoms of the disease.

?If doctors don?t know how to detect it early ,the death rate will go up,? he said after opening the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA)-Ministry of Health Infectious Diseases Conference 2010 today. Liow also announced two more deaths -- in Sandakan and Tawau -- today, bringing the year's toll to 125.

"It (the CPG) is on the MOH website at www.moh.gov.my. We ask all doctors to read the CPG. It is the responsibility of every doctor to upgrade their knowledge,? he said.

Liow said previously patients could die within a week.

?Now a patient can die after four days,? he said, adding that the guideline, launched last year, is in its second revision.

?Doctors have to follow clinical guidelines. Certain things may arise where they have to take extra care to treat dengue cases," said Liow, who did not discount action against doctors who did not follow the CPG.

"When people come and see you for a fever, you must exclude dengue before looking for other diseases,? said Liow, who spoke of patients doctor-hopping through several clinics until they were admitted to hospital for dengue.

Liow said there was an increase in the number of reported dengue cases since the CPG was introduced.

MMA president Dr David Quek, pointed out that the initial symptoms of dengue fever could be "very misleading".

"So the main problem is that sometimes the doctors are not totally aware, because it might be a flu or a cold.

?Sometimes when you see a GP with a fever, they tell you to get to a hospital if you don?t get better in one or two days (but) patients usually go to another doctor hoping to get better.

?So they go to a second and a third doctor, and when they do all the classic symptoms are there and they get referred. And it?s too late,? said Quek.

To a question on competence, he said there are only a handful of sub-standard physicians.

?We have reports that sometimes when they go to various hospitals and when the symptoms are not classic enough some of the hospitals refuse to admit them,? he said, adding that the MMA had directed its members to read the CPG, and for doctors to have a good "suspicion index" as the rate of cases was increasing.

Death toll from dengue rises to 128


GEORGE TOWN: Three people died from dengue this week raising the death toll to 128 since January.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said the deaths were recorded in Sarawak, Penang and Johor.

"It is an increase of 50 deaths compared to 78 over the corresponding period last year," she said after opening a life saving training course organised by Bukit Gelugor Puteri Umno and Murni Nursing Academy here on Sunday.

Rosnah said 43,477 dengue fever cases were reported up to Saturday, as compared to 37,205 cases over the corresponding period last year.

Dengue cases on the rise

TEMERLOH: Dengue fever deaths in the country has recorded an upward trend of some 30% for the past few years, said Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin.

In expressing her concern over the statistics, she said since January this year, there were 123 fatalities from dengue fever and other related symptoms.

?Up to now, some 42,749 dengue fever cases were recorded all over the country with 123 deaths.

?Last year, there were 36,294 cases with 77 deaths,? she said, after launching a community programme in Taman Saga Indah, Mentakab.

Also present were Lanchang assemblyman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin and Temerloh Puteri Umno division chief Norashikin Sulaiman.

Three Dengue Deaths Recorded Last Week

...The first case involved a 34-year-old man in Georgetown, the second a 22-year-old storekeeper in Johor and the third a 43-year-old woman in Sibu, who operated a stall at the farmers market in the town.

Dr Mohd Ismail said the number of dengue deaths recorded so far this year was 128...

...Meanwhile, the number of dengue cases reported from January till Nov 29 stood at 43,543 cases...

...As for Chikungunya...Accumulated cases for the year was 797 cases, an 84 per cent drop from the 4,904 cases reported over the same period last year.

Alarming increase in Malacca dengue cases

MALACCA: The number of dengue cases in Malacca increased alarmingly over the first 11 months of the year to 1,378 cases, compared with the 748 over the same period last year.

State Women's Affair, Family Development and Health Committee chairman Norpipah Abdol said 309 cases were confirmed as haemorrhagic dengue fever.

She said the number of dengue deaths increased to 12 compared to four over the same period last year.

Malaysia testing dengue vaccine as deaths surge

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysian health authorities have announced that they are testing a dengue vaccine in a bid to combat the disease which has seen death rate jumped more than 60 percent this year.

At present there is no treatment or vaccine for the mosquito-borne disease, which has killed 128 people this year in Malaysia alone, compared to 78 deaths during the same period a year ago. Malaysian health authorities said they started clinical trials involving some 300 volunteers in the middle of the year and would carry out further trials from December.

"If these studies are successful, we hope the vaccine can be made available to the Malaysian people in the next few years," health ministry director general Ismail Merican said in a statement...

DEWAN RAKYAT: El Nino Blamed For Rise In Dengue Fever

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 (Bernama) -- The El Nino phenomenon has contributed to the sharp increase in dengue fever cases this year, the Dewan Negara was told...

...Rosnah said dengue fever claimed 132 lives in the country so far this year compared to 83 in the corresponding period last year while dengue fever cases rose by 15 per cent to 44,641 cases.

However, she said the situation was not as bad as countries like Singapore which registered 3,817 cases, Laos (21,509), Thailand (70,902) and the Philippines (110,235) so far this year - an increase of between 15 and 90.6 per cent...

Dengue cases down in five states

PETALING JAYA: Five states reported a reduction in total dengue fever cases for 2010 compared with the figures in 2009 while 10 other states experienced a surge in the number of cases, according to the Health Ministry.

Cases in Penang fell by 25% from 2,444 in 2009 to 1,834 last year, while in Selangor the figure showed a decrease by 12% from 18,676 to 16,367 cases and Perak by 16% from 2,734 to 2,288 cases, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican in a statement.

Cases of dengue fever in Sarawak were down by 6% from 4,490 cases to 4,240 and Labuan Federal Territory reduced by 24% from 25 to 19 cases in the same duration, he said...

Dengue cases in Selangor up 11 per cent

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA: Selangor saw 46,171 dengue cases last year, an 11% increase from the 41,486 reported in 2009.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said, however, the final week of last year was encouraging, with 487 cases. This was 6% lower than the penultimate week when 519 cases were reported.

Ten states saw an increase in dengue cases last year, he said in a statement yesterday.

The states are Kelantan (2,547 cases), Johor (1,878) Sabah (921), Pahang (781), Malacca (716), Terengganu (504), Federal Territory/Putrajaya (459), Negri Sembilan (444), Kedah (32) and Perlis (24).

"Death involving dengue also increased to 134 cases in 2010 from 88 cases in 2009. Kelantan had the highest number of deaths in 2010 with 10 cases," Dr Ismail said...
