Two deaths were reported in the city, which also saw 26 new cases

Mumbai : Just when medical experts thought that swine flu was on its way out, the city witnessed two more deaths and 26 new cases in past three days. City experts claim this is owing to unseasonal rains and fluctuating temperatures which have hit the City and the State. Following rain, hospitals have witnessed a 20 per cent rise in patients turning up with flu-like symptoms.

One of the deaths was that of a 5-month pregnant woman from Nashik. The 22-year-old woman was first getting treated on out-patient department basis (OPD) from Lotus Hospital in Nashik. But she was subsequently shifted to KEM Hospital in Parel on April 12 and was a known case of aplastic anemia. Owing to her damaged cells and bone marrow, her condition worsened and she breathed her last on Wednesday due to type 1 respiratory failure in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The civic officials informed that she suffered from a miscarriage due to intra-uterine fetal death.

Another death was of a 26-year-old man from Ghatkopar. He was admitted to KEM Hospital on April 5; however he was not associated with any co-morbidities.

Swine flu toll mounts to 155 in Nagpur circle

Nagpur: Swine flu death toll in the Nagpur circle of state's public health department has now touched 115. Two women who were undergoing treatment for the disease at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) had passed away on Saturday. They were found to have been swine flu positive after their deaths.

Thirty-six-year-old Varsha Devgade from Chandrapur and 35-year-old resident of Mahal Urvashi Pundalik had both passed away at GMCH on Saturday.

Four more persons succumb to swine flu

NASHIK: Four persons, including a four-year-old child, have died of swine flu this week, taking the number of H1N1 casualty to 35 in the district this year. Health officials attributed the recent swine flu cases to the unseasonal rain and hailstorms.

An official said Bebitai Suryabhan Ranade (44), a resident of Devpur in Sinnar taluka, tested positive on April 11 and died the following morning. Four-year-old Dinkar Shridhar Shevale from Lohner in the Deola taluka succumbed to the contagion on Sunday afternoon. Medical reports revealed that Dinkar was a diabetic and in all likelihood his immunity was low.

The two persons who died in the civic limits were identified as Ruksana Altaf Pinjari (32) and Dilip Chimaji Borade (50). Pinjari was a resident of the Adgaon area and died on Monday. But that she succumbed to swine flu was confirmed by the medical reports obtained the following day.

2 more die of swine flu in Pune

PUNE: Two persons succumbed to swine flu in the city between Sunday and Monday, taking the death count in Pune to 84 this year, so far. The condition of six patients has been reported critical and they have been put on ventilator.

Swine flu claims 4 more lives in state

PUNE: The state health officials on Thursday confirmed 10 fresh cases and four deaths due to swine flu on Thursday. With this, the total number of cases has gone up to 5,140 while the number of casualties has increased to 499 this year, so far.

Currently, the condition of eight patients is critical and they have been put on ventilator. "Mumbai reported highest four positive cases of swine flu followed by Thane (3) and Nashik (3). This indicates that the contagion has not died down though the number of cases and casualties has significantly dropped," said a state health official. Four patients succumbed to the contagion while undergoing treatment at hospitals in Thane and Nashik. Of the four victims, two had associated medical conditions, including diabetes and bronchitis, the official added.

Swine flu toll in Nashik highest in last five years

NASHIK: Just when the number of swine flu cases was declining with the rise in the temperature in the district, two more deaths from H1N1 virus infection reported on April 26 and 28 from Nashik city has brought the toll to 39 ? highest so far in the last five years. The toll is in fact equivalent to the total number of deaths registered in 2010. The health officials fear the winter season from October to December is likely to add more to the tally.

Swine flu claimed 120 victims in this season

NAGPUR: Since January 1, 120 lives have been lost throughout Nagpur circle of the state's public health department to swine flu. The current wave has finally ebbed, as there have been no new patients in more than a month. With mercury rising, it is safe to say that there's no need to be scared of H1N1 virus, at least for the next few months.

It was an unusual season of the disease, with several relatively healthy and young people falling prey to the disease. Of the 594 people who tested positive for the disease, 120 have died as per the records of Deputy Directorate of Health Services (DDHS). This makes the death rate of swine flu over the last four months to be a little over 20%. TOI looks back at the issues that troubled doctors as panic and fear mongering took its toll of the masses.

[h=1]H1N1 kills 25-year-old from Thane[/h]
MUMBAI: After a lull of nearly a month, the H1N1 virus claimed a 25-year-old woman from Thane, making it the 43rd death to be reported in a city hospital. She died at the BMC-run Kasturba Hospital, where she was diagnosed with the infection and was undergoing treatment for the past couple of days.

Executive health officer Dr Padmaja Keskar confirmed the death.

She said that the patient was being treated at a private hospital in Thane. "The patient was shifted to Kasturba Hospital after her condition did not improve. She passed away late on Monday evening after developing severe breathing difficulty," she added.

The death however will not be added to the city's death toll as the deceased was a resident of Thane.

Ahmednagar woman dies of swine flu

PUNE: A 45-year-old woman from Ahmednagar district succumbed to swine flu at a private hospital in the city, pushing the number of swine flu deaths to 87 since the beginning of this year.

The woman, who hailed from Shahapur village, had developed influenza-like symptoms from May 6. She had cough, fever and later complained of breathlessness. Despite the symptoms, she did not seek medical care for the first two days.

Another swine flu death reported at GMCH

Nagpur: A 45-year-old woman from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh died on Wednesday evening at 8.30pm due to swine flu at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

The death of Anita Doifode on May 13 at GMCH has taken the total death toll due to H1N1 in the medical college to 58. The GMCH's preventive medicine department, which maintains the record of positive and dead patients, however reported the death late on Thursday night. Before her, the last death had occurred on last Monday, of a lady from Yavatmal.

As of 5/13; 517 confirmed fatalities, the most recent from Mumbai. 13 patients are still hospitalized with none on ventilators. 10 new patients were admitted state wide on 5/13.

Mumbai : Kasturba Hospital?s swine flu isolation ward was once again reopened on May 4 after a 28-year-old woman from Nalasopara and a 48-year-old woman from Matunga Road tested positive for swine flu. However, they both got discharged and currently, the hospital is treating two swine flu patients. In wake of the two swine flu deaths being reported in the last four days, BMC?s health department has announced a death investigation committee meeting to be held in the next week.

Two more succumb to swine flu

PUNE: Two more persons, one from Satara district and another from Ahmednagar district, died of swine flu at different hospitals in the city on Tuesday, taking Pune's swine flu casualties to 89 this year, so far.


A forty-five-year-old man from Chinchondi Patil village in Ahemadnagar district developed influenza-like symptoms on May 4. He had high-grade fever, cough with expectoration, bodyache and breathlessness. Initially, he sought medical care at a private hospital in Ahmednagar where he was administered symptomatic treatment. Meanwhile, the man was also diagnosed with uncontrolled diabetes.

A fifty-year-old man from Shirval in Satara district developed influenza-like illness from May 1. He sought medical care initially from a neighbourhood physician, however, when his condition didn't improve, he was shifted to a private hospital in Shirval on May 3 where he tested positive for swine flu here.
