H1N1-positive man critical

PUNE: A 55-year-old swine flu patient became critically ill and was put on ventilator support at a private hospital here on Monday.

"The man from Ganeshnagar in Phursungi was put on ventilator support at the KEM hospital on Monday. He had tested positive for the H1N1 virus on July 7," said medical officer of health S T Pardeshi of the Pune Municipal Corporation.

The man developed symptoms from July 2. "He initially had fever and cough. His condition soon worsened and he started to complain of breathlessness on July 4, when he was admitted to the hospital. He is HIV positive and also has a kidney problem," Pardeshi said.

27-year-old National Institute of Virology employee catches H1N1 influenza

PUNE: A 27-year-old employee of the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pashan, tested positive for swine flu on Tuesday. He is the sixth person to test positive for H1N1 influenza in city since the beginning of this month.

"The man works at NIV's Pashan campus. His condition is stable and he is recovering," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health (MoH), Pune Municipal Corporation.

He developed symptoms on July 6, following which he consulted NIV's in-house doctor. His throat swab tested positive for swine flu on July 10.

2 more test positive for swine flu

PUNE: A 29-year-old man from Pashan and a four-month-old child from Pimpri tested H1N1 positive on Tuesday. Seven persons have been infected with H1N1 in Pune and Pimpri in July. The patients are stable and under treatment, civic health officials said. Since April this year, 311 swine flu cases and 17 deaths were reported in the state. Health officials said sporadic cases would continue and people should take precautionary measures.

First swine flu death in city this month

Swine flu (H1N1 virus) claimed its first victim in the city this month. Harish Chandra Lonkar, 55, from Phursungi was admitted to KEM hospital on July 5. He tested positive for swine flu and died late on Tuesday night.

Health officials at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said he was brought in with swine flu like symptoms. His condition worsened due to morbid conditions like renal injury. He was immuno-compromised and admitted to KEM hospital?s ICU, D r S T Pardeshi, acting chief medical officer of health said.

Meanwhile, the death of a 50-year-old woman from Bhor taluka was also reported by the PMC health authorities as a suspected case of swine flu. ?The swab has been sent to NIV for testing. The report is awaited,? Pardeshi said. She was admitted to Bharati hospital on June 10 with pneumonia and septic shock.

Seven test positive for H1N1, count up to 95 this year

SEVEN MORE PEOPLE, including three minors tested positive for H1N1 influenza in Mumbay on Friday, taking the total count to 95 this year.

The patients - a 32-year-old woman from Vile Parle, a 29-year-old woman from Bandra, a 37-year-old man from Kurla, a 26-year-old man from Bandra, a 12-year-old girl from Malad, a 10-year-old girl from Grant Road and a one-yearold boy from Bandra - are all stable.

BMC?s chief epidemiologist Dr Mangala Gomare said that only the 12-year-old girl has been admitted to a private hospital while the rest of the patients are being treated on OPD basis.?All the patients have been put on a course of Oseltamivir and are doing well,? said Gomare.

More than 100 swine flu cases in city this year

The city is seeing a surge in H1N1 cases, with more than 100 positive swine flu cases reported since January. In contrast, only two cases of swine flu were detected in the city last year.

On Sunday, six in the city, including a one-year-old boy from Jogeshwari and a 70-year old man from Khar were diagnosed with swine flu. This brings the total number of cases in the city to 107 since January.

Another woman tests positive for H1N1

A 20-year-old woman from Santacruz tested positive for H1N1 influenza on Monday, taking the total count of patients to 108 this year.

?The woman has been admitted to KEM Hospital and is stable,? said Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC?s epidemiologist, adding that she had been put on a course of Oseltamivir.

However, the steady rise in swine flu cases in the city has left health authorities worried.

The count has already crossed 100 this year; during the same period last year only six positive cases were reported.

Last week, two new cases of swine flu were confirmed by BMC?s health officials: a 24-year old man from Powai and a 47-year-old resident of Kurla.

One more tests positive for H1N1

PUNE: A 46-year-old woman from Hadapsar, who has been in the isolation intensive care unit at Noble Hospital since July 16, tested positive for swine flu on Thursday.

"The patient's throat swab was sent to the National Institute of Virology, which confirmed she has swine flu. The patient has been put on non-invasive ventilator support," said PMC medical officer of health S T Pardeshi.

The woman developed symptoms around July 12. "Her husband, who is a doctor, treated her between July 12 and July 15 for fever and chills. She developed breathlessness following which she was moved to the Noble Hospital on July 16," Pardeshi said.

Swine flu cases in city up to 108

A 20-year old woman from Santacruz tested positive for swine flu on Monday, bringing the number of H1N1 cases to 108 this year. ?The woman is admitted to KEM Hospital and is stable,? said Dr Mangala Gomare, epidemiologist, BMC.

The city recorded nearly as many cases of swine flu
in the past two weeks as it did in the first six months of the year, according to BMC figures. Till June 30, the city recorded 58 cases. From July 1 to July 15, 49 cases were recorded.

Doctors say the drop in temperature and increased humidity could have led to the spurt. ?The virus spreads faster in such conditions,? said Dr Abhay Chaudhary, director, Haffkine Institute, Parel, that conducts tests for swine flu.

H1N1 claims 2nd life in 15 days in Mumbai

MUMBAI: A 56-year-old Ambivli man died of H1N1 on Thursday , making it the second death due to the virus in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in a fortnight . The death of Satish Sutar, who is suspected to have been infected during a recent visit to Pune, has increased the state's toll to 29 in three months, the highest in the country so far.

Sutar had been down with cold since July 1 but ignored it. Only when his condition worsened did he approach doctors. In fact, he was not diagnosed or treated for swine flu till a day before his death. P 4

4 cases of H1N1 in Powai

The count of positive cases for H1N1 influenza in the city jumped to 119 on Wednesday after eight people, including two children, tested positive.

An eight-year-old girl from Chandivali were the latest to test positive, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's epidemiologist Dr Mangala Gomare said., "Among adults, a 28-year-old female from Powai, a 35-year-old woman from Malad and another 73-year-old woman from Goregaon had to be admitted. All are stable."

A 58-year-old man from Powai, a 24-year-old woman from Powai and another 64-year-old woman from Ghatkopar tested positive and were treated on an OPD basis.

40-yr-old woman critical with H1N1

PUNE: A 40-year-old woman from Nigdi, who has been on ventilator support since Sunday, tested positive for H1N1 influenza on Monday.

"The woman's condition is critical and she is still on ventilator support," said a medical officer of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). "She has other co-morbid conditions like hypothyroidism and hypertension and is obese," he said.

The woman, a resident of Yamunanagar in Nigdi, developed symptoms on July 13. Later, her condition deteriorated and she developed breathlessness, following which she was admitted to Lokmanya Hospital in Nigdi on July 19.

"Her condition further worsened and she was put on ventilator support on Sunday. Her throat swab, sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), tested positive for swine flu on Monday," the officer said.

This is the second positive swine flu case within Pimpri-Chinchwad limits this month. A few days ago, a four-month-old baby had tested positive but recovered after a few days.

Since April, Pimpri-Chinchwad has reported 39 positive case and six deaths.

Mumbai registers 110 swine flu cases in July


A total of 110 cases of swine flu were reported in Mumbai this month, with Bandra, Santa Cruz, Andheri, Vile Parle and Bhandup having the highest number of victims.
Although swine flu has not claimed any life so far this year, the sudden spurt in the H1N1 cases has sent civic officials in a tizzy. According to civic officials, 172 cases, including 101 male and 71 female patients, have been reported this year.
However, civic officials are puzzled over the peculiar pattern in the spread of the disease. According to officials, the H1N1 virus has been found more in posh and middle-class localities. Out of 172 cases, as many as 166 cases, which amounts to more than 95 per cent, are found in non-slum areas. Bhandup has recorded the maximum 22 cases, followed by Bandra-Santa Cruz (17) and Andheri-Vile Parle (13) in July. Since January, these areas have recorded 28, 15 and 29 cases respectively.
?We are analysing the situation to find out why these areas are registering more number of H1N1 cases,? said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar, adding, ?People from this areas might have voluntarily come forward to check themselves.?
The BMC has directed all laboratories and hospitals, both private and public, to submit daily reports of suspected swine flu samples.
