Latest swine flu victim a 25-year-old pregnant woman

The death of a 25-year-old pregnant woman from Junnar tehsil in Pune district due to swine flu has led the health authorities to caution the rural hospitals to step up treatment specially of patients suffering from fever, cold and cough.

The 25-year-old woman who was in the 39th week of pregnancy developed symptoms from October 2 and complained of breathlessness on October 6.

She did not avail of medication till October 4 after which she was taken to Ghadge Hospital at Ambegaon tehsil. While supportive IV fluids were administered, the woman was referred to KEM hospital in Pune for higher management. She was admitted to KEM Hospital where doctors immediately administered Tamiflu tablet. A C-section was done on October 7 and she delivered a baby girl. However, the newborn died immediately after delivery.

The woman also did not respond to treatment. Her throat swab was taken October 8 and sent to the National Institute of Virology.

The swab tested positive for H1N1 virus on October 9, but by then her condition was critical and she died today at 4.15 p.m due to swine flu related symptoms such as pneumonia with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Pregnant woman dies of swine flu, toll touches 10 in Chinchwad

A 30-year-old pregnant woman from Chinchwad died of H1N1 virus last week. With this, the swine flu death toll in Pimpri-Chinchwad has reached 10.

Dr Milind Jawale, medical officer, national programmes, said the woman was in the 33rd week of pregnancy and had symptoms like fever, cough and sore throat since October 15. She was undergoing treatment at Ankur Hospital in Chinchwad following which she was referred to Niramay Hospital where the throat swab was taken for tests on October 19. The woman died on the same day.

42-year-old critical with swine flu

PUNE: The condition of one more person with swine flu is critical. He has been put on ventilator support, said health officials from Pune Municipal Corporation on Friday.

A resident of Navi Peth in Pune, the 42-year-old man developed fever, cough and cold from October 10 and high grade fever and breathlessness from October 15.

He didn't seek medical advice for first five days of developing symptoms. On October 16, he consulted doctors at a hospital on Satara road. However, he didn t get any relief from the medicines given to him and hence he was referred to Poona Hospital and Research Centre for higher management, said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health, PMC.

PMC officials allege delay in treatment

Two more persons succumbed to swine flu (H1N1 virus) on Dussehra, this time due to delay in treatment, say Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health officials.

The 23-year-old had symptoms like fever, cold and cough since September 27 and was referred to KEM hospital for specialised treatment.

From September 30 to October 24, the he battled the virus, but succumbed to the virus on Wednesday. Doctors pointed out that there had been a delay in treatment by two days.

Meanwhile, the 49-year-old who had received a donor kidney in 2006, was on immuno-suppressant drugs and had asthma. He too died of the viral infection today. He had fever, cough and running nose since September 22.

Delayed treatment for swine flu can lead to death, says study

PUNE: An analysis of the swine flu deaths in the city this year shows that, besides associated illnesses, delayed treatment is also a prominent cause of the casualties.

At least 25 people have died of swine flu in the city since April this year. Among them, 12 had underlying medical conditions. In seven cases, there was a delay in seeking medical advice which led to fast deterioration in the condition of the patients, the report says.

"Among those who died of swine flu this year, a considerable number had not taken treatment in time. This led to worsening of their condition," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health (MoH), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Theur man succumbs to swine flu

PUNE: A 44-year-old man from Theur (Haveli taluka) died of H1N1 influenza on Thursday.

Since April, there have been 26 H1N1 deaths in the city, 11 of them this month alone.

H1N1 death amid dengue control

Even as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health authorities identified 344 mosquito breeding sites on Thursday as part of its wardwise container survey, another swine flu (H1N1 virus) death reported from the city has the civic body stepping up surveillance measures.

A 42-year-old man from Navi Peth died due to H1N1 virus on October 31, Dr S T Pardeshi, acting chief medical officer, PMC said. Pardeshi said the victim did not avail immediately treatment when he had symptoms from October 10. However, when he suffered from breathlessness he was admitted to a local hospital after which he was shifted to Ruby Hall Clinic. His throat swab tested positive for swine flu on October 18. He succumbed to the viral infection and died of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

In PMC area, 25-yr-old woman succumbs to H1N1 virus, 52-yr-old man dies of dengue

On Friday, civic health authorities reported two more deaths, a 52-year-old man who died of dengue and another of a 25-year-old woman who died of swine flu. While the death toll due to dengue touched six in the city, swine flu has claimed 28 lives since April this year. Doctors have urged citizens to take preventive measures and seek medical treatment immediately.

The 25-year-old woman who suffered from Type 1 diabetes (mellitus) since childhood had battled with H1N1 virus for nearly a month before succumbing to renal failure and other complications.

Doctors at Bharati hospital got her off ventilator support after which she turned critical and went into septic shock and died of renal failure. She died on Thursday, but the PMC reported the death on Friday.

Dr S T Pardeshi, acting chief medical officer of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said the 25-year-old woman hailed from Askawadi in Purandar tehsil and had developed flu-like symptoms when she was staying with her relatives at Bibwewadi. Her throat swab had tested positive for H1N1 virus on October 4.

H1N1, dengue: Pune hospitals face shortage of ICU beds


Hospital administrators across the city are facing a distressing situation. The spurt in dengue and H1N1 has stretched the existing resources to the breaking point, with the intensive care unit (ICU) beds nearly occupied in most city hospitals.

At Hadapsar?s Noble Hospital, Dr Mangesh Lingayat said that the general ICU beds as well as the H1N1 isolation ICU beds are 100% occupied.

?The situation is such that if any H1N1 patient, requiring ICU, comes here, we will have to refer him/her to other hospitals. Even in general ICU, beds are currently 100% occupied ever since the dengue and H1N1 epidemic began,? said Lingayat.

He added that of 10 confirmed dengue patients, five are admitted to ICU; while of four H1N1 cases, two are in ICU. ?Though, not every case requires ICU, but we are getting referrals from outside city limits too about serious patients,? added Lingayat.

At Ruby Hall Clinic, medical director Dr Sujata Mallik confirmed that the situation was no different with ICU beds 100% occupied.

?On an average, our ICU beds are always 90% occupied as there is always a high demand. But now that the dengue and H1N1 cases have increased so much, there is fear both in patients families and referring hospitals who want to shift patients in the ICU,? she said.

65-year-old dies of H1N1 in Pune

A 65-year-old man from Bhawani Peth died of swine flu at Adventist Hospital on Sunday. He was suffering from pneumonia and was admitted on November 1. His throat swab tested positive and he succumbed to the virus on Sunday.

Dr ST Pardeshi, acting chief medical officer, PMC, said this is the 29th death since April, adding that measure have been taken to check the spread of dengue. There have been 559 cases of dengue this year, with nearly 270 cases in October and November.

60-year-old dies of H1N1

PUNE: A 60-year-old woman died of swine flu on Monday, taking the toll in the city to 30 since April this year. Meanwhile, no fresh cases were reported on Monday. The woman, a resident of Dhankawadi, developed symptoms such as cough and sore throat around October 21. On October 25, she complained of breathlessness and fever. Despite such prominent symptoms, she did not seek treatment for the first five days. It was only after her condition worsened on October 25 that she consulted a doctor at a private hospital.

She was detected with bilateral pneumonia. Besides she was a diabetic. tnnThe doctor referred her to Bharati Hospital where she was admitted on October 27. Her condition deteriorated following which she was put on ventilator support on November 2. She died at 3.45 pm on Monday.

It was the lull before the storm. After a significant drop last fiscal, the number of deaths from swine flu has shot up by about 800% in the state this year. A total of 113 deaths were registered till November 7 this year compared with the 12 in 2011-12.

Ten people within the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation?s (BMC) limits have died since April this year. The Pune Municipal Corporation tops the shame list with 30 swine flu deaths. Close on BMC?s heels is the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, which has registered nine deaths so far this year. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has seen four deaths.

H1N1 bigger killer in state than dengue & malaria

MUMBAI: The H1N1 influenza virus killed more people in the state than malaria and dengue put together this year. In the city, the virus showed a 60-fold jump in terms of the number of people it affected as compared to last year, but only five cases resulted in deaths. Experts caution that the virus is capable of throwing up surprises as the winter sets in.

Initially termed swine flu, the virus that caused the 2009 pandemic made a surprising comeback, affecting 1,234 people officially. It also claimed 122 lives in the last 10 months- double the number of lives claimed by malaria this year. State records show that malaria and dengue have killed 60 and 59 people respectively so far.

48-year-old succumbs to H1N1; toll 31 since April

PUNE: A 48-year-old woman from Purandar taluka succumbed to swine flu infection on Thursday. With this, the city's H1N1 death toll since April has gone up to 31. Two more persons with swine flu symptoms are current on ventilator support and are said to be critical.

The woman, a resident of Veer village, developed symptoms like cough from October 23 and fever from October 26. Her condition worsened and she developed breathlessness from October 28. This increased progressively, following which she developed respiratory failure. She had no other associated illness.

My suspicion is that the state toll is a little higher than we have tracked here. Unfortunately, the Maharashtra Ministry of Health has not updated its surveillance pages since October 27th. - Ro

Woman dies of H1N1 after delivery

A 28-year-old woman of Shivneri Nagar, Kondhwa Khurd, died of swine flu (H1N1 virus) on Monday after she delivered a baby. This is the 33rd H1N1 death since April.

Dr S T Pardeshi, acting chief medical officer, Pune Municipal Corporation, said the woman had symptoms such as dry cough and mild fever since October 31 and went into labour at Kaya Clinic and Nursing Home on November 2. She gave birth to a girl.

However, the woman?s condition worsened. She was referred to Bharati Hospital and admitted to the ICU.

26th swine flu victim is 44-year-old from Theur


A 44-year-old from Theur in Haveli tehsil of Pune district succumbed to swine flu at Noble Hospital late on Thursday night, making it the 26th H1N1 death due to the virus in Pune this year.

PMC officials said the death was due to delay in initiating treatment.

At present, there are 14 patients admitted to various wards in the hospitals and one is on ventilator support.

Out of 1.5 lakh persons who have been screened for the virus since April this year, 28,473 have been administered Tamiflu and 422 patients was admitted to various hospitals have been treated and discharged, PMC health officials said.

They pointed out that of the 26 deaths, the majority was from outside Pune. Heath officials from Pimpri Chinchwad have also reported 10 deaths since April this year.

Pashan woman 34th H1N1 victim in PMC limits


A 35-year-old woman from Sus Road, Pashan, is the 34th swine flu victim since April this year within Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) jurisdiction.

She died at Poona Hospital on November 28 but her throat swab tested positive for swine flu on November 30, PMC health officials said. She had symptoms like fever, cough and sore throat since November 23 and she developed the problem of breathlessness from November 27. According to officials, her condition worsened as instead of availing treatment, she went to Jaipur from where she returned on November 27. She was admitted to Poona Hospital on November 28. At present, four swine flu patients are admitted to various hospitals in Pune, while one is on ventilator, the official said.
