Spurt in H1N1 cases in Pune

As one more H1N1 death was reported in the city, the spurt in positive cases this monsoon and deaths, especially of those patients who were referred late for treatment, has made medical experts sound a note of alarm. H1N1 has claimed 36 lives in the state so far with nine deaths reported from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits itself.

On Sunday, a 57-year-old man, who was admitted to Sahyadri Munot Hospital, died of septicemia with renal failure. The Gultekdi resident had tested positive for H1N1 the same day and his death took city count of H1N1 deaths to 9 since April.

2 more affected due to swine flu in Mumbai

Two cases of swine flu were reported in the metropolis today afternoon, taking the number of H1N1 cases in the city to 64 in August and 277 since January.

According to the sources in the health department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), one of the victims is a five-year-old girl from Powai in north-west Mumbai.

While, the other is a 25-year-old woman from Goregaon in north Mumbai who was admitted to a private hospital.

Both the patients are being treated with Tamiflu and are stable, the sources added. (UNI)

Swine flu back in city, virus kills one

NASHIK: Mandana Chatona, 42, a resident of Sawarkar Nagar, Satpur, died due to swine flu on Saturday.

Chatona is the first H1N1 victim in the city this season. She had been who was admitted to the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospital for cold and fever but was moved to a special cell at Civil Hospital after her condition worsened.

Swine flu has once again returned to haunt Satara district as it claimed two lives in the last four days. While a 27-year old woman from Patan tehsil died of swine flu on Thursday, a 2.5-year-old girl from Koregaon tehsil is suspected to have died of the disease on Friday.

Chandivli woman tests positive for H1N1

MUMBAI: A 33-year-old woman from Chandivli tested positive for the H1N1 influenza virus on Monday, taking the toll of positive cases to 71 for August. So far, 284 cases of H1N1 have been reported in 2012 and there were two confirmed deaths. The patient was started with Tamiflu.

Eight test positive for H1N1, 1 critical

PUNE: Eight people tested positive for swine flu in the city on Wednesday. One from among them - a 25-year-old man from Sadashiv Peth - is critically ill.

Since the beginning of this month, the H1N1 virus has claimed 10 lives in different parts of the state and infected over 140 people, officials said.

"The condition of the 25-year-old man is critical. He has been put on ventilator support. The remaining seven people who tested positive are stable," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Six new H1N1 cases

Six months after the H1N1 virus made comeback in the city, the total number of positive cases reported shot beyond 300 on Friday when six new cases were detected taking the toll to 305 this year.

The virus has already claimed the lives of a 19-year-old from Chembur and a 44-year-old from Navi Mumbai. While July saw 151 H1N1 cases being reported, 92 cases were reported in August, with about a week more for the month to end. As per the civic body records, maximum cases have been reported from Vikhroli, Powai, Bandra and Andheri. Interestingly, more than 95 per cent of the 300 odd cases have been reported from non-slum regions.

Doctors have observed a transition in nature of the virus this year as compared to the deadly strain in the 2009. The H1N1 flu this time around became more of a seasonal flu.

Since April, in Pune, 14,631 persons have been given Tamiflu while for Pimpri-Chinchwad the figure is 9,314.

With two more H1N1 deaths on Monday, the swine flu death toll climbed to 19 in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad since March this year. Diabetic Sandip Jadhav (38), a resident of Bhosari, died of swine flu at Niramaya Hospital in Chinchwad on Monday and Jayant Pathak (64), a resident of Dhankawadi, who suffered from diabetes and ischemic heart disease, also succumbed to the virus at Rao Nursing Home.

25-year-old died of cross-infection, diagnosed with swine flu and dengue

With one more H1N1 death on Tuesday, the city?s swine flu toll since April this year has reached 11. Mandar Patil (25) died of a cross-infection on Tuesday as he had swine flu and dengue. Pune Municipal Corporation acting medical chief Dr S T Pardeshi said the death due to cross-infection was incidental and there were fewer dengue cases this year as compared to last year.

Govt hospitals run short of syrup to cure swine flu

PUNE: Fluvir syrup, used for treating swine flu infection in children below 12 years of age, is not available in the state government's supply chain. The shortage is causing hardships to people, especially from poor families.

"The syrup, which is essential for treating swine flu infection in children, is not available at civic-run and state government hospitals in Pune and Mumbai," said corporator Siddharth Dhende. He is also a doctor.

A two-year-old baby with swine flu could not get the syrup in Mumbai following which she was rushed to Pune for treatment on Wednesday.

H1N1 kills Panvel road contractor; Maharashtra toll touches 61

The increasing scourge of swine flu in Maharashtra has claimed yet another life.

A 52-year-old road contractor from Panvel, RV Deshmukh, passed away on Saturday at Bombay Hospital due to septicaemia and multi-organ failure caused by the H1N1 virus.

Deshmukh was admitted to the hospital on August 19 with what was presumed to be pneumonia.

According to Dr Kapil Salgia, chest physician at the hospital, he was first admitted to a hospital close to his residence with symptoms of cough, fever and breathlessness after which, he was shifted to Bombay Hospital.

?The patient was already on Tamiflu (the prescribed drug to treat H1N1) because, even though the swine flu diagnosis was not made, doctors at the previous hospital suspected he might have contracted the virus,? Dr Salgia said.

Despite being on the treatment for H1N1, Deshmukh?s condition deteriorated rapidly. He was not maintaining sufficient oxygen levels and hence, the doctors incubated him and put him on a ventilator.

Deshmukh was kept on dialysis for seven to eight days due to his renal failure and was also treated with multiple antibiotics.

Six more test positive for swine flu

PUNE: Six more people tested positive for H1N1 influenza on Wednesday. Among them, the condition of an 18-year-old boy from Bhugaon village is critical. He has been put on ventilator support.

"The youth has been admitted to Krishna Hospital and he has been put on ventilator support," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). "The condition of five others is stable," he added.

The other patients are a 45-year-old man from Narayangaon, a 58-year-old man from Balajinagar, a 43-year-old woman from Padmavati, a 30-year-old woman from Lohagaon and a 28-year-old woman from Parvati.

The condition of a 29-year-old man who has been critically ill with swine flu for last few days remains the same, officials said.
