The city saw yet another death due to swine flu even as six new cases were reported over the past couple of days.
This is the third death in the city in the last two months with as many as 49 patients having been diagnosed with the dreaded disease. Significantly, the virus ? which used to infect people predominantly during winter ? is said to be turning unpredictable, spreading even in the humidity of summer.

MUMBAI: It's not only pregnant women and overweight people, but transplants patients too who are vulnerable to swine flu. Three transplant patients needed hospitalization in the last 10 days with the H1N1 infection, which has taken 25 lives and affected over 1,900 Mumbaikars this year. BMC's health report on Friday said 15 patients of H1N1 were identified in the last 24 hours, while 75 others needed hospitalization in July.

"Transplant patients are vulnerable to infection as they have to take immune-suppressant tablets to ensure that their body doesn't reject the transplanted kidney. But the immune-suppressants make them susceptible to infections, such as H1N1,'' nephrologist Dr Madan Bahadur, who consults in South Mumbai hospitals, said on Friday.

Mumbai: The H1N1 virus has claimed three lives in as many days. An 80-year-old Vikhroli resident admitted to civic-run Kasturba Hospital, near Saat Rasta, was the third person to succumb to it on Saturday afternoon.
On Thursday, two women in their 30s passed away due to H1N1 in different city hospitals, taking the death toll due to the virus to 26 so far this year.
A doctor from the hospital said the patient, who had been transferred from Godrej Hospital in Vikhroli, had heart disease as well as high blood pressure. Patients with co-morbidities such as diabetes or heart disease are more susceptible to complications due to H1N1, say surveys done by BMC's public health department in the previous years.

A 60-year-old man from Mumbai died of swine flu at a hospital here on Thursday, taking the total number of H1N1 casualties in Pune city to 90 this year, so far. Of the total victims, 36 were local residents while the rest had come to the city for treatment from adjoining areas.

"Besides testing positive for swine flu, the victim had other co-morbid conditions, including hypertension and ischemic heart disease. He developed septicemic shock with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with multi-organ failure. He died around 9.25am on Thursday," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

To prevent the spread of swine flu and the resultant casualties, the state government is planning to supply vaccines to private hospitals and medical practitioners at a cheaper rate to let them inoculate people at a regulated price.

"We are planning to vaccinate high-risk groups, namely, doctors and health workers, people with hypertension, HIV, diabetes, obesity or children with asthma, lung problems and compromised immunity, pregnant women and also the general population," a senior health department official told dna.


He added that while the Centre would supply the vaccine to be given to health workers, pregnant women would be inoculated by the state government free of cost. Those with high blood pressure and other diseases will be covered by the municipal corporations and zilla parishads, while the general population can get themselves vaccinated by the private sector to prevent deaths, the official said.

He added that at present, the focus is just on pregnant women in their second or third trimester ? the programme will be expanded to other high-risk groups according to the response received.

The committee has stated that since this is not a mass or universal vaccination, it should not be voluntary for people in target groups. NASHIK: The deadly swine flu has raised its ugly head again this year. The H1N1 infection has claimed 46 lives so far this year, a figure much higher than the deaths reported during the outbreak in 2010.

A 48-year-old woman from Sangamner died of swine flu at the Nashik Civil Hospital on Sunday. She was referred by a private practitioner in Sangamner after checking her symptoms. The woman, however, succumbed to the disease while undergoing treatment.

Kalyan woman succumbs to swine flu

A 30-year-old woman from Kalyan succumbed to swine flu at the civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel on Monday. The patient was admitted to the hospital on August 1. Her treatment had started with Tamiflu medication, but within four days of developing symptoms, she succumbed to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

"Since the patient who died did not reside in Mumbai, this death is not being put in the list of deaths that occurred this year in Mumbai," said a BMC health department official.
